Seriously, My 6 year old TiBook didn't even look like that.

Well when the cup fell it startled me and I knocked over some other stuff on the table and that's why it is that dirty. There was a full ashtray next to it that got bumped so all the crap you see on it is likely to be ash. I knew that photo would get such comments lol. I thought about washing it before posting a pic but meh I am too lazy.

You wouldn't want to see what my Macs look like when it is rainy season in the jungle and they have moths crawling all over them because we have no insect screens where I stay. The bugs love those bright screens. It is like a horror movie, "The Swarm" coming to a MBP near you.

For you people that can't stand people even touching your screen I challenge you to deal with Lao children swatting moths on your screen. Moth guts don't come off easy either. On the bright side the ants come the next day to feast on the moths.

Anybody want to lend me their MBP while I am getting mine repaired? I will treat it as well as I treat my own I promise.

Anyway I am taking it in this weekend and will report back on the price of repair. I am sure people are curious to find out what it will cost.

it will only be a matter of time before companies starts making screen protectors for the MBP trackpad.....unless they're already out.:p

I tried my iPhone screen protector but it doesn't seem to stick the same as it does to my iPhone. If it is too expensive and I am unwilling to pay the price, if it begins to crack I will try clear cellophane packing tape. A track pad protector is a great idea.

The cup didn't hit the pad all that hard but it hit it just right. sometimes the impact doesn't have to be that great to shatter something. I would wager if it had a thin plastic coating on it that the cup would have maybe just bounced off. That's just a guess of course.

It is mostly a matter of luck. My iPhone fell down from about a meter high on a tile floor and it just had a minor scratch. But I've heard other people drop it from half that and have the screen crack.

Sorry for your accident though. I know how annoying that is.

I'd be careful when using it - even if it does feel smooth you could still end up with splinters in your fingers.

Keep us posted on the repair details and time frame for it. It'll be good to know Apple's stance on it!

I certainly will.

Just got back from the Apple shop and the repair will cost 225 pounds. This is the first one they have seen needing this repair and it took them awhile to figure out the price. The entire unibody must be replaced. They explained that almost every external part is attached to the unibody the same way.

So if you break the keyboard, power button, ports, battery meter, etc. you are staring at a 225 pound repair. That is the understanding I have from what they said anyway. Even they seemed a little surprised by that.

I also had a faulty bluetooth unit. The bluetooth is located in the screen and they are going to replace the whole lid. They are doing it for free and didn't give me any grief about it. Once they looked it up and found out that the BT was in the screen of the unit they ruled out damage from the track pad. I don't know what replacing a lid would cost if you had to do it out of pocket, I didn't think to ask.

The estimated time of repair is 7-10 days. If any of you need your new MBP serviced don't be surprised if the genius at the shop takes a little while and doesn't know what things cost as they have seen very few of these things so far. I think mine is actually the first one they have had to do hardware repairs to at the Kingston, UK shop.

So it seems to me that if you break anything in the lid you are looking at a complete lid replacement and if you break anything on the unibody it is also a complete replacement. I am less certain on the lid however.

Some people are going to be shocked at the bill when they dump wine into their keyboards. The old MBP keyboard was $60 to replace when I had mine done in Warsaw for comparison.

I asked them if I get to keep the old unibody and the reply was a very firm no. :) So much for putting it on Ebay.

The only other thing I found out is that buying an extra battery is 99 pounds.

That sucks man - as much as good as the unibody sounds, when something happens to the trackpad meaning the whole casing has to be replaced, it isn't the most repair efficient case.

I'd send an email to sjobs[at]apple.com - some executive might read it and feel some sympathy for you. There was a guy who dropped his iPhone a day after he got it (back when it was first released) and the screen got cracked, he got a free replacement out of good will at the Apple Store he got it from.

I'm surprised they aren't just giving you a new machine - the cost of a new lid is about £600 (least it was for the previous generations) plus labour on top of that.

Did you pay for the MBP with American Express by any chance?

They cover accidental damage for the first 90 days. This would likely be covered under the purchase protection benefit.

I have an am Ex card but no I didnt pay with it.

Unfortunately a requirement for the purchase protection is that the entire purchase was made with the Amex card that offers the benefit.

They also extend the warranty one year beyond the basic 1 year or for a fourth year if you have applecare.

I make it a point to always use AMEX when i purchase electronics. They have come through when needed. Sorry about your trackpad.

I was in the store when Am Ex cut me off and had to use another card to purchase it. I am not very happy but that's how it went. Glad I wasn't in Dubai or using my card in another way. It invoked security questions and I guess I don't qualify.

I was not very happy.

That sucks but its cool that the trackpad is still usable eventhough the glass cracked. Same as the iPhone glass :D

Looking at GSX, it seems the Trackpad replacement needs a whole new upper case. Price is $190 so you'd pay that + tax and service.

It is usable in everyway. That makes it bearable. My last response to this thread will be this... if you break your keyboard be prepared to pay around $400. That's all I can say, thats what the genius said. I don't know and good luck.
