My 16" M2 Max MacBook Pro just shipped with FedEx with delivery to Canada. Got the notice from Apple a few minutes ago. Ordered a little late due to my inability to make a quick decision on this one. Upgrading from a 2016 MacBook Pro, so I'm pretty excited! I don't really have GPU workloads outside of World of Warcraft, but the 38-cores will be nice for those heavy PvP fights.

My BTO MBP 16" M2 Max shipped overnight, UPS says 1/31, Apple says 1/30. It's sitting in custom clearance now, so hopefully it will be put on a plane in the next 24 hours.

Took the one above back to the Apple Store today since they announced the M2 generation on day 11 of my return period. Got pretty lucky on the timing, guess I waited just long enough haha!

Couldn't pass up WiFi 6E, 120Hz HDMI and an extra hour of battery life. Especially since it seems like the OLED models might not debut until 2025 or later now. Back to using a 16" with only half a screen working over the weekend though.

Picked this up during lunch. Was a little disappointed since I thought I had ordered Silver; didn’t even notice posting this screen cap. I guess Space Gray is the default on the website now?

They offered to exchange it but apparently the Veteran/Military Discount is only 4% in-store vs 10% online. I don’t really want to go through setting up then returning yet another computer (leave town tomorrow) so I’m just gonna keep it.

Maybe after 17 years of Silver MacBook Pros a change will do me good. Just nervous about durability of the finish.

(Also gonna miss the modern PowerBook G4 look)

Apparently it's not great! The ****ing thing is scuffed already coming out of the box. I don't know if it's the Space Gray or Apple QA has gone downhill.

Back to the Apple Store. If I'm going through this hassle I'm getting Silver.

MacBook Pro Purchasing Round 3

Everyone check. I got Silver right? Here's hoping the one I go to pickup tomorrow isn't scuffed like today.

Waffled back and forth between 512GB and 1TB after seeing the new SSD benchmarks. Any custom configuration pushes it two weeks out though and I need a new computer ASAP.

My new 16" MBP arrived DOA. Keyboard and trackpad are don't work out of the box so I can't even use it. Hoping the Apple Store near me still has this model in stock tomorrow so that I can exchange.

Woo! Finally landed on a computer. Opened it at the Apple Store to ensure it wasn't scuffed like the last one. Working great. Battery life is amazing. It was on my refurb M1 too, so I'll be interested to see if I notice a difference.

Plan to hold to this till they release the OLED MacBook Pros (or I accidentally drop it like my 2019 RIP)

So a (new to me) used MacBook Pro 2019 16" arrived in the mail today. Not as powerful as the 2021 MBP M1 Pro 14", but I feel more comfortable bringing in a used MBP to the office than an expensive new one. Not that we have (known) thieves in the office, but with 300+ people there is bound to be a "bad apple" or two and I don't want to find out the hard way that there is one in the office.

Plus I love getting older computers - my "holy trinity" is Apple computers, Thinkpads, and HP computers, in that order. ;)

Here are the specs:
CPU - 2.6 GHz Intel I7-9750H (base CPU)
GPU - AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4 GB (base GPU)
RAM - 16 GB (base memory)
Drive - 1 TB (better than base 512 GB)

Very good condition except for:
  • Small dent in front right corner, not a problem
  • Infrequently I hear a very short "staticy" noise from the left speaker when playing music over the speakers (haven't tried ear buds yet)
Just upgraded to Ventura (123.2) and installed all my apps. I am using smcFancontrol and the temps are mostly between 90 - 100 F. Gets a little higher during app / OS upgrades, but those are one time events.

Liking it so far, can't wait to bring it into the offoce next week and hook up the three Dell 27" monitors for 4 screens of real estate.

[Edit - corrected typos, spllng is a gud skil]

Congrats! I really think the 2019 16” has been overshadowed by the 2021- models but it’s still a great machine. Enjoy it!

Thanks! So far I am liking it a lot. Really, it is only the left speaker distortion that is a minor issue. I'll look into it to see if a can find a solution, but not a big deal if I can't.

Best part - the price for the laptop (bought off eBay) + tax + shipping, rounded down: $666. 👿

Ordered a 16" 38 core, 96GB ram, 4TB M2Max to replace my i9 64gb/4tb 2019. It's been a great machine but lately I am woking on a lot of stitched 100MP medium format raw files that average 1.5GB to 2.8GB a piece.

I am hoping this provides a good bump in efficiency while working with these large files.

How is the experience of multi-monitors of this Intel MBP 2019? Mine is not good when connected to even one Dell 4k monitor. I have to downgrade the OS to Big Sur so it can barely be functional to keep two monitors on, and the laptop becomes very hot. On Ventura, the laptop can easily go dead and restart when connected to an external monitor. However, I hope this is only my laptop's issue, I hope yours is working fantastically.

So the temperature definitely ramps up with the 3 external monitors, since that should mean the GPU is seeing moderate to heavy use. The overall temperature, as reported by smcFanControl and Macs Fan Control, was in the high 130s or higher before I increased the fan speed.

I find that Macs Fan Control works better than smcFanControl in Ventura (I see odd fan RPM values), but with Macs Fan Control setting the fan speed to 4200 RPM I am getting an average CPU core temperature around 115 F. Without the external monitors and a similar fan speed, I get around 85 F.

So I am not too surprised, and I would like a lower temperature with the external monitors, but 115 F is OK.

I was previously using a 2015 MBP 15" with the same monitors and running the same apps (but with Monterrey instead of Ventura), and I think the overall temperature was in the 100 - 105 F range.c So better, but still heating up since the GPU was being used.

Here is what I see right now for the temperatures with the fan speed selected:

I just replaced my 13" M1 Pro (8GB/256 SSD) with a 14" M2 Max Pro (32GB/1TB SSD) yesterday. As I get more into the video editing, coding, media creation side of things, I found that the M1 Pro would get bottlenecked, especially when working with 4K video. I'm going to give the M1 to my mom, as she has been without a computer for a couple of years and really just needs to be able to check her email and access the internet. I'm still slowly getting the new MBP set up with my development tools, but I've already seen a noticeable difference in a few areas of operation, notably pulling over 800 Mbps on WiFi where the M1 usually pulled around 300-400 Mbps and my Windows desktop pulls between 400-600 MBps from the same room.

Thank you so much for these detailed answers, I am now running Mac Fan Control and setting the fan speed manually too. Very helpful info!

Excellent, glad I could help out. Especially since I in turn also get help from places like here and on reddit, so it is good to be able to help out others.

I just ordered the 16" M2 Max MacBook Pro. I maxed out the RAM (96gb) and bumped the SSD to 2TB.

By way of explanation, I'm coming from a mid-2014 15" MBP that was also maxed out, so I'm planning to keep my new one for 9 years as well.

That's why I maxed out the RAM, as a way of future-proofing....

I never thought I'd need 96GB of RAM, but I want my new machine to last a decade if possible.
