I agree with you in a sense. Apple will release the product when they are ready and not on vz or att time. At the same time it should be noted apples track record show as of late that they have no problem taking a seat in the back when it comes to the tech race

What the hell is the basis for this? People keep ignorantly claiming this when the exact opposite has been true for the past two generations.

The iPhone 3GS was bleeding edge techwise when it was released. It had as much or more RAM than any other smartphone in the market at the time, and a better processor than the vast majority of smartphones in the market. In addition, it was the only smartphone in the market that you could get with 32 gbs of storage space installed. And it had the best battery life and performance of any smartphone when it was released too. Benchmark after benchmark proved this. Any slowdown was entirely due to AT&T's network and there wasn't anything Apple could do about that.

The iPhone 4 likewise was bleeding edge techwise when it was released. It had as much or more RAM than any other smartphone in the market at the time, and a better processor than the vast majority of smartphones in the market. Even to this day, there isn't a single phone that can touch the iPhone's resolution. How many other smarphones come with 32gbs of storage space. There wasn't a single smartphone that outperformed the iPhone 4/loaded webpages faster when the iPhone 4 was released. Likewise, there still isn't a smartphone with as good a battery life.

What the hell does Apple have to do to convince you people that they are technology leaders as far as smartphones go? The past two years, they consistently released the fastest, sturdiest, best battery life, best performing smartphone with the most storage in the market. And yet, people still continue repeating the ******** claim that Apple doesn't care about technology, innovation and staying ahead of the pack.

Now finally, after 8 months on the market, dual core phones are finally coming out that outperform the iPhone 4. And the only reason that occured is that Apple updates their products annually, rather than every couple of weeks like Motorola and Samsung prefer to. Given that fact, given that there has been a new iPhone like clockwork every single July, given that just now, finally, the iPhone 4 is starting to fall behind the tech curve in some areas, and dual core CPUs and GPUs are available, it's absolutely ludicrous to suggest that Apple will sit this year out and not do an update this July. And for what, Verizon's sake? Apple is really going to delay updating one of their premier products, a product that they sell internationally, on carriers all over the world, for the sake of one carrier. Fat chance. There WILL be a new iPhone this July. Count on it.

If the iphone 5 were really a world phone why are there indicstions in the ios 4.3 source cod that there will be two models for the iphone 5, and three models for the iphone 4?

I say, model 1 iphone 4 is th current one, model two is the verizon iphone 4 with changed antena positions, model 3 white iphone for gsm with new anena design like in the verizon models.

Concerning the iphone 5, one model for att and one model for verizon. Which also explains why there are two models for the nee ipad, one for verizon, one for att. So in short, there is no evidence for a world cdma/gsm phone right now. Engaget was speculating.

Why didn't they just release the iPhone 5 on both AT&T and verizon at the usual time somehow magestically throwing CDMA and GSM in one chip all at one time versus making an custom iPhone 4 that will be obsolete in months at a completely random time?

4" screen would do it for me. :)

I can see Apple making a 4" in screen for two reasons:

1) It's what appears to be a nice middle ground for a lot of smartphone users.

2) To accommodate a GSM/CDMA chip inside much easier.

Because people that don't want to wait will buy them. Making both Apple and Verizon a boat load of money. Some will sell there Verizon I4 to get the new one as well. It won't be obsolete they are just now taking the 3GS out of the picture. they can sell at a reduced price.

The iPhone 4 will not be obsolete when the iPhone 5 comes out. Verizon will move it to the $99 or $49 iPhone option just like ATT is selling a 3gs for $49 right now.
This is why they are releasing an iPhone 4 mid cycle so when the iPhone 5 comes out they will have that lower price point phone.

Verizon does not want to be stuck with an iPhone 4 at the $199 and $299 price points and ATT has a $199 and $299 iPhone 5. This is why there will be a summer release on both ATT and Verizon for the iPhone5.

Verizon LTE could have changed the game...

Will Verizon's LTE (4G) Network's infrastructure be close to full national launch by February, 10, 2012???...

Just saying, I think the big step for Apple/iPhone is getting all the kinks corrected for the adoption of Verizon's LTE Network.

LTE from Verizon is a game changer... I know it, you know it, Verizon knows it, and so does Apple...

I can see the launch of the iPhone 5 or better yet, iPhone 6 being surrounded by what Verizon's LTE Network is presently doing.

My 2 big guesses...

1) iPhone 5 will be dual GSM/CDMA in July of 2011.

iPhone 6 may be only Verizon LTE in February of 2012... or...

2) iPhone 5 will be here in February or July of 2012 with LTE. (Besides LTE, I say this because the iPhone 4 is/will still be in such high demand, and Apple knows this best, resulting in an new cycle of revisions. Apple is known to always never over-stock any item.)

Both AT&T and Verizon supposedly will have their 4G/LTE networks up and running in 2012. Verizon is promising that it will be ready by February 2012, giving Apple plenty of time to abandon CDMA and test out their new network prior to the iPhone 6's release. Here's how I see this playing out...

June/July 2012 - LTE/4G iPhone 6 announced and released on Verizon and AT&T simultaneously, iPhone 5 reduced to $99 price point, refurbished iPhone 5's sold for $49 or $69, possibly a trade in program for people with an iPhone 5 to upgrade to the iPhone 6, iPhone 4 phased out completely.

June/July 2011 - Dual band GSM/CDMA iPhone 5 (or a seperate but otherwise identical CDMA and GSM iPhone 5) announced and released on Verizon and AT&T simultaneously. iPhone 4 reduced to $99 price point. Refurbished iPhone 4's (purchased by Verizon through the trade in program), sold for $69 or $49.

Thanks to Apple's brand name and the Retina Display, the iPhone 4 and subsequent iPhone versions will always have much higher resale value than other comparable smartphones. Last July, once I got my iPhone 4 for $199, I sold my 3GS unlocked on ebay for $422, and sold my brothers old 3G unlocked on Craigslist for $270. I doubt a 1-2 year old android phone would have fetched anywhere near as much. I made $322 more money selling my 3GS on ebay than I would have if AT&T allowed me to trade in my 3GS to them, and pay $99 to get myself the iPhone 4. Few people realize just how much money their old iPhones command. AT&T and Verizon could and likely will capitalize on this by letting people trade them in, and if nothing else, turning around and reselling them on ebay at a substantial profit.

Cost conscious customers will be able to get their hands on a really awesome refurbished smartphone for a paltry $49/$69 with a two year contract, and that's going to lead to an influx of iPhone adopters. So basically, Verizon will let customers trade in their old iPhone 4 to Verizon, pay $99, $149 or $199, and get their hands on the iPhone 5 with a brand new 2 year contract. Verizon turns around and sells these phones to customers refurbished for $69 with a new two year contract. That $30/$50 in losses they suffer + the cost of refurbishing the phone, will be more than made up for by the 6 month extension that iPhone 4 customers added to their contracts.

If AT&T opts not to move up people's contracts again as they did with past iPhone releases, they would be wise to offer such a similar trade in program. Trade in your iPhone 4, pay $99, sign a new two year contract, and get yourself an iPhone 5. The trade in phones get sold as refurbished units for $49 with a new contract.

Apple has every reason to encourage such an aggressive pricing scheme because it will dramatically increase the sales of their devices. This in turn increases app sales, market penetration, and will help them stay well ahead of Android, BB and Windows Mobile 7 phones. Many people who aren't tech enthusiasts, and thus would never consider paying $199 for a smartphone, even an iPhone, probably wouldn't think twice about paying $49 for one, even if it is refurbished. Unlike, Verizon, AT&T and Apple, many people do not take into account just how much the two year contract renewal is going to cost in the long run. Same applies to young people with limited month to month disposable incomes.

Some of the features that iphone 4 had were already available in the market by other droid models. Iphone 4 did have some specs that were better but for the majority the Iphone 4 did not bring anything new to the table when it was released.

p.s I like iphone :)

Just a thought...

What if everyone is right? What if rather than an iPhone 5 coming out this year, an iPhone 4S comes out. That would support the rumors of faster processor and slightly modified casing that we saw a few weeks ago.

Then in 2012 is when the iPhone 5 would come out that is an all new design and supports the latest 4G tech.

Not sure if I even believe this, but thought I would throw it out there.
