I HOPE they remove ALL ports, just so that a good % of people who cheered over the removal of the 3.5mm port, can be horribly inconvenienced as well.
Apple would make more “bank” from a new port-less charger/data transfer UBC ended cable, that goes into perhaps a specialized power brick made just for that task…Why would Apple make their iPhones port-less when they make bank from all of the accessories they sell for it like lightning cables?
I converted my wired CarPlay to wireless using an $80 USB dongle that plugs into the car. Not that Apple should rely on something like that, but you might be interested in it.CarPlay wasn’t mentioned, but that’s probably one of the most important features people would lose.
I just purchased a new vehicle that doesn’t have wireless CarPlay so the chance of me buying a portless phone is pretty well zero.
Apple makes virtually nothing off of this sort of stuff.Apple would make more “bank” from a new port-less charger/data transfer UBC ended cable, that goes into perhaps a specialized power brick made just for that task…
Which is what they've been doing across the entire iPad line. iPhone going this way is inevitable but they're likely waiting for a hard date such as 10 years from the introduction of Lightning. The consumer backlash over this will be immense. If Apple were as “green” as they claim, they would replace lightning with USB-C, it would make things a whole lot easier…
Not if you put a USB C port in them.Going portless is not a good idea. You lose faster, more efficient charging. You have to spend $40-$50 on a magsafe charger + the wall plug. You lose out on wired data transfer and backups. You‘re screwed if you have wired Apple CarPlay. All around lose-lose, and for what gain? Improved water resistance? The current iPhones are already water resistant enough.
Good point, I’m in the same boat. Totally forgot about that.CarPlay wasn’t mentioned, but that’s probably one of the most important features people would lose.
I just purchased a new vehicle that doesn’t have wireless CarPlay so the chance of me buying a portless phone is pretty well zero.
But if Apple releases a port-less iPhone and it’s really good, every other manufacturer is going to do the same.If they take away the port and all the buttons, I'm switching away from iPhones. I don't want to, but I refuse to accept that level USELESS form over function from those idiots. Buttons make operation a lot easier than hand gestures. Speaking of which, I have a hand gesture up right now to Apple for even considering such a stupid move. So I hope this is just another BS prediction by morons who quite frankly don't know their backsides from a hole in the ground...
Not really, personally, I haven't used the wire to transfer data with my phone for years (not since I can backup with icloud). I'm sure it's a vocal minority who wants that. Those "deaf" pucks would not go to waste, I would buy one. They can charge more for that data version.I think it's too late for communications over MagSafe. If one of concerned over e-waste, imagine the plethora of tossed MagSafe pucks that are deaf. Not to mention the added frustration of trying to find the one capable puck out of a pile of older ones. Unless there is some hidden wireless capability with MagSafe everyone has missed, it's going to be a mess if they finally introduce it. *shrug*
Did you read the article? It takes an extra 47% to charge an iPhone wirelessly right now. In the future, I’m sure Apple will figure things out.How much energy is really being wasted? Apple's MagSafe and all Qi charging simply trickle charges all devices once they approach full capacity. How is that any different from wired charging? All iPhones spend most of their lives trickle charging on a wired or wireless charger.
Just curious, you said $20 to $30 dollars per month on cables, I assume that’s per year, not a one time purchase. What happened to you where that was necessary? We have quite a few lightning cables in our home, many that are just about as old from when Apple started selling them.I can feel that. We were spending about $20 to $30 a month on cables, and since we began to swear off lightning we haven't replaced any of our USB C or MagSafe cables. I think we might have one lightning cable left for some first-gen AirPods that refuse to die.
Seriously, get a wireless adapter - $100 or less. I got one for my last car, LOVED it. I just traded for a 2022 model that has wireless built in, so I passed the adapter on to a friend.CarPlay wasn’t mentioned, but that’s probably one of the most important features people would lose.

Never heard of this, I’ll look into it. Thankscarplay2air solved this
I didn't know those weren't licensed to do carplay. Interesting, but that does explain all the bad reviews. It's always harder to do it via hacking than licensed. (with full documentation!)Those are all hacking devices. There is no legal way for a third party device to output the CarPlay protocol. If Apple made a first party wireless dongle, I might reconsider.
You are right - seeing it alone and in comparison to what e.g. servers eat, it is small. How much energy is that really? About what it takes to heat up the coffee I’m drinking right now? I agree that we should look for ways to avoid wasting energy but not sure that this would have any impact.
An Apple Car sound like a solunion 😂My Not-So-Humble Reaction...
Apple needs to get a grip already.
Nobody really needs yet another non-standard standard. Moreover, there's absolutely no point because everything's got WiFi already. Is Apple saying they can't use N / AC / AX which already exist everywhere?
Honestly, I don't give a toss about the 1/8" port any longer. Seriously, who the heck cares. Almost everybody uses BT headphones or earbuds right now. Heck, my Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra doesn't have an 1/8" port. It's not like it's just Apple ffs.
EDIT: What's with the whole port-thing anyhow? Apple touted MagSafe for years. Everyone loved it. Then they decided to drop it. They pushed Lightning everywhere, once again for years, but now it's a dead issue (except for iPhones and iPads) and of course then they whine and complain when the EU says they're going to push through a legal requirement to have a single standard, and that that standard should be USB-C. But Apple's already just about abandoned everything but USB-C!
The only thing I've got to say about wireless charging (which in general I'm all for) is that car wireless chargers, in my experience, blow chunks. I can't begin to count how many problems I've had trying to use them and use them compatibly with the hardware I've owned, meanwhile all the desktop chargers I own work just fine, tyvm.
