Without owning one personally, I imagine it has a built in torrent client with a web UI and DLNA or some other streaming protocol to feed content to iOS devices.

not a built-in but it has 3rd party apps like Transmission which can be installed from the wd app library.

yes, wd nases has web ui, and media streaming (dlna) option for example. and with apps like nplayer, you can access easily to shares using smb protocol.

I have to assume this is the reason most people feel it's superior:

"My clapped out computer which I think still represents a standard non-tablet computing experience is a lot worse than my brand new tablet with a SoC that's faster than said computer (and costs pretty much the same as a new laptop)".

Cognitive dissonance is a heck of a thing

Apple doesn't offer options much better than what I had. The new MacBook has a great screen, but that's pretty much it. MacBook Pros are overkill for my needs, too expensive, and not thin/light enough. It ain't cognitive dissonance, it's an informed consumer choice.

I barely use my MacBook Pro since I got the 12.9 pro...nice to have through

I agree. I'm on iOS 100% of my computing time at home and I got rid of my MacBook Air because I was never using it. However, my wife has a MacBook Pro that is still available, and I have a headless PC running as a server. If I didn't have fall back options, I probably would have kept the Air.

I can accomplish just about everything I want to on the iPad, outside of some side gig AutoCAD.

However, I won't preclude the future possibility that my needs change and I have to get another Mac. But for now, I really enjoy this computing experience.

My iPad would replace my iMac if I were able to download torrents and transfer files. I probably can't discuss what I get, but that's the only thing I can do with a computer that I can't do with an iPad.
I highly recommend a Synology NAS running Transmission. You can upload torrents to a "watch" folder with their iOS apps. Buy Infuse Pro, then point it to your NAS and you are in business.

It would replace my Mac if Apple did a Surface Pro with it, but as it stands IOS just doesn't have so much that I require from OSX and Windows...

However it has replaced my Mac when it comes to what I use when I go out and need something casual, mainly my Mac stays at home for more resource intensive use.

I would love that device.

It will never fully replace my Mac, but if you are working with ratios

At Home
iPP: 100%
Mac: 0%

At Work:
iPP: 70%
Mac: 30%

For me the 30% is still the critical 30% that makes me the most money for my time. But that is still a beautiful trade-off for me. I expected too much from an iPad it being a laptop replacement, but I found it works best by using the device that is in front of you, and more and more it is the iPad that is getting the job done.

On the other hand, I still like working on a 27-inch screen for 3-4 hour stretches.

What I find interesting is in conference calls, screen shares, and watching video, I use the iPP more than the MBP because it is faster, and 100% more silent, and then it makes my MBA experience better because I do not have to run these CPU heavy apps since I have delegated them onto the iPad.

My MBA has actually turned into a Chromebook, because all it opens is Chrome, all others apps I prefer using an iPad.

I had gotten the iPad Pro a few months ago and just this week picked up a Smart Keyboard and an Apple Pencil. It was a good tablet before, but now with the accessories it has all but killed my Mac for my usage. I use my Mac to do a little bit of analytical work, but everything else I've been doing on my Pro and I've been ecstatic. So glad I opted for cellular as well. This is the computer of my dreams. Really glad I splurged on the accessories.
Don't understand why Apple and other users want a tallet to be a computer?
I like my tablet as a tablet no keyboard only the pencil and use it as an fan, my MBP is way more then a tablet ,

I think both devices are computers. Apple sees the iPad as the future of personal computing, that is the message they send out during their product keynotes.
