What's really bothersome to me is that there is no way to print directly from the iPad to printers that are connected via USB to an Airport Express. It seems like they also have no intention of ever fixing it too as this issue has been around since the iPad came out. I imagine they want to limit functionality like this so they can keep the iPad a separate device from the MBA, MBP, and iMac lineups. Otherwise, it may cannibalize the sales of full-fledged computers, particularly with the iPads price point so much lower than even entry level prices into the computer lineup.

/rant

Apple's prior comments were along the lines that it cannibalizes PC sales at a far greater rate than Macs. Limiting functionality isn't really a good thing in this regard. I'm sure they're paying close attention, but if someone is choosing an ipad over the purchase of an Air, the question becomes is that leading them more toward the 16GB model or a 64GB model. Anyway it's still too limiting to work as a primary machine at this point, and printing really isn't the barrier there.

Air Print Activator.

Unfortunately, Air Print Activator no longer works with IOS version 5 or later. Fingerprint or Printopia are our only options for non-Airprint printers.

I'm dealing with a Brother HL-1440 in getting connectivity from iPad. My trial period with Fingerprint had mixed results. At times no connectivity.

So I strongly agree with OP, major screw up on Apple's part.

re read the post then?

he said his BROTHERS printer, not epson.

that problem he has is that his printer doesnt work. its a personal problem not a problem with the ipad.

His brother is on a different network since he lives in his own apartment Take it over to his place when you need to print.

Still works fine for me.

Really? Mine stopped working after the upgrade from IOS 4 to 5. Maybe you have an Airprint supported printer. Can you give your make and model?

Loss of support for IOS 5 is well documented on Air Print Activator's web site.

The problem is simple: The drivers for every printer are different. And they are compiled for x86. iPad is ARM based.

Apple either:

1. Supports random printers from the past few years, and people complain when their printer isn't supported. Drivers could be stored on Apple's servers so that you don't waste gigabytes of data on printer drivers on your iPad.

2. Come up with a generic wireless printing standard that printer manufacturers can implement.

Going with 1 means that things continue on the same path, more proprietary drivers that eventually have support dropped and break on future OS versions. 2 means a simpler user experience down the road.

I don't know what you're talking about... here's their website right here: http://netputing.com/airprintactivator/airprint-activator-v2-0/ its been working fine, and they've been updating it regularly, most recently on March 17th 2012.

Thanks for reply. Do these work for selecting print range?

Work for print range and draft quality selection?

It does not, because Apple does not yet support either of those features in iOS currently.

However, FingerPrint/Printopia does have a print to PDF option which sends the document to a specified folder on your computer and would allow you to then adjust the settings to your liking.

Reality: the biggest iPad screwup isn't lack of universal printing, but, rather, the lack of no AM radio tuner.

Yes, I know you there are apps that simulcast many AM radio stations, but, frankly these are poor excuses for the "real thing." None of these apps have static or interference or poor reception during the day -- all of the reasons why we all love AM radio.

So until Apple wises up and puts a real analog crystal AM radio inside the iPad (can't be wasting battery power, right) the iPad is essentially useless. Apple, no one wants to listen to crystal clear digital sound anymore than they want all their reading material on those ridiculous PDFs and other digital doc formats that keep a desk free of stacks of paper.

Now if you'll excuse me. I'm so worked up now I need to put a 78 on the Victrola and take a rest on the chaise.

Hmmm.

I have not had a printer since I have had a computer (20+ years). I find them a waste of space, paper etc.

I am not even sure what people print anymore? Airline tickets? this can be done using almost any smart phone.

I have a Scanner App, that can not only scan items, but you can attach them as emails or even fax (for a cost). So sending docs to official agencies can be bypassed by this means.

Not meaning to try and derail this conversation, but WHAT do people print now a days, that can't be either scanned by device and emailed, or hell, even just photographed and sent via email?

Just curious. I mean, I managed to buy a house, transferred the appropriate docs to my Realtor and Banks etc just using CamScanner or some such thing.

Other than that, if I am really in a bind, I email the doc to work and print it there :D

and 128 gig option.

This for sure, with a higher resolution screen and an ever increasing size increase in files I don't think they can sit at 64 gb much longer and 16 gb is just pathetic, its the capacity of the nano which only plays music!

Bulk up the iPad with gigabytes of unnecessary, poorly written drivers that cause slowness and instability? No thanks.

Drivers are exactly what causes many of the problems that plague PC's. It is to the iPad's benefit that it avoids this altogether.

Driver-less printing is the future and I applaud Apple for forcing the issue. And if you don't want to buy a new printer check out Printopia for Mac or Fingerprint for Windows.
I just downloaded and installed Printopia at work and no dice. It may be that the work router is not serving up the needed information, but for whatever reason it does not work. I will try it tonight at home and see if it works there.

Weird. The only thing I can think of is that the WiFi network needs to be compatible with Apple's Bonjour technology (this is usually seamless). If this is a problem with the network itself, even a dedicated AirPrint compatible printer will not function. Try double-checking that the Bonjour/iTunes ports are open on your router configuration.

There is a Virtual Printer you can use with DropBox to send files and have them print remotely at home. You can also try popping a message off to their support team.

Still no all encompassing print function for any printer on your wireless network. I have a common brother wifi laser printer but NOOOO I can't print to it from the iPad. Terrible.

Not a screwup, it was done by design.
If they tried to include the printing function and it was not working that would be a screwup.

I would have to agree that the iOS devices try to not do print operations well because of their design. These devices were originally envisioned as paper replacements. Since I run a paperless office, it works fine for me but not everyone is paperless right now which makes the transition tough for anyone that wants to print off of an iPad or iPhone. Normally, when I need to print something, I just go to a FEDEX/Kinkos or I can print in the office but it's really rare. I print maybe 3 times a year? Everything else is on tablets or phones now. While I do have a HP color laser that has Airprint and E-print, the frequency of my usage is just not enough to warrant having any type of print function available. If you really want a section of a website, I would suggest color photocopying the iPad itself. Works fast and isn't a hassle.
