One thing I want to point out: if you look closely at the pictures, you can see that the Apple logo is a little chipped off. That's how it came out of the box, and one of the things that pissed me off about the build quality.

My white phone seems almost impossible to show a scratch. Glad I went that route. When I looked at the black it certainly was pretty looking but it also showed every blemish and finger print right out of the box.

Scratches on screens and buttons = Annoying and bad

Scratches on backs = Character

People need to start getting over this kind of thing. Phone cases are the most ridiculous things in the world. It's the same as wrapping your blue-jeans in plastic when you walk around. First off, that would look dumb, and secondly, blue jeans look better once they're worn in. Just like phones.

I understand screen-protectors, but the iPhone's plain old glass seems to be the best screen-protector I've seen so far.

Seriously?

Alright, I'm just as anal or more than the next guy, but c'mon. We're getting a little carried away here.

Now granted, Apple has a history of releasing ridiculously-scratch-prone devices that are intended to be carried in the owner's pocket — the first iPod nano comes to mind — but I think we take our criticism too far.

Has anybody ever owned... a car? Y'know when it's brand new, and scratch-free? And now? Or hell, what about after that first wash and dry? Tiny swirl marks from the towel you used to dry it off. Swirl marks on a car's finish is just an accepted product of ownership. You could have swirl marks on a $40,000 car!

I would consider swirl marks on a $300 phone to likewise be a simple effect of ownership. I feel pretty confident keeping my iPhone 3G in a simple synthetic-leather eyeglasses slip case, in my pocket. And again, to qualify myself, I will probably freak whenever I do get a substantial scratch on my phone...

I have the white iPhone 3G. I don't use cases and I switch my phone atleast once a year anyways, so I flaunt it the time I have it.

I've had the white iPhone 3G since launch day, and I still haven't seen a single scratch on the back of my phone (none on the front either). Just the other day, I was running to catch a train here in NY and I had the phone in my hand and literally accidently banged the phone INTO THE TRAIN! I thought for sure it was gonna be scratched and was scared to look at how bad the damage would be once I got aboard the train. I stared really hard in the train, and even some more when I got home, only to find not a single scratch even after examining under good lighting. Now im not sure if I may have missed them or not since its a white casing.. but I certainly stared as hard as I could for a good amount of time and saw nothing. It still looks as flawless as Day 1.

Maybe people should invest in the white one because its less apparent obviously? By the way, today I accidently banged it in the turnstyle on my way to catch the subway too...still no scratches. I need to be more careful though LOL.

Exactly, got my Bestskinsever skin before i got my new iphone. Looks perfect and it actaully has a slightly better grip. I dont know why everyone doesn't get one?

(I hate scratches - I have a skin for my MB Air, Blackberry, and camera)

Yes, but...

People need to start getting over this kind of thing. Phone cases are the most ridiculous things in the world. It's the same as wrapping your blue-jeans in plastic when you walk around. First off, that would look dumb, and secondly, blue jeans look better once they're worn in. Just like phones.

I disagree. Phone cases are useful especially if they have a belt-clip that comes off easily when you get a call. Much better than trying to get it out of your jean’s tight pockets everytime it rings!! How annoying is that... especially if you are sitting down.

With making the blue jeans analogy. I used to think jeans looked pretty cool ‘n’ trendy with holes in them... until I discovered I was walking around with a great big hole just between my legs where you can see my butt (well, the most dangerous part of my boxer shorts). Ahhh, reminiscing all those times going up escalators without knowing.

Had my phone since launch day last year and found the back to have a good bit of scratches but still quite happy with it as it was able to take some drops and the front is still generally scratch free

It happens as all phone can get scratched and will after a few months of use

Haven't you guys ever had an iPod? Those scratches, especially the small swirl marks that appear all over the back almost come naturally on that type of shiny material. Go look at the hood of your car in sunlight, it probably has those swirls too. In theory you could buff them out for a bit of time but they'll inevitably come back. You should probably instead just stop worrying about it or buy a nice Vaja case to protect it and keep it stylish.

You must have scratched against other hard sufaces. I have had mine in a soft case from the moment I bought it, i just removed it to check and it is scratch free. And even if it wasnt It would not bother me as long as the phone works.

I put my iPhone on a stainless steel counter, and know there are serious groups of scratches in each of the four corners... The natural scratches don't bother me. But man, oh man, do the noticeably scratches bother me...

WTF? seriously, some of you guys are so anal... of course you're going to get swirls and scratches... its a damn phone. Nothing is going to be scratch proof..of course if you look CLOSE enough you'll find scratches in anything.... whats the big deal? ITS a damn phone, why don't you guys keep it in a damn museum or leave it in the box. that way it won't get scratched.

There are those who get annoyed at scratches on their new iPhone.

And there are those who get annoyed at those who moan about getting scratches on their iPhone.

Calm down ladies and gentlemen. Just be happy and grateful that you even have an iPhone 3G in your hand!

who honestly cares if you got scratches on your iphone? especially the back, that has absolutely no effect on anything, and no one's gonna think your iphone is "ugly" because it has a couple scratches on the back. And the front is quite resistant to scratches, yeah, you'll get a couple, but it doesn't effect the touch screen or make things unreadable at all.
You guys are too anal(lol) about this crap

Though I tend to generally agree (as I said above, mine has them), I can understand some being anal about their phone which they spent several hundred dollars on

Exactly. I'm locked into a 26 month contract here, and after babying my phone for two weeks, it's already scratched to hell. Well, ok - it's not THAT bad, but still. I shudder to think what it's gonna look like in six months, let alone two years.

Meanwhile, owners of the first iPhone still have phones without a single scratch. THAT'S why I'm so annoyed. Apple finally decides to grace us with an iPhone that will actually function here, but then they cheapen it by making it a tenth as durable as the first iPhone.

this might sound crazy but im not even opening the box to my iphone until i recieve all 3 cases i ordered (griffin elan form, best skin ever skin, some other leather holster case)

Mine was the SE T610

my most Scratch-Prone Device ever used was the SE T610. The black scratched, aluminum dented and the nav stick broke off in less than 6 months. I tried to take care of it but it was such a crappy built phone. The iPhone on the other hand is not a crappy built phone, is how you take care of it.

I had the 1st gen iPhone in a silicon case for a year, no scratch. Been using a case for my iPhone 3G, no scratches. I just don't know why people complain about scratches or print marks when you can easily solve this by using a case.

The new HTC touch diamond, Samsung i900 are also prone to scratches and print marks. Even my piano, glass table, glasses, LCD monitor etc...wtf???

I guess for some of you, phones are objects of affection. That usually lasts for the first 2 weeks for me. After 2 weeks its just a tool.

I'm using my Blackberry to crack lobster shells as I write this.

Don

ROTFL!

Just like with a brand new car, that gets parked crosswise across 2 slots at the farthest rear corner of any parking lot until the inevitable first door ding, and afterward is driven like a demolition derby banger.

So it was with my 1st gen iPhone, and so it will be with the new one. I think the plastic back (I have the black model) is amazingly durable, especially compared with the 5.5G iPod (O..M..G). But people, it's polycarbonate plastic, and it's gonna develop at least those ultra-fine, nearly invisible scratches as soon as you open the BOX. Anyone who says their polycarbonate anything has no scratches is in denial. I baby my new iPhone, but the Apple logo and the bezel and yes, even the plastic on the back have some degree of scratching. When it reaches a certain point, I'll toss the case and just carry it in my pocket. It's part of the cost of doing business, and I personally have stopped obsessing about it. As with a recently reformed alkie, though, it hasn't been very long, so I'm waiting for relapses. Cheers! :D
