The iPhone RUNS OSX(!) just without Aqua on top - instead it runs Multitouch.

iPhone OS X =! Mac OS X
Same thing as with the Apple TV.

While they are built around the same core OS X, they are different OSes and run different apps.

PenMac days

Even with news that Apple has registered the iSlate trademark, we can't be certain that's the name the company will ultimately use. Of historic interest, however, is the fact that this is not the first time they used the "Slate" term in labeling one of their tablet projects. In the early 1990s, Apple had an unreleased tablet prototype called the "MessageSlate" based on the Newton technology.

The MessageSlate never went into production. Apple even applied for trademark protection for the MessageSlate name back in 1993.

Article Link: The 'iSlate' - Reviving an Old Name?

If you want to go this far back, then yes it may be a revival of an old 90s term. Back in those days, one of the biggest buzzes around Cupertino was a project called the "PenMac" with some even wearing t-shirts and polo shirts with the projects logo on it. The PenMac project was canceled around the time of the introduction of the Newton. To this day, PenMac t-shirts and such are some of the most hightly sought after Apple promotional items out there. Better, there are a few very highly valued PenMac prototypes out there in the wild.

Try to say it five times fast:

MessageSlate - MessageSlate - MessageSlate - MessageSlate - MessageSlate

Tongue-tied? Doubt it will "break" the "i-" prefix methodology of other gadgets.

Remember how people howled when they announced "Macbook" and "Macbook Pro" as new names?

Remember how everyone said they were horrible? I don't know about you, but they seem perfectly normal to me now.

So I don't put much stock in the argument that "iSlate" sounds weird. That's never stopped Apple before and, honestly, whatever they come up with always sounds "normal" within a month or two anyway.

I never complained about the MacBook moniker, it sounded OK to me. However, I still think "MacBook Air" is absolutely stupid. "iSlate" is, somehow, worse sounding then that.

I've been thinking about the probable name for this tablet. iSlate will just lead to "Is late" jokes. "Slate" doesn't seem Apple-ish. How about "MacSlate" :D

I'm don't know much about material science but what if Apple actually used slate as the material for the back of the device? You know, instead of plas… erh polycarbonate or aluminum. Would propably look awesome.

....and break very easily!

a Mac

It won't be January and it will be called "Is late".

Many years ago a DEC minicomputer necessary for a project of mine was somewhat late in arriving, when it finally did so I gave it the network name "Godot", I commend this name to My Jobs.

That's funny, I always thought of the "Get a Mac" ads as being somewhat inspired by that play...

I think "Tablet" sounds a lot better than "iSlate." iSlate just sounds lame to me. Tablet sounds logical.

At least it's not iCantBelieveItsNotBetter. That would be a long name.

Maybe its Isolate,its kinda close.

Islate does not sound like normal Apple innovation, but then again maybe the name is to get maximum media attention.

It will be none of those - the domain reg is a diversionary tactic. I believe the name will be smoething unexpected. My choice would be "Contact", primarily (for me) to honor Carl Sagan, but also because of the numerous levels such a name would work on. Obviously, that will not be it either.

And have a picture of Saint Steve in the ads descending Mt. Sinai with the iTab nestled lovingly in the crook of his sleek and thin arms. On the iTab is inscribed the top ten list of the cool, hip, smug, thin, sleek, amazing, great and easy to do things you can do with the iTab. Buy the iTab and achieve Apple geek nirvana. Ommmmmmmmm. No, wait, wrong religion...:D

Brilliant! :D

Apple MessageSlate prototype - 1990s

Evolution of Apple sure is great, isn't it? :)

I sure hope the Apple Tablet ends up being [almost] as thin as an iPod Touch, and
as light as the MacBook Air (a possible evolution from the MacBook Air).

BEST PART: How about tethering to your iPhone's internet connection???? :D

The Tablet should not be an iPhone OS or a computer; it should run BOTH operating systems!

I think Steve Jobs should play a huge prank on the public and pull the old 1990s Newton out and introduce it as the new Tablet, and say "It's only one inch thick, it only weighs five pounds, and it has 25 different colors in addition to just green! It will be available in a few months." Then walk off stage still being totally serious as the audience starts to wonder if he was serious. Move to the next announcer as the audience thinks that's really it. Then Steve comes out later and says "haha. just kidding...." :D

Maaan, I swore that I'd never buy another Apple product after he discontinued the Newton - which I loved and used daily. Oh well, here we are now.... :)

iSlate just doesn't roll off the tongue. We need to name it for them.
My entry - iTab

It'll roll off the tongue after a while. I remember when a lot of people here (myself included) complained that "Macbook" doesn't roll off the tongue, but now it sounds just fine.

It doesn't sound likely, but I still hope this thing can double as a professional drawing tablet so I can ditch my Cintiq. So far there just hasn't been a tablet solution (Mac or PC) that I've taken to, and my 12" Cintiq isn't really all that portable. That's probably the only thing that could get me to buy it.

iSlate sounds a little bit harsh.

iPanel or something more melodic sounding would be better for cool design.

Especially the long a-a-a creaks and croaks.

But, what the heck: if the tablet is great, you can call it almost anything.

PS:even iTablet sounds better. Or MacTab.

Speaking of reviving an old name...

You're all wrong!

It will be called the iWalk :p

i can tell you one thing, it ain't going to fold open. a keyboard might slide out but most likely, it will be one solid piece and look similar to the iphone.

The name they should revive is "Newton"!

Well, since Jobs was the one who shut the Newton down, your suggestion is slightly unlikely.

Though it would really be cool to see another Newton product. Still, there are some negative market sentiments associated with that name. It ain't gonna happen.

This is not true, the iWalk is the "breakthrough" device that we're waiting for!

Nah... Seriously for those who are too young to remember, the iWalk dates back to 2001. There was this rumor about some kind of revolutionary PDA that Apple was about to release, right around the time than the 1st iPod was unveiled. This rumor (some would call it a hoax) along with the screenshots and videos were fabricated by the defunct Spymac.com rumor site.
