Another great find, arn! It's all coming together.

More Apple media hype. Readers should be aware that this sudden resurgence in Tablet rumors, accompanied by very detailed information that was completely unknown/untalked about until a few days ago, is all being done by Apple.

They know the iPhone success is partially due to the ridiculous hype they created around it. They also know how anticipated the Tablet is by certain demographics, so they have started their underground campaign to build hype. It will run for a month (so predictable) until we see it in glory on Jan 26th.

Nothing more Nothing less

I don't hink it will be a tablet at all, at least not in the sense as we know, it, like for drawing and stylusses and stuff, i think it will be a pure media/gaming device nothing more and nothing less.

But i'm still hoping that Apple will surprise us all with some funtionality that none of us have thought about.

If it is good in terms of gaming/media and pdf reading it will be exactly what I want. If it doesn't have full OS X then it better be < 500.

I hope this alleged tablet never come out, Tablet computers suck.

I'm confident apple will only release a tablet if it DOESNT suck. That's why we haven't seen one from them until now (maybe).

Anyway, mp3 players and smartphones sucked until apple came out with theirs. They'll do the same with their tablet if/when it's released.

I seem to recall a MacRumors member that had a prototype tablet based on a PowerBook Duo, its funny how Apple bounced around with running Mac OS and Newton os on prototype tablets and now its Mac OS X and iPhone OS

It will 'suck' to be sure ... it will suck the oxygen out of the room for a lot of Apple's competitors and some probably don't even know they are yet either! IMHO it will be a massive success and game changer for several industries not just computing as such, not least of which will be the Print and TV industries.

From what I understand, this device is speculated to be primarily for multimedia, web, mail, games.

This makes names like iSlate and iPad seem like misnomers...unless we'll have chalk, pen, or stylus input.

My left elbow tells me that a mac prefix is more likely than an i prefix and that neither prefix may be more likely still.

I think it should be call the "MacBook Touch". To me this fits with the macbook, macbook pro, and the macbook air. We all want a computer that runs OS X not an ipod so we should make it sound like a mac.

I cant wait for all the threads about it........

there will be the,

"Should i wait for the next revision because i think it will be upgraded or should i buy it now?"

(if there are multiple models) "which islate model would suit me best"

lol

iSlate just doesn't roll off the tongue. We need to name it for them.
My entry - iTab

And have a picture of Saint Steve in the ads descending Mt. Sinai with the iTab nestled lovingly in the crook of his sleek and thin arms.
On the iTab is inscribed the top ten list of the cool, hip, smug, thin, sleek, amazing, great and easy to do things you can do with the iTab.
Buy the iTab and achieve Apple geek nirvana. Ommmmmmmmm. No, wait, wrong religion...:D

iSlate will be the name. The evidence is overwhelming.

That's funny. In another thread people were arguing it would be iSlate because apple would never reuse a name like iBook or newton.

i would still prefer it to be simply called "slate" and get rid of the i. it is so last decade! :D

since "slate" is what trademark lawyers call "descriptive," apple would have to put up with Dell Slates and Acer Slates.

Remember how people howled when they announced "Macbook" and "Macbook Pro" as new names?

Remember how everyone said they were horrible? I don't know about you, but they seem perfectly normal to me now.

So I don't put much stock in the argument that "iSlate" sounds weird. That's never stopped Apple before and, honestly, whatever they come up with always sounds "normal" within a month or two anyway.

Steve's original name for the first PowerBook 100 was MacBook.

I think MacSlate would sound better.

This is exactly what I was thinking, but then that would mean it has to run full Mac OS X, which would be awesome.

I think it should be call the "MacBook Touch". To me this fits with the macbook, macbook pro, and the macbook air. We all want a computer that runs OS X not an ipod so we should make it sound like a mac.

If they did that then it would have to be some sort of convertible laptop, from all the rumors so far it doesn't sound like this will have any 'Book' qualities, it will just be flat like a slate.

iTouch!

That's how I would name it.

And talking of OSX vs. iPhone-OS:
The iPhone RUNS OSX(!) just without Aqua on top - instead it runs Multitouch.

One thing is for sure...

...with all the hype and press within and outside of the Apple community, if they don't have one of these coming out soon, they better get working on one right now. The market certainly seems to be there. If I remember right, Jobs said that they were not going sell a tablet because the market wasn't there. He also mentioned that the technology was not yet available. Looks like both of those requirements have been met. (Sorry for a lack of references, but those statements are on this site somewhere.)

iTouch, that wouldnt be bad if that wasnt how people refer to the iPod Touch.
I know you know that but it drives me CRAZY when people call it that.

And yes the iPhone OS IS Mac OS X but it cannot be ported, not emulated to the desktop just as Mac OS X "desktop" cannot be ported to the iPhone, making them separate operating systems.

At first, maybe. But once it gains secondary meaning... remember "Macintosh" is something you get in the produce department, but it now has a secondary meaning of the Apple computer.

Plus, I'm not sure it really is descriptive. It's not really a slate. It's arguable. If you think slate is a synonym for any firm like pad like thing that you "write" on, then I guess.

Anyway, I hope it's cool ... and a little bigger than what's being rumored.

True, but no chance of it obtaining secondary meaning right away - certainly competitors would react much faster than that (particularly chinese knock-off artists).

As for whether it is descriptive, I think so. It certainly isn't arbitrary. NY Times called it "Apple's Slate" and presumably they were unaware of the real product name (Apple isn't going to share that with anyone until they announce it). The form factor is typically called a slate. For example:
