I noticed some people went for the 8GB RAM upgrade. Isn't this a very expensive way of adding RAM? Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the base RAM and add your own later?

I thought this too, and I imagine it still remains the case in general. However, I ordered my new i7 15" on student discount. When I initially ordered, I got it with 4GB intending to upgrade from OWC, but it was actually more expensive at OWC than the student price for BTO 8GB ($375 vs. $360). So I canceled the order and reordered with the 8GB. Of course, I could have traded in the old 2x2GB to OWC and received $55, but I would have only saved $40. I figured it was worth $40 not to have to deal with all that.

All that said, if you are buying without a student or other discount, you'll save about $80. IMO, that is just enough to go through the hassle* of a 3rd party.

*I know it is exceptionally easy: I've done it on all my other boxes.

*Hand up* bought the 17" core i7 500GB 7200 drive.

I ordered first thing yesterday morning and still have yet to receive my "order confirmation" - strange.

You might want to check up on that. My confirmation came through after about 10 mins. Got to wait till 28th though....

13" should be a few days away from me as of yesterday.
The i5 was tempting, but the price hike on the entry-level 15" was just too much to warrant the extra money.
Very happy with my purchase!

Really rather excited now, shame about the wait but after how long I've been waiting for the update it's all gravy.

picked up 15 last night.. then as i was walking back to car.. realized i paid 650 more for a heavier bulkier laptop that i didn't originally want just because of the i5..

went back and got the 13 2.4ghz for 680 less after tax.. 1099 :D.. 13 is my limit in size for a mbp and i'm glad i exchanged before i opened it haha

apple almost got me with their up sale scheme .. phew..

anyone going to the store to buy the low res 15 must be crazy.. the increase in size must justify the increase in resolution.. a low res 15 is too big to have such low res

My first mac and currently at this moment being used ( at least until I get the new one in the mail ) is a mac mini with an 80gb hdd 1gb ram and 1.83ghz C2D anyway I am a photographer and that just does not work well when trying to run aperture and photoshop at the same time lol.

Purchased 15" 2.66ghz i7 hi res display,7200rpm 500gb hdd, 8gbs ram, and a nice 24" cinema display to go with it! :) this will be my first laptop and also my first computer I ever paid more then $800 for. Can't wait to get it in the mail its like torture waiting lol.

I am assuming I will be able to run Aperture 3 and Photoshop much faster now right? lol

I would just get it now, then you wont forget. Its totally worth having, I had some things fixed on my 08 MBP and the cost of the repairs would have far exceeded the price of the applecare

Ordered a 15inch i7 with high res anti-glare and 500GB 7200rpm to replace my faithful 12 inch Powerbook G4

I'm new to mac as well. Yesterday I ordered my 13" mbp and I got apple care because I didn't want to worry about it later on. you can wait until the first year is up then get it if funds is a problem

hi, is the macbook pro 2.4 Ghz with i5 a good choice ?! and do you prefer a 13" or a 15" ? and i'm am gonna study computer science next year, which one is better 15" or 13" (as a screen size and processor)?! plus is their a significant difference between the high-end 13" and the low-end 15" ?

I ordered my 15" MBP w/ i5 2.56, 8GB ram, High res antiglare monitor and the big SSD and they said it would be coming from overseas and probably would not be here until middle of next week, due to custom config.

Is it possible to order custom made macbook pro elsewhere other than the apple.com? Macmall always has a much cheaper price without tax.
