True, some people take longer than 14 days to learn if a device fits their usage. But the iPP was released at the start of the holiday season, so most people had all of December to test out the iPP. I suppose the poster could be from a country where holiday return policy isn't available?

What I find curious is that at the point of time the iPad Pro was released till now (3 months?) the poster was apparently expecting that:
  • something major would happen to iOS
  • computers (laptops?) would much more expensive
  • iOS would somehow be "become more desktop oriented as less locked in" - I assume either more OS X or Windows like.
  • iOS would provide support for mouse control.
Either that or the poster was lazy and bought the iPad Pro on a whim without actually doing any research and is actually now regretting the carelessness of that decision.

EDIT: It could be a gift though, otherwise there's no good reason why the poster would buy it and then complain about the points listed...

iPads problem is, that it's getting BORING. Nothing happens to iOS. And for the price of an iPad, you can get a computer. Tablets are just not very useable with a mobile OS, that locks you in anyway.

No good keyboard and NO MOUSE = Not for work

My iPad Pro is a dust collector. . . . .

Focus on making them run better on ALL iOS devices that get the update. As long as a device gets an update, it should run better (faster, smoother, and yes snappier safari) than a previous update.
That just isn't possible. Every now and then you can focus on stability and possibly make a device run better with a new update, but you can't add 1,000 features and make the iPad faster, smoother, and snappier. The more a device can do, the more processing power, storage, and memory it takes.

Also, no thanks on your suggestion to charge for iOS updates again.

Everyone is entitled to a workflow that suits himself/herself best. For me, however, the experience has been just the opposite. The iPad Pro's screen is so nice and battery life is so good (not to mention the Pencil and apps like GoodNotes and OneNote) that I haven't touch my MacBook Air since I bought the iPad Pro.

Yeah, most of the time I force myself to use my MacBook Pro so it doesn't feel like a total waste. I honestly probably shouldn't have upgraded from my old MacBook Pro and saved myself $1,600.

Fear Uncertainty Doubt. Well others beat me to it.
Hahahahahahahaahahaha
Im sorry, this thread is tongue n cheek, right?
Millions are using iPads, most netbooks are dead in drawers.
actually tens of millions, well over 100 most likely. But iPad is dead. 15 million people bought them last quarter but its dead. It's not that people aren't buying, people aren't upgrading. The iPad is that good of a product that most are keeping them 2-3 years

Not going to speak for the guy who wrote that post but in my case I was able to determine within Apple's return deadline that the IPP was not for me. Perhaps others take longer than 14 days to find out that the Pro model is not all it's cracked up to be and thus have no choice but to keep it.

That's a fair enough point.

There's nothing wrong with that. :)

A lot of people I know are still happy using the iPad 2 so the upgrade cycle may stretch even longer than that.
Thats stretching it, but if it works it works. Apple shot themselves in the foot keeping the iPad 2 around till 2014. The lineup became very diluted at that point with so many different iPads it became confusing for people. Then just need to have an iPad mini, iPad and iPad pro. Not the mini 2, mini3, iPad Air iPad Air 2.

Sales are down because there is zero comp and the iPads are still great product

iPad pro helped sales in last quarter but generally people don't see the need to always upgrade iPads each year

iPads aren't going anywhere anytime soon

Agreed. I think people aren't upgrading (either phones or tablets) nearly as often.

Even if its a slowing/small market,

Someone must sell more than others.

Might as well be apple.

Its not doomed until manufacture cost out shadow profits.

Until then,

Good Lord what complete nonsense. The iPad isn't going anywhere, but to say consumers are going for Hybrids is ignoring reality. The Surface division was up 20+% for Microsoft. That ist including other OEMs. Calling the death of the iPad is premature just like Apple zealots predicting the death of Windows and Microsoft.

If you're talking about manufacturers then yes - they've all shifted their focus from tablets to hybrids. This isn't out of a sense of 'where the market is going' as much as pure laziness. "Well, we can't complete with the iPad, so let's go back to our bread and butter, the laptop, slap a touchscreen on it and call it a hybrid."

Consumers on the other hand aren't going wild over hybrids. It's not the "next big thing".

So, then, what of iPad sales? It's actually pretty simple:
  • Kindle (and other cheap tablets)
  • New competition at the high-end (almost exclusively the Surface Pro, even here it's barely a dent)
  • Less of a desire to upgrade/hanging on to older models
  • The Second-hand market
  • Slow-down in Vertical adaptation
  • Novelty has worn out (or at least down)
Does that mean the end of the iPad?

Of course not. Apple will continue to make iPads as long as it makes Apple money. Even with a slowdown, iPads still make Apple a LOT of money. Remember, Apple is NOT other companies. They're not going to kill a money-making product just because some Wall Street people don't know a computer from a hole in their head.

We can safely say the "hype" phase is over. This isn't the end of the iPad, it's just the end of people buying an iPad because it's the "in" thing.

First of all I believe iPads are still a 20 billion dollars business per qtr for Apple. Most company's would die for such a huge business. They are now in the same range as Macs.

Second it was clear that the iPad pro would not be for everyone and by not updating the Air last year it was also clear that this would mean sales would further decline.

In addition to that I am always asking myself what can I do with a new device that I cannot with the old so that I have to update myself. Usually the answer is something like "force touch" in other words - nothing.

Really?? How do YOU know that the reports of the iPad's death is greatly exaggerated?? so why do some people on those tech websites like Zdnet, Cnet say the time of the iPad is nearly over then?!???!!

I think because they are in the business to create views which translates to ads clicked which translates to income.

John Stuart Mill, writing 150 years ago, said "I have observed that not the man who hopes when others despair, but the man who despairs when others hope, is admired by a large class of persons as a sage." In short, pessimism always sounds profound. It's usually wrong and always unpleasant, but it sounds good.

Apple really is, of course, doomed. So are we all. In a very little time, we shall be a feast for impolitic worms and won't worry about the future of the iPad.

Yep - and a large percentage of the growing Surface (not hybrids) sales is the vertical market. Yes, consumers are buying them too, but the boost is most certainly vertical. Just as part of the huge boost iPads got in the iPad 2/3/4 era was vertical markets - and part of the reason for decline is the vertical market.

The problem imo is not hardware, but software and the best example to me is office. For any serious business, ms office is THE standard. But office for Mac is a joke, on iOS there isn't even pivot functionality. Most companies do their reporting still in excel!

How could any serious business even consider switching to Mac or iPad when office for Mac is such a joke. Why o why isn't there still a decent office competitor?

As long as they don't see that, the iPad will just be a YouTube channel for average joe.

This is part of the problem of Wall Street perspective. If there is no year over year growth then there is crisis and the 'next big thing' needs to be wheeled out to sooth spooked rich exploiters (shareholders..). This is nonsense of course, the iPad continues to generate lots of income, generating more this quarter than the Mac lineup did (I don't think I'm wrong there?) yet no one wants to kill that off.

I have a mini 2, it's two years old, I'm in no hurry to upgrade it, yet when I do it will be new iPad, retention will generate continued sales, just the cycle is longer, and infact probably has not been fully established yet.

I agree. I bought the iPad Pro for drawing with the Pencil. That's basically the only thing it does well besides content consumption. But all the "pro" apps are very dumb. Microsoft Office apps are actually among the better ones. The Adobe apps are mostly useless, all one can do with them is scribbling and drafting. I tried Coda for HTML coding and it lacks most of the basic features of a decent text editor. And to be honest how can a $10 app be as good as one that costs $99 on the Mac? I am ready to pay more for good iOS apps, but I don't see developers making them.

iOS now on iPad it's like Windows RT. Apple has to do something about that if it wants to keep the iPad alive.

Thats very true. The office apps are among the better one, but besides consulting some basic sheets, you can't do much else.

Apple needs to react indeed, and not only to keep the iPad alive, but iOS in general.

Thanks everyone for telling and assuring me that the iPad still has a bright future ahead, are definitely here to stay and won't disappear just like netbooks did a few years ago. :) :)

I really(I mean really!!) had very serious doubts about the future of the iPad but I am very very happy now!! :) :) :) :) :) :D :D :D :D :D

Even netbooks didn't really die, they just evolved into Chromebooks and other budget Windows laptops. Similarly, even if iPads became unpopular, they'd just evolve into something else.

I wouldn't worry, I'm loving my iPad pro and nothing will push me back to a laptop soon.
There will always be a place for tablets for a long time. In our house we have four iPads and I can't see my wife or kids looking for anything else soon.
