Creating a store-within-a-store has been tried many, many times by many, many different vendors with many different retailers.
Dell, Gateway, Apple, CompUSA, Best Buy, Staples, Office Max, etc. have all tried their hand at this.
I might date myself...
But I remember back in the early-mid 1980's when Macy's had a computer department that sold Apple and IBM branded systems (with HUGE amounts of channel support from Apple and IBM)... back when the price points where $5K+ for a basic, fully-configured standalone system.
I always thought Best Buy didn't pay employees on commission, but maybe that's changed recently.
Either way, Apple's own stores have been SO outrageously successful, I'm surprised they even feel the need to be other places like Best Buy where they give up SO much control.
I'll have to keep my ears open next time I'm in our local Best Buy. If I remember correctly, was it Best Buy or Circuit City who last year laid off most of their top-earning employees?
