it does not make a blind bit of difference if Google were to get together the best designers in the world to design their mobile phones and their watch because Apple fans will always talk negatvely about Google devices and rubbish them because they are not Apple.
Apple fanboys talk trash about Google and Google fanboys talk trash about Apple. It's just the way of tribalism.

While the bezels do seem large, I wonder if in use do they come across as bezels or just unused screen space, like if you use a circular aW face without corner complications.

Google shot themselves in foot by not using Google Fit as a main app for Pixels. Instead you buy Pixel Watch and have to use another app (Fitbit app) and after 6 months pay a subscription to fully use it.
Total joke compared to AW "
As oppose to Apple Fitness+ where you have to subscribe after 3 months?!🤣

If it integrates well with the Pixel Phone, and the other Google services then it's a win for Google fans. I tried the Samsung S20 Note Ultra, and at that time the Samsung S3 watch to see how it compared to Apple. It was just too clunky and wasn't as refined or as easy as it's Apple's counterparts.

Nothing labeled “Pixel” will ever “beat” Apple because most consumers are too smart to trust Google’s hardware division to support anything longer than 2 years. We don’t need to relitigate this every fall ad nauseum. Google hardware and software is crap.
But when so many people upgrade their smartwatches every 1-2 years, does that really matter?

Why does Google (or anyone else) have to beat Apple (or another company)? As long as a company offers a solid product that people want and buy, that's enough to keep other companies on their toes to try to improve and innovate.

That's how we got the Apple Watch Ultra. People (i.e. serious athletes) were buying Garmin watches like the Fenix because the regular Apple Watch didn't offer what Garmin had.
Agree.

I think Google quite obviously aren't going for something that's supposed to beat Apple Watch.

It's much more about creating something that is distinctly different from any other smart watch in both aesthetics and features.

A lot of consumers have been begging for a completely circular smart watch ever since the first Apple Watch came out.

And while I don't love every part of the Pixel Watch design, I must say it's the most elegant out of all circular smart watches I've seen to date.

I'm assuming the design and small size doesn't lend itself to a lot of sensors or great specs.

But hey, this is a step in a new direction and I think it could be something really great if they stick to it for a couple of years.

Definitely.

A smart watch is only as good as it's hardware and software integration.

I'm worried Google thinks the hardware is enough to make Pixel Watch a success. But we'll see.

$80 a year for advanced fitness features? No thanks.
I know it does more than Apple offers, but at least Apple gives you all their fitness stuff for the purchase of the watch.

I wish they will do. It could be the biggest kick of motivation for Apple for trying even harder. Competition is healthy.
This! Apple has never been as complacent as this year.

It's hard to blame them when the competition is so weak.

But I really hope Google steps up and puts some effort into the Pixel Watch and sticks to improving the hardware with new, annual Watch releases.

The Pixel watch has a terrible design. Massive bezels under bulbous glass… just awful. That glass won’t hold up to much - smack your wrist on something and that glass will likely shatter with ease

Can Google Finally Beat Apple With Pixel Watch?

No. But notice the first reference, "The Pixel Watch features a striking round design.” All some competitor has to have is some design or feature the Apple product doesn’t have and the chase is on. Rectangle vs Round has been the rallying cry since day one as to why the Apple Watch is eventually doomed. You don't even have to listen to this podcast to know that.

Not sure why round faces get such push back. A lot of people like them, WearOS was designed to accommodate both styles, and if you primarily use your watch with round face optimized apps its really not a big deal.

IMO, it feels a bit too dainty looking and won't appeal to a large majority of the population.

The AW is somewhat more flexible where it can look elegant but also sporty. With the Ultra, there's now a rugged look added to the lineup.
I wear a 38mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual. It is not "dainty" for my wrist size, it is a classic vintage, timeless size.

round screens for UI is just hard, not saying impossible but you have to change up the general way people interact with information. information layout favors squares

Human language and perception favor squares. We see a big rectangle. Writing is designed to be written in lines and square blocks. Unless a screen is so large the edges don't matter, round just doesn't work.

The only reason clocks are round is because of sundials. It makes sense, but as soon as you want to put more than a very small amount of text basically dead center, it's not a good design anymore.

Apple did the right thing by offering a round clock and letting you use the rectangle edges. If you aren't using a round clock, everything else is laid out properly.

Google has been in love with whitespace for like a decade for some reason, so they see nothing wrong with giving you a teeny amount of text and wasting all the other space.
