I just tried on my 3GS with iOS 4 and yep, it does it. I don't lose reception completely but it goes from 5 bars to 1 when i pick it up.

I can not reproduce this problem on my 3G and I'm running iOS4. I will update this when I get my iPhone 4 tomorrow. I'm in Downtown Portland, OR if that helps.

Yes and no. This issue was only reported with the iPhone 4 initially, not when the software was installed on previous generation hardware. It's interesting that no one noticed it, but did notice it on the iPhone 4.

Each operating environment in the video tests is likely to be different. For me to rule out hardware as an issue, both units must have the exact same hardware, or extremely closely-relating.

My theory is this has to do with a certain settings.
For example it could be ANYTHING. anything random like 60% screen brightness, or hell Push turned off.. and brightness on half… or ANYTHING..
and that’s why the results are all Sporadic..
but the important thing to note here is that it’s not JUST the iPhone 4. Which means it can’t be a hardware issue.
Unless someone wants to IMPLY that 3G owners and 3Gs owners have had this problem this WHOLE time and never noticed it until now. which i think is ludacris.
It’s software. and based on settings.
~There, problem figured out. Now lets sit back and watch apple Say what i just said. and tell us what the exact setting/bug is.

What???

So what you're implying is that Everyone with iPhone 3G models and 3Gs models could have had this problem this WHOLE time, but never realized it until now??

Very possible yes. Why? Because nobody was paying attention to it after installing iOS4 on their 3G/3GS...

Yet, right when most people got their new shiny iPhone 4s, they checked the reception because it has a new antenna technology that is supposed to help the reception... Thus noticing it.

I don't have enough iPhones, but even with the exact same (or near enough) settings on my 2G and 3G (4.x), I still can't replicate. It may be a small floating point.

i have a jb 3gs running the old 3.0.1 and old baseband.

i cannot no matter if i hold it left hand, right hand, both hands, shove it up my butt, get 5 bars to go down at all. the signal stays perfect.

this makes me think it could be a software issue, and its more prevalent because of the new hipster anttena on the i4

Just did it on my 3Gs with 4.0 on it, and I can confirm that picking it up and holding will decrease my bars by three.

My 3gs with 3.1.3 is 5 bars lying flat. I pick it up and then it drops 4,3,2,1, searching... Then I lay it down again and it goes back up to 5 bars.

I'm thinking it may have more to do with AT&T upgrades in your area. I tried this with my 3G and my wife's 3GS and nothing happened... If my 4 doesn't do it tomorrow, it'll be a network issue for sure.

Disagree. The video on the home page is from 2008. And I really don't think a phone from 2008 had iOS4. So it is NOT a software problem.

The question if it is a hardware issue, is it a defect in our models or is the design of the phone the problem?

how can you see the signal strength if it's in your butt?..

I see it on my 3GS that does NOT have ios4 or JB. Loose two bars holding it with my thumb near the volume buttons like in the original video. 1 bar if I hold it my normal way.

Some people say it does affect their 3G/S and some say it doesnt. And some say it does affect their iP4's and some say it doesnt. My iP4 is perfectly fine in every way.

I declare a software issue. I feel like people are trying too hard to find problems. Almost like they just want stuff to complain about.

I don't known if this point has been made yet. But a lot of people think that it has to do with the antenna being on the outside and your hand is covering it, and that's what's causing the issue.

However, part of that antenna system is also the WiFi antenna. And I don't know about you guys but I'm not having any issues with wifi, so far.

Yep, this is not a new problem inherent to iPhone 4 or ios4.

Just tested my 3GS running 3.1.3. Laying down it has 5 bars. Pick it up and bars drop to 0. Takes about 30 seconds. Lay it back down, bars go back to 5.

Never noticed this before but elains a lot. So it can't be a software issue.

Note. This guy did a test with a case and the bars stayed the same.

UPDATE Tried two different grips.

1. With a full hand wrap around the back of the phone.

My 3gs with 3.1.3 is 5 bars lying flat. I pick it up and then it drops 4,3,2,1, searching... Then I lay it down again and it goes back up to 5 bars.

2. Just thumb and 4 fingers grip (without palm covering back of phone).

one bar drop...

Full hand wrap drops reception big time!
