If this is true, what real improvements have been made over previous generation?

- addition of face time camera
- addition of 0,7mpix rear camera
- bumped up screen resolution
- a tad faster processor

I guess that's about it. Dit I miss something?

-Face time Camera
- 0.7MP Rear camera
- Increased Screen Resolution
-Increased pixel density (The ipod touch 3rd gen has a pixel Density of 163, the new ipod touch 4 has a pixel density of 326)
- Much faster processor (don't be stupid, the A4 is much faster)
- Increased battery life (the 3rd gen had 30 hours of music, the new one has 40 hours)
- Built in Microphone
- It can now use wireless N, the 3rd gen one was 802.11 b/g and the new one is 802.11 b/g/n
- Better speaker (check the ifixit stuff)
- Three-Axis gyro
- Weights less, and is more thin.
- The display is now glued to the glass (which means dust won't go under your glass)
So you idiots can keep saying that the ipod touch 4 is crap, but it's ALOT better than the ipod touch 3rd gen.

Ya... The new iPod really doesn't have many new features...

I think some of you guys are getting a little too spec crazy here. And I think that anyone that decides not to get the new ipod touch because of things like not having an IPS screen, or the camera, or the ram are really going to miss out on an awesome device.

I think that a lot of you will forget about these things once you actually try out the new touch for the first time. If the ipad can make do with 256mb ram, then I'm damn sure that the touch can also. As for the camera, sure the still pics aren't gonna be amazing but it was more for quick shots that you'd upload to facebook or something. I'd be happy as hell that the new touch can take 720p videos that are close to the quality of a stand alone hd video recorder in a much sleeker and thinner package.

And last but not least, the display. Sure the viewing angles won't be as awesome as the iphone 4, but honestly ask yourself how often you'd be viewing it at an angle and not straight on. I also understand that it's not the viewing angles that some are complaining about but the fact that the color quality is on a TN panel is inferior to that of an IPS. But the question is, would you even know the difference in color quality if the two devices weren't side by side? The image quality is still going to be stellar compared to previous generations of the touch.

Sorry about the giant blob of writing, just thought I'd share my thoughts on the matter.

Just to be clear... We are talking about Mp3 player people. Ipod touch is designed to listen to music. That was the primary idea. Mp3 player...
Tell me a mp3 player that vibrates for Video calls? Actually, find me a mp3 player that has not one, but two cameras?

Right... Samsung Epic does. But, that's a phone. Next? Oh... yes. Samsung Galaxy S and Droid X do..
Well, they are phones.

Get over it people. Ipod touch only costs 229 dollars. It's obvious that apple was trying to cut the costs to keep it at 199-299 dollars range. Also, they don't want iPod touch to compete with iPhone 4.

So, since the new one only has 256mb of RAM, is the processor still faster than the 3G one?

Yes. It is the fastest iPod touch to date. It should also be exactly as fast as the iPhone 4. The amount of RAM only dictates how many apps can be running at a time, but not the speed at which those apps run. Hope that makes sense.

I fully understand, I just had it mixed up, I figured it'd be like computer RAM.

Forgive my ignorance, how much RAM the 3rd generation has? I know the processor is different now (faster), but not sure about the RAM amount.

Same amount of RAM, 256mb. I know, this is keeping me on the fence too, if I should upgrade or not.

In my limited testing (the totality of today ;P ), so far I haven't ran into any performance issues originating from the lack of RAM. I'm sure someone will eventually push the limits and show just exactly the extent the ability of the ram provides.

I know this may smell like fanboyism, but I pretty much trust that Apple has determined that a RAM upgrade was not needed for this 4th gen. I mean, they really are pushing the "gaming platform" thing pretty hard, IMO stretching at times. So if this 256MB RAM limit was going to hinder the gaming app market, I think they would have stuffed the 512MB in here no problem.

The iPhone 4 has a lot more data to keep track of, like GPS, voice traffic, data traffic. I don't know the technicals behind these things or how RAM intensive they are, but certainly they must add a load onto everything else the iPhone 4 does.

I think this certainly shouldn't be a deal breaker for anyone unless people start demonstrating that performance is hindered in some way, or insufficient to run certain apps. Bar that, who cares?

People need to realise that the iPhone 4 remains Apple's "premium" iOS device.

iPod touch fans need to calm down. You got the Retina Display (albeit not IPS), the A4 chip, front facing camera & FaceTime, and HD video recording.

That's a hell of a lot of iPhone 4 features, but the iPod touch will always be the iPhones poor relation on purpose. No GPS, no 3G, half the RAM, lower resolution still photos, no IPS.

Given what you DID get compared to what you didn't, iPod touch fans have done well from this update, yet some are moaning over on iPod touch Fans forums about no GPS or 3G!

Come on ...
C'mon is right. You can't blame people here. It's the marketing, blogs, and word of mouth, especially from Apple and people who have had the touch in the past.

By and large, the vast majority of people who are interested in the touch believe it is indeed a "premium" device because Apple wouldn 't sell anything but premium products, yes?

If the reviews (which are just now starting to come out) focus on the vast differences and really emphasize the itouch is NOT a premium device, people's perception will likely change and for the most part, they won't have such high expectations.....just my 1/2 cents.

Have people actually have gaming performance issues on the older iPod Touches? I've been gaming a WHOLE lot on my 2nd gen with the likes of Rolando, Driver, GTA, Nova, Tony Hawk, etc and the ONLY game i've ever had slight slowdowns was in Zombie Infection (Gameloft's Resident Evil 5 clone). Other than that, the 256 ram hardly seems like something to scream about, really.

Is there no chance that the 32 or 64 gb has increased ram to 512.
I have ordered a 32 which is due next week, but no way am I breaking open like www.ifixit.com did.

I was wondering the same exact thing due to the fact that they only showed the 8GB but i promise you im not doing that to my ipod. im a highschool student and i spent my own money on it, parents didnt give me a dime and im not screwing with it. My guess is most likely not, but we will see

Does anyone know how much faster the new processor is compared to one in touch 3rd? I've heard somewhere it's a minimal difference, I'd like to confirm this.

The new iPod touch started out as just like iPhone 4, and then got worse and worse.

Worse? How is two cameras, an upgraded processor, and upgraded screen worse?? True, it isn't the best upgrade to their line. The 256MB RAM on the 3G ran pretty good. I am glad I got the iphone 4, although for someone who had an ipod touch 1G that was broken (mostly), this was a DREAM update (considering that mine didn't even have speakers). Learn to appreciate what you have.
