not enough research.

After watching the "Waiting for Haswell rMBP" thread for a few weeks, I decided to pull the trigger on a refurbished early-2013 2.7/16/512 rMBP!

After researching everything, it doesn't seem like the Haswell/iGPU are going to provide much of a difference over the current generation. Plus, I saved $420!

Can't wait to get it this week!

If that's the analysis, not enough research was done. The MBA Haswells provide quite a bit of additional feature and performance, not the least of which is a 25% increase (or more) to battery life...some of that comes from better CPU/GPU management, some could be just overall more efficient processor usage.

While the 40% increase in integrated GPU only applies to the integrated chips (and not the dedicated ones usually on the 15" pro models) SOME form of additional improvement should be expected when the pro's are announced. But, the battery life is IMHO a major advantage.

Is it 400$ worth, only the user can decide.

Ordered a new cMBP 15.4" for $1600, first Apple product...

Very excited, should be delivered tomorrow, I plan on eventually upgrading to a 500GB SSD and 16GB of RAM, I may even one day venture to do that Blu-Ray upgrade...

Ordered a maxed-out 15" rMBP. I'm currently connecting it to two 24" external monitors. Software development has become a heavenly experience.

Logic would dictate that the battery bump for the MBP will not be as strong as what we saw with the MBA when you factor in that the MBP will have to power the retina screen and a quad core processor. I think there will be an increase in battery capacity for sure, but I don't think we'll see anything close to the 12 hour battery life they are advertising for the 13" Air.

Parallels 9 release on the 5th of September with Mavs support.

A small "+" for a Sept. 10th announcement of the new Macbook Retinas. I don't know if I should refurb now.

Is the performance difference between the 2.4 GHz and the 2.7 GHz RMPB 15 inch significant? A few weeks ago my employer told me to get a new computer (my old windows laptop was falling apart). I told the tech guy to order me an RMBP 15 inch 2.7/16/256. However, when I received it today I noticed (after tearing off the shrink wrap) that he had accidentally ordered the 2.4 GHz model (still with 16 GB RAM, though).

Am I ever likely to notice the difference in clock speed? I will mostly be doing normal office task, with occasional Lightroom and Illustrator use. I will be running Windows 8 using Parallels, which is why I got the 16 GB model.

Should I be a pain in the ass and tell him to return it and get me the 2.7 GHz model? I am not in the US, so would have to pay for return shipping and other handling costs. Gah, I'm so annoyed right now!

I really don't think it will make that big of a difference unless your doing super labor intensive stuff to your computer and even though probably only shave a few seconds off. You got a banging computer for free be happy!

i have rMBP refurb 2.7GHz with 8MB of cache and 16GB Ram 768GB SSD and my buddy have rMBP 2.4GHz 2013 model with 256 GB SSD and 16 GB ram
trust me you wont gain a lot of speed and if u ask me so it would be more a hustle than a gain for a CPU bump of 0.3GHz :) and besides also the cache on new 2013 2.7GHz is 6MB while 2012 model which i have have 8MB cache :)

Just got my 15" rMBP yesterday :D Its only the baseline but its a HUGE upgrade from my core 2 duo 13" :O :eek::eek: . This is better than Christmas so long as I don't look at the receipt again :O Now I just need to catch up on all that video editing I dodged on account of my Core 2 duo being too slow! Was going for a regular 15" but last minute changed my mind saying what the hell! haha. I know they are updating their line up soon but I guess I can't wait. Besides Im very happy with the performance.

Just ordered my 15" baseline retina refurb would have liked 16gb of ram but couldn't spend the extra 600$ sick of waiting for has well seems like broad well would be the one to really wait for this will be my first Mac super psyched

Kudos to all who made the choice to buy when they needed. I also bought a refurb in June (2.6ghz, 16gb, 512gb) and am very glad to have had this wonderful machine all summer, rather than relying on my iPad since (I sold my cMBP based on WWDC rumors).

There's one thing that's missing from the Haswell discussion here (and on that dreary "Waiting for Haswell" forum): Apple's exorbitantly high prices for SSD, or "Flash" drives as they call them. (The refurb MBP's remain the only models that fall more or less in line with standard MBP pricing, which has always been a reach for a lot of people, but doable.) Judging from rumors, as well as from 2013 Macbook Air pricing, Apple isn't budging on this, despite the fact that standalone SSD prices have fallen over the last year.

Yes, the 11" MBA did get a (long overdue) bump to 128gb, and the 13" is $100 cheaper, but the SSD upgrade prices are still quite high. $300 for 256gb (which gets you to 512gb). Then there's the 768gb option, which I assume will be the same price -- a whopping $400 for a measly 256gb! This is why I didn't go for the top-end refurb 15" rMBP in June. The difference in price from the 512gb model, plus taxes, totaled $465! You can almost buy a whole iPad for that! (Not to mention a really great Sony mirrorless digital camera -- which I did buy with my savings).

Really hoping that next June's (if Intel is on time) Broadwell rMBP will bring a bigger performance leap than Haswell, as well as (finally) reasonably priced SSD options from Apple.
Would love a 1TB rMBP that didn't cost a King's ransom.

I just bought the baseline Mid 2012 13" MBP. I figured it was most likely going to be fazed out soon so I bought one while I could. It's so wicked fast and responsive I'm in love with it.

I wasnt going to get the 15" rMBP but I've just noticed it on the refurb site in Australia for 22% off which puts it in my budget ballpark.

It's a secondary machine for me (I have a maxed out current gen 27" iMac) so I'm wondering if I should bother waiting for the haswell laptops and go for the 13" or get this 15" refurb and have the nicer screen and nvidia card?? I'm sure 7 hours of battery life is enough for me.

Would I lose out on much?

Mind you... this is the 2012 version which supposedly means an older screen that may have problems??

I guess this is the new thread I should be posting in.

I couldn't keep waiting on haswell. I bought the refurb 15" with 16GB and 512SSD. I'm not really happy about it (I really prefer the 13" form factor), but chances are we won't get quad cores and 16GB ram in the 13" til broadwell. My pickup date is the 11th, so if we get rMBPs on the 10th (and the 13" has a quad and 16GB option) I can always return the 15".

Someday, I hope Apple brings a true successor to the 12" Powerbook (no compromises).

I just bought the baseline rMBP 13" and it says it's the late 2012 model. I absolutely love it so far, but shouldn't I have received the early 2013 model??

On this Apple Support Page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4132 it says the Early 2013 model number should be "MD212xx/A" and for the Late 2012 model it should just be "MD212"

My box says "MD212LL/A" but when I click on "About this Mac" it says it's the late 2012 model so I'm a little confused. Also on Amazon it says the "MD212LL/A" is the newest model. ????

Anyone have the Early 2013 model? What does it say when you check "About this Mac"?

The baseline 13" rMBP did not get the 0.1 CPU bump like the other models.

Its up to you but I'd return it and either get the early 2013 or wait for the new one coming up in a few weeks. Do it before you end up filling it up with all your apps and data and enjoying it :D

Congrats! Yeah I would have loved the extra RAM too, especially for my use but was already over my soft limit budget I set on myself XD So far its handling everything I throw at it flawlessly. I even did some 4K editing in FCP X and was pleased.

just ordered a replacement for my dead penryn
to summarize why I bought it now rather than wait:

last but not least ...

American_Cash-590x471.jpg

bang for buck ... equipping the baseline 2.6 Ghz variant (that also has a proper nvidia with 1GB on board) with additional SSD, storage and RAM saves a lot of money otherwise spent on apple tax ... not considering the overall higher baseline price of the rMBP.

... all in all there is little I envy the new models for (granted, USB3 and a thinner/lighter build are nice to have) and although the two whole brain cells that manage to stay rational when looking at shiny new tech do tell me it is the right thing for my req, I cant help but feel a little bummed for having to buy a year old model.

so that's my money on apple axing the Macbook Pro in the next few weeks and focus on the new MacBookAir Advanced line :(

it's been a week since I've picked up my 13" cMBP 2.9. No regrets about not waiting.

It's a huge leap from my 15" Vaio I purchased back in 2007.

It's even better to have all things common across all devices, although a bit of learning curve with the VM for Win 7. All in all, working the way I wanted things to, and making me more efficient.

Long time lurker, first time poster. I just thought I'd share my purchase. I found a 15" base rMBP on Craigslist mid 2012. Originally they posted $1500, but then changed the price to $900 a couple of weeks later. There is a catch however. The Macbook has been dropped and the a few deep gashes in the unibody both on the corner of the base and lid. It was on the corner for didn't affect the screen or otherwise. After a couple of text exchanges they agreed on a price of $800 and that included the box and charger. I couldn't believe it! I'm now playing with it and it works flawlessly. Just a cosmetic eyesore but I can live with it considering the price I paid. Great forum btw and lots of good info!

Great deal on the 15"rMBP! How bad is the cosmetic damage though? Pictures? And did you get it checked or something to see if everything else inside is in order? A dropped laptop might bite you back in the butt months later. (But I'm also paranoid when it comes to my tech)
