As a guy who said he would never buy such a device especially without retina I gave in and I use it about 90 percent of the time and my 3rd gen the other 10. It's more ideal for reading books for me and school stuff.

Dam I'm so tempted to get one. Especially because I used to have an iPad 3 (and purchased quite a few iPad-only apps), but sold it because I just didn't use it very much since I've also got that tiny 11 inch MBA which I think is more comfortable to use, at least compared to holding that heavy iPad while surfing or whatever you do on your iPad...I would imagine that's different with the Mini though.

Does anyone have that combo, a small MBA plus an iPad mini? Has she/he found it sensible to own both?

edit: oh and also I don't really care about Retina or not. My eyesight is crap anyway, but hey, advantages of the physically underprivileged :D

Yep! We are that family:) both wife and I have 11" Airs as our 'personal' computers and we now (since last week) each have our own Minis. We had one for the family, but it wasn't possible to share it as much as was desired:)
Two totally different devices for completely different tasks. For reading, it's tough to beat an iPad, regardless of size. Books, web, PDFs, doesn't matter...with the iPad as well, you're never really concerned about battery life. They're meant to be used 'unplugged'. Our Airs need electricity. I find myself leery of using the MBA without power nearby. The 15" rMBP seems to have changed this paradigm a bit...we've seen as much as 7 hours unplugged. The 11" Air though, lucky to get more than 3 hours without plugging in (@ decent brightness levels).

As well, any kind of media enjoyment...movies, Netflix for tv shows, music, newspaper and/or RSS...essentially all of my magazine and newspaper subscriptions have transitioned to e-scripts. No need to fill up the bathroom with paper mags;)

Only three hours with an air? Yikes. I was thinking of getting an air for my next laptop...currently have 2012 non retina MBP, but I wonder if Apple just goes with one line of laptops in the future?

He's not lying. I was lucky to get 3 hours on mine before selling it. It was pretty horrifying actually.

Thanks for your answer! Well, looks like I'm at least gonna try it out then :)

And regarding battery life on the MBA, I agree that it's been a bit underwhelming, but I'm pretty sure I get more than 3 hours out of mine. Like 5 I'd say...but that depends heavily on what I do on it, obviously.

I have this setup. Got an older, late 2010 MBA and a 16gb wifi mini.

The mini gets used a lot - I generally use the Air for productivity stuff that I definitely couldn't do on the mini - recording in Logic, heavier photo editing, video editing sometimes. Anything that requires lengthy amounts of typing.

Mini gets used for almost everything else.

It's a good combo though. Rarely have to worry about mini battery life, and I have a small Targus bag that carries both and weighs next to nothing, so transport of both options is very easy.

I'd recommend it.

Definitely agree. I use this for general browsing, and light school stuff. My MacBook will be for the more intense schoolwork as well my baseball research/blogging.

I find my iPad mini is great at general stuff, and I enjoy using it to read but my laptop is still my main machine. Even using the web browser can be a bit tricky, that is moderating here at MR is better suited with a Mac then an iPad. Additionally some sites are also better if you go and use a laptop. Not that they look different but if you need to interact with the site.

Regarding iPad mini

iPad mini is awesome, I got my iPad mini two months back as it was gifted by my brother. The features are really cool and the retina display looks brilliant.

Oh Anna, do you see what comes in when you accidentally leave the door open?

That's why we can't have nice threads.

Well, try to be more careful next time.

Regards,
Tom
My mini is the perfect combination of sweet and salty.

just replaced our 2 first gen ipads with a new iPad and a 32 mini on order. can't wait to get it this week.

Baseball fan eh? Twins fan by any chance? :) just checking your handle and making assumptions:)
I played my whole life, through college at UDub (Washington). I'm now enjoying 'the other side'. I'm in my fourth year coaching my eight year old son's team. Two years of TBall, this is our second year of 'coach pitch'. Love it. Easily the coolest 'dad' thing I've had the pleasure to do thus far. It's like learning the game all over again!

Oh yeah, big Twins fan. I loved coach pitch as a kid, and I can't wait until I have sons so I can show them the game that I love. Hopefully it isn't for awhile though, seeing as I'm only 19! :p

I picked up a Blue Flame screen cleaner for my Mini today. It's a little ball. Kinda cool. Beats the cloth I was currently using.

Anyone else tried it before?

Can I suggest something prodiuctivity based but slightly different?

I use Splashtop 2 to remotely access my Windows Machine on my iPad and Android tablets. iTunes link. Works great over my local wireless network. It pretty much lets me do everything my PC can do on my tablet. Works on OS X too but I haven't used it on Mac for a while.

Some examples (click for full size - these are screenshots from my iPad):

iTunes on the Mini:

VirtualBox on my Mini (Windows 8 & XP at the same time).

LibreOffice on the Mini.

I have been known to spend hours playing Civilization V on my tablets over Splashtop. The only pain is it'll require you to have your MacBook on whilst using it but if you're at home and want to do some work whilst in bed or on the couch on the Mini, Splashtop might be handy!

EDIT: On "sweetness", the iPad Mini has fast become my most used gadget and by far my favourite. I don't leave home without it any more. :D

Oh man, I just downloaded splash top....this might be one of the best apps that I could download. Especially since I have the 16gb mini...more often than not I'll have access to my laptop when I need to do productive work. Wow, thanks!

This second page of this thread is making me LOL so hard. :p

And yeah, the mini is sweet. I really hope the people who are upset over it not having retina are just being sarcastic.

99.9% of everything you see out and about has pixels. Is it more noticeable after looking at a retina screen? Sure, but don't force yourself to look for it.

I keep misplacing the cloth I use.

I searched their website for it and could not find it. Never saw it at my local Kohl's either.
