Problem is, wife doesn't want to spring for the i5, too much $$ she says. I refuse to buy a C2D, so I'm hoping the speed bump will bring some i3/i5 joy in lower prices. Entry-level 27, she might go for.

I just hope they do it before the back-to-school runs out, cause we can't wait that long. 🙁

I'm in the exact same position... save the fact that i'm going for the i7.
 
You could very sell see apple putting an i5 as standard for the lowered spec 27 inch iMac come next refresh. With the release of the i7 880 taking i7 870's place, you'll most likely be seeing 880 taking 870's old price, and 870 taking 860's old price. This could also presumably impact 750's price.

Also, high end wolfdales are rather highly priced compared to new clarkdales, in fact half of the new clarkdales go for cheaper than coure2duo wolfldales.

You'll definitely see apple striving to replace the core2duos with clarkdales, as all the new nehalem chips intel makes dynamically underclock or overclock based on load. The i7 860s in the 27 inch iMacs consume less power than the core2duos in the current iMacs when both are idle. It might be a possibility for apple to do a clarkdale and even lower end dedicated gpu in the lowest end 21.5 inch-- but of course there's always the possibility to do the core2duo and 320m to keep their current price strategy.
 
Since the average cycle of the iMac in the buyer's guide is over, I thought the new iMac would be coming pretty soon. Like end of this month or so... Is this really the general conscensus that we'll be waiting till' fall? I mean, Jesus, summer has only just started >_>

If you look at the past, there has only been ONE update after WWDC before August. That was in 2005 when MacBook got updated in July. iMac has never got updated in June or July, always in March-May or Aug-Nove. I would say September, but that's just my guess

I sadly have to agree... which stinks cause then BTS will probably be over 🙁 Way to be the bearer of bad (albeit probably true) rumors hellhammer 🙁
 
when apple redesigns the look of the imac do they announce it @ wwdc for example when the alluminum form was introduced back in 2007 was it at WWDC or was it quiet.

Well I imagine alot of this has to do with Apple's fiscal calendar. So if you notice they release the new iphone on June 21st, so that will give a big hit on Q3 earnings which is probably there slowest quarter. Q3 ends on June 26, so it's no big surprise the release of the iphone is 5 days before Q3 ends. And then they will get a jumpstart on Q4 with continuing iphone sales. Then Q4 will finish off with the back to school rush. The earliest they will release updated imac's is end of September if they need a bump in Q4 earnings or if they are doing well they will release in October to jump start Q1. This is why they won't release anything in July/August because the iphone and back to school rush is enough of a jolt to beat earnings. So the question everyone should be asking is if they can wait until October or even November for the updated imac's?

Q3-April 25 - June 26, 2010
Q4-June 27 - September 25, 2010

No, I'm running such a ghetto set up right now but I'm just to scarred to buy an iMac right now because there is an update looming and rev A apple gear is usually no good.
 
Question: what would it take for them to install two 2.5'' HDDs instead of a single 3.5'' HDD?

I was just thinking how having small SSD boot drives and 7200 RPM storage drives inside the iMac would give it a rather significant boost in speed for the average user.
 
I am soooo needing an upgrade. I'm currently running a single 1.67 Powerbook G4. I use it mostly for audio. I can run like 2 instruments and 3 plugins and then my Mac cries. But............. I'm officially waiting.

Just curious what you think... In terms of performance, how do you think the current top of the line 27" iMac will stack up to your best guess for the next upgrade? Big difference?

Wow this is similar to my jump from the eMac 1.25GHz to the first Aluminium iMac - you are going to be blown away.
 
lol you guys are counting the days when the next refresh is going to happen, I'am counting the days untill i recieve my first imac

The only difference is the GPU so it won't be huge bump, depends on what GPU Apple decides to use. ATI 5850 wouldn't be that much of an upgrade other that DirectX 11, Shader 5.0 and OpenGL (+ few other updated techs). Of course they are fairly important in future games as they will support these new technologies but currently, there wouldn't be much difference.

ATI 5870 on the other hand would provide up to 25% better performance

I was waiting. But then I bought my 27" i5 and it came on Friday.

Sometimes I think you guys get too hung up on waiting (That's not a dig, just an observation) and you can end up waiting forever. I decided that in the end, the one I bought does everything I possibly need and more.

I waited and waited and waited for a Mac mini refresh that never came (this was a long while ago) and when I when I bought my 13" MBP in November everyone was saying to wait as new ones were 'definitely' coming in early Jan. Then late Jan. Then Feb. etc etc. It was April before they appeared. 6months later then when I was told to wait. I'm glad I didn't because in the end, the update to the 13" wasn't that big.

There will always be updates coming. Always. Things progress so quickly but you can wait forever before you buy. iPhones at WWDC and iPods before back to school, but other than that, I think it's pure guesswork on updates.

Just because you buy a machine today and a new one is out on Tuesday, doesn't mean you've mad a bad purchase and your iMac/MBP or whatever is no longer awesome.
 
Im also waiting for a refresh ... or trying to anyway. I WANT ONE BADLY!

My iMac is mainly to use to play games and watch anime. Also for work aswell and a bit of photoshopping, but the hint of a graphics card update is too good to turn down, then again the only game I would play on my Mac would be

Starcraft II
Diablo 3
Valve games.

Anything else, I have a console for, but Im looking at the low-end 27inch mac, but would the graphics card and C2D be sufficent anyway? regardless of a refresh. I just hope they keep the same looking iMac for many years to come.
 
Blu-Ray technology exists so it's only up to Apple do they want it, or not. Currently they haven't and Mac Pro would likely get it first.

Intel Core i3 "Clarkdale" 2.93GHz (option for 3.2GHz Intel Core i5 "Clarkdale" and 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 "Lynnfield")
ATI 57xx with 256MB GDDR3 (option for ATI 58xx with 512MB GDDR5)
4GB RAM
1TB HD

High-end 27"

Intel Core i5 "Lynnfield" 2.66GHz (option for 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 "Lynnfield")
ATI 58xx with 512MB GDDR5
1TB HD

All models have option for up to 2TB HD and up to 16GB RAM. Apple may not use the exact models I mentioned so e.g. 3.06GHz i3 instead of 2.93GHz and 3.33GHz i5 instead of 3.2GHz etc. Can't tell more about the GPU other than mid models will get "Redwood" based GPU and high-end will get "Juniper" based GPU

i dont think i3 is really possible.. i5 desktop dual core is closer as it has intel hd graphics + closer price range to the c2d. the base model 21.5 should have maybe 3.16 6,b cache? or 3.33 no one knows. as with gpus... 57xx would fit priciing description but with massive power saving options i realy dont know what appl0e is thinking. but another... 1 gb video card. when willl the mac pro get that.. its sad how apple doesent want to offer good options for a good price): ): that why mac pro sales are poor. if apple put in 27 inch cinema displa or 20 inch one... it would sell. the quad imac would probably have i7 2.8 ghz standard if discount are given or maybe it would stay the same. for now what i want is an u pgraded cpu, gpu, hdd and ram 🙂 6gb standard? O.O?

Well the thing with the iMacs is that they are fairly consistent in their product update cycles so it can't hurt to wait a bit, especially if you have a more than capable piece of kit to use in the mean time.
 
1gb video card will throw lots of happiness around the world XD. even a 768 mb card will make me 🙂 🙂 🙂 😀. all i can hope for is advanced radeon graphics... btw.. what happened to the gt 130 ); it would be good for base 27 inch...
