Member "rank" isn't always a good indicator of their contribution to the site (or lack thereof). There are many newbies that make great comments and add much to the site when they do post, and there are a few "higher" ranked individuals who don't.

Amen to that. The guy that started the Core Image FAQ should have been given special status IMO...

I am not a very prolific member, but I do read the discussions a few times a week.
The forums are here for people to participate. I think the post count and status are like a small "reward" for those who contribute to the community, and those of us who just read the forums aren't really contributing to it.

One of the great things about this forum, is that even if you are a noob, and only have a couple of posts, even the most senior members still respect what you have to say.

And to be honest, there are members like you that keep the likes of me coming back. For you showed compassion and interest in helping a fellow MR member out with your kind words and suggestions, and offers of help.

Going a bit OT here. One of the photo sites that I go to, has a "hero" level. These are people that have contributed to the development of the site in some way. In your case you are a Demi-God already. But the kindness and effort that you gave to me in my personal time of need deserves your status to be elevated to Hero.

It's just another forum and it's a complete riot in there. Honestly, the fun we have!

No, to be honest it's fairly quiet.

And yes, it's just for demis/contributors.

Damn you! I have had money for MR for maybe like 6 to 9 months!

These are not empty promises of money. I have a PayPal account ready.

{edit: Oops, better be careful here. The Posting Count Police may come after me again :) )

And then there are those who pad their stats via non-Mac topics a la NCAA Basketball threads. :D Haven't seen that front and center recently, especially with the whole Pittsnoggle...

I think it is best not to force the avatar issue. It will come in time and hopefully via insightful postings. I read the forum for almost a year before my first post.

And then there are those of of us that noticed the weight given to postings stats (by some), that have tried to modify their posting behavior, in such away that "fluff" posts did not out weigh our other posts.

Don't get me started on those morons. Sheesh. You'd think they'd have better things to do than talk sports on a nice geek forum like this.

But what's this about Pittsnoggle? ;) :p

I think that some of the community threads are great. It is a good chance to get to know fellow members outside of the context of just "mac stuff." While you certianly don't want to post exclusively in those forums, I enjoy seeing who the other MR kids are cheering for during March Madness! :D

Sorry, sarcasm doesn't travel well here. I started that thread, and posted almost annoyingly often in it... ;) :D

Maybe I'm not following you here. Are any posts weighted or has it just been tossed around?

you'll never care less about postcount than the day you stop posting here. in the end count doesn't matter, just have fun with all the chatter... some informative, some nonsense, a lot in between...that's the point of a messageboard :)

Ah, should have known. I have a hard enough time picking up sarcasm in the real world, let alone in text! ;) Anyways, I enjoyed your thread! Now we are going to have to keep an eye on the playoffs. Cheers! :D

omg, that's all sorts of funny...the icing on the cake is Blues response to their response a few posts down :D *chuckle* ;)

Wow, that is the first time I have read that tread. That is a classic. ;)

I think this whole thing has been visited enough times, though. In the end, the only "concrete" way to base membership is on posts. Unfortunately, we can't base it on value of said posts, only quantity (excepting, of course, those that are Wastelanded or in the Political forum).
Pity we couldn't implement a whuffie system (see Cory Doctorow's "Down and out in the Magical Kingdom). Well written and informative posts (like mine) would gain more whuffie from those who read them than "whoo hoo, first post!" - not that I remember ever seeing that here.

Honestly, this thread should have died once the numbers were posted, but no, it had to degenerate into an off-topic mess... ;)

Anyway, some of the reasons I come here include helping others with their Mac problems and commenting on the various rumors and news articles that get posted. I'm not overly concerned about my post count, but I track it anyway because it's fun to do so. I also track my activity level (average posts per day - look at my profile) just because I enjoy doing it.

I think a good measure of Macrumordom isn't how high your post count is, but how much time you spend on this site. Your post count should be a secondary statistic, IMO.

Research shows that MacRumors post count is directly proportional to your worth as a human being, and when humankind finally destroys the ecosystem the members with the highest post counts will be selected as the few to travel to Mars to start over again, with thousands of clones of each of them. I read all this in a reputable article that I bought at a supermarket checkout stand, by the way.

I use camino and don't see a spell check option.

And thank god i am not a 601. Imagine the time required to reach that.

It goes MUCH faster if you're averaging over 6 posts per day and often posting more than that. I've posted 50 (!) times in one day on these forums twice since I registered.

:D You're not confusing this with Ark B in the Hitchhiker's Guide?

Inspector Lee, I think that what Chip was trying to say was that many regulars with an eye to respecting the post-status try to make sure that we have at least as many sensible, helpful, Mac-related posts as silly, off-the-wall, completely absurd silly ones. :p

It is much more fun this way! Looking back this thread has really covered a range of topics, it kind of amazing.

I love Doctor Q's relation of post count to worth as a human being. Sums it up perfectly! ;) :D

What i meant was that I found myself drawn to the fluff threads, and that was driving my post counts. But I now try and temper those posts by trying to post equally to the hardware/software sides now.

I'm the exact opposite of you in that regard. I don't post to the community threads very often. Most of my posts have been in the News, Hardware, and Software forums.
