Very helpful. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your "experiment" with all of us. Very cool...

Good experiment. Thanks.

I've noticed a large improvement in battery life when I turned off GPS. Now I leave 3G and push on and the battery lasts just about as long as my 2G.

Yeah, more than likely the battery just needed to be charged / discharged a few times.

BINGO, I finally found good settings that give me what I want from the iphone battery life. (basically I would be happy with a longer standby time).

For anyone thinking that their battery is poor, maybe it isnt and you need to check the USAGE time as this is the time that apps, bluetooth or something else may be running even with your phone in sleep mode.

I have set:

Bluetooth OFF
Push OFF
3g ON
Wifi ON
Location Services OFF

(it is better to have this on if you want faster downloads whilst the phone is in sleep mode to check your mails as it uses wifi before 3g and 3g eats more battery)
Fetch new data = 30 minutes
(I have mobile me and exchange accounts) I intend to try push turned on next time round.

with all the above settings my phone battery icon is still at 100%
usage = 57 mins
Standby = 13hrs 3 mins
Call time current = 20mins

From what I can gather, my average *possible* usage from the battery is around 11 to 12 hours although this will degrade the more standby time i get.

I am very chuffed now as for me the main thing was going to bed (with the iphone fully charged) then waking up to find my iphone only last halfway through the day.

still going strong with my settings above
check the usage, standby and battery icon :D

Usage and Standby are the same for me. How do those two differ? They both say about 10 hours but it has been left on Standby most of that time. Why would it say 10 hours for Usage?

Thanks.

Hat means that an App has been running whilst your phone has been in standby, could be bluetooth, push, anything really. Thats what was annoying me, I wanted the phone to not use any real power when it is in standby.

from the iphone manual:

See your usage statistics: Choose Usage. There, you can see:

Usage—Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full
charge. iPhone is awake whenever you’re using it—including making or receiving
phone calls, using email, sending or receiving text messages, listening to music,
browsing the Web, or using any other iPhone features. iPhone is also awake while
performance background tasks such as automatically checking for and retrieving
email messages.

Standby—Amount of time iPhone has been powered on since its last full charge,
including the time iPhone has been asleep.

Current period call time and lifetime call time.

Amount of data sent and received over the cellular data network.

battery

mostly edge, very little 3G, fex texts, a few calls, some app use and lite email. no location services, no push, manual fetch.

on 3G i was getting just 2 hours with 20 standby. i think it's meesed up. any ideas?

seems real low even for EDGE?

:confused::apple::mad::D:cool:

image taken right after battery died and i pluged in the power. i will continue to test out different configurations for a few days and upload images here. if it is a continued problem for me i will go get a new phone or battery replaced.

it still is a great device.

battery

just because 1 iphone gets 5 hours doesn't mean all will. there may be defects in some phones or batteries? nothing is perfect. right now i am getting about 4 hours:

no 3G
no location
no push
manual fetch

i have wi-fi enabled but for some reason i never can stay on it.

if you are supposed to get 5 hours with 3G, shouldn't you get more with out it?

when i had everything turned on i got 2 hours.

WTF?

battery

here is the latest. The image was taken about 10 min after the 10% warning.

3G OFF
location OFF
push OFF
fetch MANUAL
wi-fi ON (it doesn't connect and/or never stays connected)

I spoke with Apple this morning and with them have made an appointment at the Apple store tomorrow night. Per the rep on the phone I am to back up my phone before I go, and make sure i am a few minutes early. They will examine the phone and most likely just replace it.

I will post the outcome after.

After the battery dies this time i am going to do the same test with 3G ON. I will then post my findings.

regardless of my issues I LOVE THIS DEVICE.

3G ON
Push ON
Wifi ON
Bluetooth OFF (ON for 4 hours)
Location Services OFF

Usage so far of:

3hrs 54 min

Standby

13hrs 35 min

Still have 2/3rds of battery left !!!

After a week of charging and turning location services off (which was the BIG battery killer) things are looking a lot better for battery power !

Yea, Spacetycho, I'd say you got a bad battery. I just screen shotted my phone at 5 hours 30 minutes usage, 17 hours standby, and it got another 20 minutes of video before dying completely.

Phone has only been through one full drain/charge cycle so far, so it will probably improve even further with more break-in.

Settings:
3G ON
GPS OFF
Wi-Fi OFF
Location OFF
Push OFF
Brightness 50%

Posting from my iPhone currently so I'll attach screenshot tomorrow. Good luck at the Apple store!

I'm looking at your screen shot and it doesn't match the post. According to the screen shot you got 22 hours of standby time since the last charge, not 2 hours and 20 min. Plus you are getting almost the 5 hours of usage that they advertise. Sounds to me like your battery is working fine. Give it a bit to break in. 22 hours is a long time on standby. There should be no problem charging it at night that way.

That's a very helpful and informative test. So much for all of the adolescent chat...
