Hell if you can setup the new Apple TV using the iPhone why wouldn't you be able to use it as a remote by reprogramming the remote app?

I seem to remember that the remote app used to be maintained by a single person at Apple. I honestly don't think they ever really cared about it.....and it's clear they didn't even think about it in the design of the new ATV. Have a feeling it's never going to get upgraded.

As for the Netflix interface....blame Netflix for that. This is their design across all devices. Some love it.....I hate it.

I also remember reading that it was developed by a single engineer at Apple. They eventually ended up making it available on the App Store, though it wasn't certain if they are going to provide resources to maintain the application.

However, the dudes blog indicates he is now at Twitter. Hope someone there is going to maintain this.

My bottom line is how did this (ATV4) survive focus group testing and/or use in Apple with no one saying it's impossible to enter a good Apple ID password? Is Apple Infosec dead? Or do they all have a password of 'passw0rd' because they use 2FA?

I'm not joking, setting this up for people in Infosec was like something that escaped a bad beta.

The just released the Apple Watch this year and it seemed that it was a feature they were touting was the remote app on the watch.

I hope you are wrong because typing in my password is a bitch with the new remote. (the remote is awesome, just not for passwords)

Yeah, that was before ATV4 changed everything. :D

Seriously, Tim was talking about using his AW with the ATV3, and it did/does work great with that. Whole thing is incomprehensible.

It was pretty half baked to allow iOS devices to 'set up' the Apple TV seamlessly over bluetooth, but then limit it to just WiFi network details.

I agree that they are probably working on something better than the remote app. At the very least they will have some kind of 'Handoff' feature that allows you to bring up a keyboard on an iOS device when needed.

You pretty much had to set up the ATV before you could use remote app. I found it useful, but hated that I couldn't use it until the ATV was set up.

...
The Remote app was an essential feature and had a fair amount of pluses that the Siri remote lacks.
  • Ability to seamlessly control multiple apple tvs in a home or office. Very useful for when my children lose their remotes. (Very frequent)
  • Easier text input with complex passwords.
  • Siri remote easily broken or lost. Why do I need to worry about another remote?
  • High replacement cost for Siri remote. ($79)
  • Shut off Tvs in different room. (Again, children)
  • Cannot easily tell siri remote position in dark. Have to fiddle. No backlight for buttons.
  • I have to charge the remote
  • Disconnected from the ecosystem.
Without the remote app features, my apple tv feels completely different, in a bad way. It will truly be missed in my house hold. I find the idea of a dedicated remote for Siri pointless. I don’t understand the hype surrounding Siri, Its a feature that is turned off on all of my Apple devices. Its useless to me.

...

One of the reasons I miss in many ATV4 discussions is that without the Remote App I can not easily select and play music for my receiver (music audio system) without turning on the tv. I use the remote App for that.

Sure you can play music with the Music App and use Airplay, but there are a couple (very important) reasons why this is not a solution:
(1) it takes a long time to load a large music iTunes library
(2) my iphone is busy redirecting my music, so I can not leave the house and leave the music on (for other people)
(3) my iphone is busy redirecting my music, so I can not play anything with audio on my iphone
(4) my iphone is busy redirecting my music, so it drains my battery

The Remote App is a great tool as a visual remote to select music fast and easy.
Without that it is practically impossible to use ATV as an easy iTunes audio streamer without using my tv.

There are so many great suggestions in this thread. I wish Apple listens to our feedback and release a new remote app in a really short time. The Apple TV 4 is easily the only Apple device released in recent years that makes me angry.

Im afraid that Apple may have purposely obsoleted the iPhone Remote App in an effort to push the new Siri Remote. As a software engineer, I cannot fathom the idea that Apple spent a year plus designing the new device and somehow managed to not update an app. There are a few reasons that I believe this:
  • No zero day compatibility for a feature that was essential to the previous model.
  • Apples support documents stating that the app is incompatible rather than a notice of impending compatibility via future update.
  • No mention of remote app during product demonstration or release
  • "Prerelease developers" such as Hipster Whale (Crossy Road) built in "controller / remote functionality" to their games rather than relying on a dedicated remote app.
  • This is what apple does.

Ps. Whats up with the horrible netflix interface.

How about controlling the Apple TV with our Apple watches. I can't believe they won't continue support for this after harping on so much about his feature !!

As far as I know there are apps on the iOS App store to turn the iPhone into a bluetooth keyboard. I wonder if it is possible to use this apps to enter text on the Apple TV in case the remote app won't be updated.
I could pair the Apple Keyboard to my Apple TV but is a huge hassle, I don' want to have the keyboard on the couch or next to my TV.
The problem is not just passwords, since I can enter them the very first time via keyboard, but we don't have Siri in my country so every search for movies on the Apple TV would be a real pain.

I doubt it since no keyboards are pairable. It only takes headphones. Each type of BT profile (forget the technical language) is accepted or not and it only accepts headsets, not keyboards.

And the problem really is passwords if you have 40 character upper/lower/special/number autogenerated passwords. :D

Indeed. Tim should stand up and demand his favourite Remote app back!

No, you couldn't. ATV4 doesn't support bluetooth keyboard.

Yeah, I do wonder what he thinks of why he can't use it with ATV4. Whole thing is weird. You would think after all that there would be some sort of AW replacement for it.

Not that that helps the whole password copy/paste issue...

And it's not just about entering passwords. I often search various topic in YouTube using a keyboard (Harmony Smart Keyboard) on my AT3. With the AT4, I can no longer do this. I absolutely HATE the text entry on the new box. A complete step backwards IMO.

Having said that, I'm confident that Apple with rectify this with an update at some point. Where did this rumor come from that Apple is not going to offer any keyboard options? Apple has a history of "dumbing" things down and then re-introducing features again. Final Cut and Airport Utility come to mind.

Other than the keyboard issue, I really like the AT4, especially now that it has the native Plex app. :)

That guy is irrelevant.

That's over 5 years ago. And Remote app has been updated multiple times since then. The article is whining about no retina iPhone 4 update.

It has since gotten that retina treatment, update for tallphone 5, bigphone 6/6s, and iOS7 cosmetics.

I would guess that we're not going to see a new remote app until iOS 9.2. Since the remote app on the Apple Watch is a native app, I believe a watchOS update is needed in order to update the native remote app. I would think they'd want to release the updated iOS and watchOS remote apps at the same time, so we may be waiting for it to be included in iOS 9.2 and watchOS 2.0.2/2.1 - that is, assuming they're released at the same time (I guess they could release watchOS update sooner)
