I’m a little confused here. Is the new multitasking what Stage Manager now is, and therefore only compatible with Stage Manager approved devices? Or is Stage Manager still what it was and this is now compatible with all devices (which seems odd)?

iPadOS 26 supports the following iPad models:
  • iPad Pro (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later)
  • iPad Air (M2 and later)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (A16)
  • iPad (8th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (A17 Pro)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)
That doesn’t imply that all features will work on all of these iPad models. Though Federighi apparently said that the windowing functions will work on all of them.

To copy what? Redmond already has a full desktop OS on tablets for decades.

omg, background tasks on a device, who could imagine that? folders? a pointing cursor? well, maybe buy a device that already offers that.

for me the iPad is a shrunk down version of a Mac, in every way.

Imagine the sheer amount of engineering resources and effort being put into this just so they don't have to release MacOS on the iPad - which has the same processor, same amount of RAM, same amount of SSD size initially

*WHY*, what can be the excuse minus Apple wants a platform it can restrict the apps on

If this UI is simplified and thats the point, then put it on the Mac as well, and let users decide which Mac experience they want - and on what platform, Mac or "iPad", they want

Sounds like a great batch of features - hopefully they’re ready for prime time when the time comes, and not buggy and/or delayed.

It has background app support + sound input/output controls....in addition, the files app has become more like the finder, as well as the addition of the preview app...

c'mon, you can't really argue that iPadOS isn't almost synonomous with macOS at this point....a couple more iterations and iPadOS = macOS.
I agree that it is moving closer MacOS. However, they are not going to let that truly happen because it will eat into their MacBook sales.

It looks like at least the windowing feature will come to all the supported models, regardless of size.

"M series power in a tablet" is just a gimmicky way to use more chips in the same devices, charge more for "Pro" iPads and prevent a situation where annually-updated phones have a newer A-series chip than tablets which aren't updated annually.

I thought, this year, they would give M-series tablets the option to boot MacOS but this update is Apple screaming "we're not doing that!"
