1) It looks disgusting, i'd be embarassed to use something like that in public, that design was in style for Windows 3.1
Hey! Maybe it DOES run Windows 3.1! :D
13) The Macbook Pro has a Magsafe Power Connection because it would be really bad if someone tripped over your cable and dragged your whole laptop onto the floor, which has happened to me at work more than once, however this, does not.
They don't need a MagSafe with this. They used a different approach. With the size and weight of this thing, tripping on the power cable will either break your leg or rip the socket out of the wall, but the laptop ain't movin'! :D
14) The Macbook Pro has an external battery monitor, so you can see how full your battery is without turning your computer on, and this doesn't.
That's only because this thing runs on 3 car batteries, that last 8-10 minutes! :D

Seriously, this is one of the silliest laptops (no, won't fit on a lap!)... notebook (no, notebooks are much smaller)... portable (well, not really!)... compact mainframe? computers I've ever seen! Makes a Mac Pro look like a MacBook Air!

My eyes! They burn!!!!

How much does the medical costs add up to when u have to lug that thing around?:p

So is the thread going to be retitled at some point?

I think "The laptop we hope to god the MBP will never be" is suitable.

Yeah that's in a different league...

of phone books! That is hideous! I don't care if it's made by aliens and has a million core processor (it would be able to fit in that suitcase for sure)!

4) The CPU is far slower than the one in the MBP, its only got a 2.1Ghz clock speed, ok so its quad core, that means nothing unless your using Multi Core apps, and a Multi Core O/S which oh let me think hardly exist!! So basically its going to run hotter, slowing you down even more to about 1.8Ghz and waste your energy bill doing...nothing.
People should do their homework before jumping into bed with Quad Core, the future is Mobile i7 which is Dual Core, not some stupid archaic Penryn design.

5) This laptop is far more expensive than the Macbook Pro, it starts at $3999 and thats without any extras, where as the Macbook Pro starts at $1999, yes thats $2000 cheaper!! You could get 2 Macbook Pros for 1 of these!

To be fair you should compare it to the 17" MBP. If you downgrade to a 2.5 Ghz processor it's $750 cheaper. Still ~$500 more then a 17" MBP but not exactly twice the cost.

8) The Macbook Pro has an iSight camera which is useful for business meetings among other things, this does not.

The site says it has a 2 MP webcam. Bit better then the .3 MP iSight built into my MBP.

12) The Macbook Pro has a firewire 800 port, which is useful for real professionals, this does not.

I think it's actually quite the opposite. The new MBP may have FW-800 but apparently the chipset is no good for audio capture, which is what this laptop was designed for.

Now I'm not an audio guy, so obviously this laptop isn't for me, but I can appreciate it for what it is. I don't think it is supposed to compete with the MBP so what's the point to criticizing it for not being a MBP. For every point you brought up I'm sure there's a counter point for why this laptop would be better then a MBP for it's intended audience.

And to everyone saying how huge it is, yes, it's thick and ugly, but it's not particularly heavy... only 8lbs. That's only a 1.5 pounds more then my MBP. Definitely more portable then carrying around an imac.

Personally, I think this one looks more interesting! (one of the first I ever used!) :D

IBM370.jpg

At least it doesn't pretend to be portable!

Im sure you meant 1.3 MP.....

No, I meant to say .3 MP, but having done a bit of research it looks like I might be wrong. I just assumed the isight's resolution was 640x480 (.3 MP) since that's the maximum resolution that photobooth or imovie can capture with it. Apparently it's actually capable of 1.3 MP but apple's built in applications don't take advantage of that. Strange.

Regardless, it's less then 2 MP, and that other laptop has a webcam, so my point still stands. And now I'm slightly annoyed at apple that I can't use my isight to it's full potential.

The fact that the Sager offers an external floppy drive really surprises me. Considering that Apple got rid of floppies over 10 years ago (at least with iMacs), that's ridiculous. I can't imagine how many people would still look have a need for it that would be purchasing that computer...

No way, never.

It's powerful, but the only way you could accommodate such powerful hardware into a laptop is by making it insanely huge. If you wanted these kind of specs in a MBP, the smallest MBP would probably be at least 17", twice as thick, much heavier and a lot hotter.

However I wouldn't mind if the MBP gets refreshed with a P8800/P9700 and an ATI Mobility 4670. :)

floppy's are pretty much gone across the board

I love how you are all bashing the point about it being heavy, since as pointed out earlier, its only a pound a half heavier than the mbp, which is actually kind of impressive looking at that thing. regardless though, you'd have to be pretty damn weak for that much of a weight change to make a difference (looks at all the people who thought the mba was a good idea...)

When dealing with weightage of as little as 10 lbs or so, every pound is ALOT percentage wise.

The Dell Precision M6400 is everything the 17" MBP should have been...... Even though I really like the new 17".

That is absolute BS! Looking at the size of that laptop, I'd be surprised if it went anywhere if someone tripped over the cord...

:D

Thats the same thing as an alienware m9750 without the alienware "cladding." Probably has a different motherboard than the alienware unit too, to support the quad-core cpus. The shells are made by Arima. (Similar to Clevo, which makes laptops for Sager, Alienware, and others) And yes... these things are boat anchors. I've held one and they are heavy as hell :)

...laptops are supposed to be portable, it makes me laugh when anyone wants to use a 15 - 17 inch anything as a portable computer...especially when they're on an air plane and the person in front reclines their seat so they can't open up the laptop...
