they cant use the M3 chip in new iPads. M1 M2 M3 ALL have a major security flaw that cant be fixed with software.

GoFetch is an unfortunate flaw, but it’s real-world impact is questionable as it’s very difficult to actually exploit it.

It affects Intel’s 13th and 14th generation “raptor lake” processors too, not just Apple Silicon. And the sky doesn’t seem to be falling over at Intel either.

Also, if the M4 is coming out in a few days, it’s not clear that GoFetch will even be fixed considering it was only discovered a couple of months ago. It will take much longer than that to re-design a significant part of the CPU’s memory architecture and get it into production.

I’m ok with the AI stuff if Apple can do the following things that EVERYONE else failed at:

1) Make it smarter than current Gen AI. I’ve yet to see a LLM that actually performs well enough for prime time use. Every one is riddled with errors and hallucinations. It’s hilarious that some professionals try to rely on it (to their own detriment). Lawyers submitting AI-generated briefs that have made up case law… it’s insane.

2) Make it privacy-focused and on device. Every other service mainly relies on the cloud. Let’s stop that. Also, let’s make sure nobody can ever access what my AI does.

3) Actually perform useful actions. Talking to me and parsing data is fine, when it works, but a good assistant can also do things. Perform actions within other apps etc. Until we have that, AI will remain a toy.

I'll change the iPad because I still have the M1 model and ultimately the battery doesn't last long, but an M4 seems a bit wasted to me with iPadOs without dual boot.
Furthermore: if they activated dual boot I would order the 13", otherwise the 11". What a mess.
It’s only a waste with the current iPadOS. Let’s see what June brings in terms of iPadOS 18

People dont want to buy chips with a major design flaw built into them.

This is why they are moving on and using the M4. They can redesign this chip to fix the major flaw.
Overdramatic much? Every single processor in every device on the planet has security flaws.

If it makes sense for Apple to release iPad Pro with M4 right now, then that means Apple won’t do it. It’ll most likely be the predictable scenario of M3 iPad Pro and M2 iPad Air. I’d love to be surprised, though.

I pick up my iPad mini more than any other iPad I have.

It's the ultimate consumption device... eReader, Streamer, Note Talking, Web browsing. and it doesnt make your arms ache when holding a long time.

Larger iPads are just too heavy for using this way... the larger screen is nice but unless you're propping it up on something... you can hold them long.

iPads have use cases... especially artists etc... but for most people iPhones and iPad mini are great consumption devices on the go.
This. The iPad mini is criminally underrated - it's a brilliant on-the-go consumption device. I really hope they'll give it some love - an OLED display in particular.

Lots of petulant "If Apple does <X> I'm moving to Canada" type comments...

Amazing how we get these threats three times a year, and yet the SAME PEOPLE still keep showing up in the forums...

You do know that this "major security flaw" is
- not nearly the big deal you seem think it is. It doesn't affect anything happening at supervisor or hypervisor level, and if an app is rolling their own crypto at user level, well, they deserve whatever they get

- easily fixed (IF Apple thinks its worth doing, which I doubt) by flipping a particular bit in a control register

But sure, feel free to run around spreading hysteria.

They can. MBAs with M3 were released a few weeks ago.

Apple releasing a new ipad with OLED and M4? That would be wild. But Apple would be missing out on a chance to double dip.
It will come with M4 but not now. For sure they will double dip. OLED + pencil + M3 + small AI now, M4 + more small AI later.

That would disable the problematic chip functionality (Data memory-dependent prefetching), which is an important performance optimisation.

The flaw would have to be pretty serious and being actively exploited for Apple to want to significantly reduce the performance of every Apple Silicon device!

I can imagine that would expose Apple to class action lawsuits etc (“I bought this MacBook because it promised a certain level of performance, now you made it 25% slower!”)

Forget dual boot, just being able to switch users on iPadOS would be a dream come true.
Yeah dual boot is rather pointless IMHO,
But multiuser accounts, better Multitasking and better file management (eg same as macOS) are what I wish for. But these wishes are all software related, not hardware.
i just had to give up my work M2 IPP. It will be a same day buy for me, regardless of SOC. The SOC isn’t the limiting factor.

If Apple would force people to upgrade all their gear to M4 just to use their AI cook-up, they might as well wave good-bye to their shares.
Current iPads already have neural engines, you want Siri to be faster? Is it slow now? More privacy?

The article made it sound like the major selling point of an M4 chip would be its advanced AI capabilities. Similar things were said about the upcoming A18 chips for iPhones. If so, where would it leave people with their existing pre-M4 and pre-A18 devices?
