Thing is...how many watches represent "sold out"?
Of course they could sell out if there are merely thousands of units, versus millions.
Mine has a tentative ship date of May 13th at the earliest.
Remember all of those reports we had over the last couple months of supply constraints and yield issues? Yeah. Looks like they were correct. There is a very, very small supply of Apple Watches available by the looks of it (which we should have been able to tell what with the Watches all starting at delivering between 4/24 and 5/8). So yes. There's going to be a lot of disappointment and waiting for people for quite a while.
It's amazing, though, that there is this much demand and interest in the product. A good sign, I hope.

42mm space grey sport on launch day. I had my phone on ATT LTE ipad on Tmobile LTE and computer on home internet. Tmobile ipad got in first. was all checked out by 302. sweet vindication for refreshing like a madman for my 6+ and still had to wait an extra week.

That's what I did..tried the ss with link first, said 4-6 weeks..then went to black sports band, and got 4/24-5/8..ordered the link bracelet separate (2-4 weeks).
I was warned by an Apple corporate employee to only order one per Apple ID to be safe but no more than two. Any more and orders may be cancelled even if it is multiple orders.
There are still some day-one orders available, such as the classic band. And I'm not sure about the rest, but the a few of the Sport's were 'sold out' in about 2-3 minutes.
People actually got a delivery date of April 24th? I find that hard to believe since I got my email confirmation at 2:03 AM lol and mines 24th-8th.

Yep ordered the white 42 watch the pink 38 watch the 42 malinese watch, the white band the malinese band several chargers no problems all state the 24th for delivery

Ditto. A bit disappointing, but it's what it is. Order placed at 0008.
Before I got to mine, I did get my wife's 38mm Aluminum Sport Green band at about 0005 (within a minute of the Apple Store app coming back online) and it was 4/24-5/8. She's happy.
One odd thing was the inability to add each watch to the cart. They had to go straight to "place order". It was specifically the watches, as I also ordered a black leather loop and it went into the cart normally.
Probably like 2 of each Sport, 2 of each SS, and 1 Edition

They still also seem to have plenty of SS with Classic Bands in stock. I think they underestimated severely the popularity of the Space Grey Sport. I know I did. I think if they would have offered the Silver Sport Option with a black Sport band that would have appealed to conservative men like my husband who wanted the least expensive option without resorting to loud colors and taken some small demand from the Space Gray Sport.
