Damn, some of you take this crap way too seriously, I've taken some amazing pictures with my iPhone, and there's plenty of them to be found in the pictures thread on top of this forum. Is there additional stuff I wish it did? Sure, although we have an endless list of photography apps that can do some really trick stuff, and normal people don't go around blowing pictures up ten times their original size and then putting them under a magnifying glass. Nokia has always put great cameras in their phones, too bad the other parts of the phone are garbage, might as well just get a camera then if all that matters is picture taking.

Next summers iPhone will likely have a better sensor, so untie your panties people.

how is this overreacting? The OP made a rediculous statement, others corrected him, he then still makes rediculous statements, gets beat down again, and now you're claiming that everyone is overeacting since the iphone4 isn't the best phone camera out there

I love my iPhone 4 but it clearly isn't THE BEST in everything it does. Get over it people.

Yes, the pixel density is important, but the OP wasn't comparing camera phones to DSLRs, they were comparing the iPhone to other camera phones and the fact remains that the iPhone 4 is not the best camera phone available.

Also, the N8 does compare quite well against P&S cameras with a similar (actually bigger in many cases) sensor and decent (for a P&S) glass lens.
Incidentally, the pixel density of the iPhone 4's sensor is around 33Mp/cm2 (i.e. worse than the pixel density of the N8), and the pixel density of the N8 is around the same as most P&S cameras

Exactly, and I said, that all I wanted is an AGILE iphone camera. One that would shoot better in the dark and be able to cover most of my activities for when Im not using my main camera. I also said that I would like to see how the N8 handles low light situations as well. I am not expecting these cameras to ever get sensors as dense as on my camera, but it would be better if they focus in making them handle better so that we stop seeing those dark videos and even darker photos. Nokia with f/2.8 is showing the way, but instead of 12 useless Mp it could have gone a lot less, like 4-5

Let me guess, you don't own a DSLR, I will put money down that all you are doing is Google searching terms and hoping to sound like you know what you are talking about
don't you ll lose.
1) The sensor size number is not squared, its a linear number.
(The actual sensor diameter is roughly 2/3 the "sensor image size" )

2) You pulled up a chart saying the 1/1.83" sensor is small when compared to other sizes.. Do you even know what those Bigger Sensors are housed in ?
What do you mean? Why should I know where are they housed in???
4) You have no idea what you are talking about
Even a nice point and shoot Camera like an SD870 has an image sensor size of 1/2.5"
If THAT is a nice p&s, then I prefer my iphone as a camera...

And last calm down...
If you want nice p&s I can suggest you, but ask politely :)

What are you talking about? I didn't make a ridiculous statement, I just forgot about the N8. The N8 has a better camera, but it's not that much better than the iPhone 4 imo.

sure buddy, you conveniently forgot about the n8?

right

Let's just say that the N8 junk camera is a bit less junk than the iphone junk ;)
But in the end they are both junk.

Yeah I forgot. I was only looking at the Android competitors. My point came up out of a Android vs. iOS discussion in which I needed people to convince that the Desire HD's camera was inferior to the iPhone 4 camera.

HTC sucks at cameras, I'd be looking at the Samsungs and SE's for camera quality.

These posts confirm what I suspected , you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

It's sad how blind some people can be and believe what they are told. Just go click on the eagle picture I posted and take a good look at the color and detail at 100% and ask yourself if you honestly believe the iPhone 4 could ever take a picture that nice.

The annoying thing is because there are millions of people that are just as ignorant/delusional/apathetic Apple has no real reason to ever put in a class leading camera in their next device.

I clicked on the eagle picture... That looks amazing.

Then again you guys sure are missing the point with these phone cameras. They are for emergency "ooh thats interesting, lemme take a pic" moments.

Yes the N8 is better, and like what someone said..it takes a more natural photo than the iphone 4. But people gets so spoiled with their devices sometimes, just because they've put in 12 mp or 5 mp with xenon/led flash think they got the best camera. But forget one thing, its a phone camera!!

If you want good pictures for a party or some planned event...bring a real camera.

If you spend a normal day and see oh wow an eagle, then these phone cameras should be enough.

-sent from my iPod touch 4g. Dont even get me started on the camera for this one.

It seems like you are missing the whole point of moving the ball forward and improving cameras in phones, which Nokia has been doing for a very long time.

The goal is to get to the point where you don't NEED to bring an EXTRA real camera.

Sure I have a Nikon D80, but I don't want to have to take it with me everywhere to get decent photos. I also have a neat little Panasonic Lumix point and shoot, then again I don't want to have to bring that everywhere as well.

Thank you, someone else who gets it

I took my DSLR with me went I went to Japan because I knew it was going to be memorable

But there have been plenty of times when bringing even a point and shoot would be awkward like on a date or just a spontaneous drinking night. Yeah at these times any picture is "good enough" but why settle for crappy pictures when you could capture something better.

That eagle picture is a good example, maybe the guy went for a morning jog with just his phone. Sure a grainy phone pic would be fine, but why settle when you can capture something more memorable.

You believe in miracles, son.
Shooting eagles at bright daylight is nothing like shooting real life images in night clubs with your other half... Just because you managed to buy your dSLR, doesn't mean you also know how to take a picture. And there are p&s cameras out there with better image quality than many entry level/medium priced DSLRs. Notice how I am focusing on small cameras, because it seems that you are not really happy with bulky cameras, meaning DSLRS may not be the best choice for you.

I disagree with your view here.
Nokia took the wrong decision here to take a primary product and try to improve its secondary use which is the camera. By doing so, they now compete camera manufacturers instead of their primary business rivals, and they will never be able to beat them in that area. Nokia really struggles from when it was the pride European company some years back: if you look at its stock, it lost like 75% of its stock value within 5 yrs, while Apple gained I dont know, more than 300%

As for phone-cameras, it never gonna happen. They will never be able to beat a real camera in terms of picture quality.
Phone manufacturers can focus their strengths in making cameras with a lot less IQ but fast, small, compact and able to take decent pics under low light situations. And they will never gonna achieve that by following the Mp wars.
Nokia is wrong, Apple is right, which still has a lot to do.

It's like arguing with a 10 year old, I give up, I'm done with this thread, its already morphed into a different creature
