I just hackintoshed 2 spare laptops.

Dell E1505 and Dell E1405

Both work amazingly well, and everything works perfect.

10.5.8!! Woooo! Apparently its a completely safe update for hackers.
My sata on my ga-p35-ds3l crapped out after this update. I suppose i should have had my kexts in the /Extra folder but i didnt. An easy fix and now im running 10.5.8

I can't find a link that shows set ups that simply work.
Tried and true systems that have shown to work.
help?
http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
Theres not much under the 10.5.7 thing unless you are looking to build. Anything that works on 10.5.6 is going to work with 10.5.7 though, so you can look through those lists. The wiki is the only place i found that told me the ga-ep45t-ud3lr motherboard works perfectly, so its a pretty good resource.

does your sleep work?
Its seems that a lot of machines with a disabler kext dont sleep unless you remove both the disabler and appleintelcpupowermanagement.kext.

Nope. x4500 graphics arent going to work. Are you comfortable building your own rig? If so i can throw together a list of parts that will work for you. Its hard to find pre-built pcs that work well with Leo.

Yea, i'm confortable building my own, but I have no clue to what hardware to buy, can you make a list for me or something?

See Post #1951 for a very good list of what you need to build a Hackintosh.

If Apple offered a reasonably priced tower, a lot of the Hackintoshing would end. I have built 2 Hackintoshs for that very reason. Not only are they powerful, they are fun to do. So much fun that I will probably build several more.

Sure, but i need some info from you first. Mainly:
What's your budget?
Also plan on spending about 10% more than you originally wanted to (it always end up working out that way, lol).

Second, what do you do with your computer? Do you like to game, edit video, record music, watch movies, etc? This helps us decide what parts to spend the most money on and what other parts arent as important.

Also, im building this rig soon (hopefully), any input?

this is what I am talking about!
I just want to be able to order the parts and know that it's going to work.
this rig looks like it will destroy some of my FCP HD footage and fly me through PS.
But again, are these all supported?

I am 90% sure all of this hardware will work, Matt. When building a hac you really only have to worry about 3 pieces of hardware: CPU, GPU, and Motherboard.

The board i picked is the cheapest ddr3 gigabyte board so i spent a few minutes searching the IM forums but got nothing. Then i looked in the Wiki and someone said it works perfectly with 10.5.6, and Gigabyte boards generally work anyway, so im comfy with it.

The GPU was easy enough to find out thanks to Netkas who says every 2XX card works perfectly.

Lastly the CPU, which we all know works, but its important to spend the little bit extra and go intel instead of AMD.

Osx doesnt give a crap about ram, case, psu, dvd buner*, hdd, etc.

*Some LG drives are reported to not burn dvds in osx. Im on the fence about the LG in my list because im not certain.

smoking:

thanks!
it looks like something that I would want for editting. guess my imac might have to get sold...

how soon do you plan on building it?

I guess 4 gigs ram is all you really need until 10.6 comes out eh?

I have to wait for some cash to transfer to my paypal account, so i'll probably have the parts ordered by next weekend and have it built within a week after that. Newegg shipping has always been great, often i get parts the very next day.

4gb of cas6 1333mhz is enough for anything i'll ever need. I was going to go with some cas9 PNY ram, but the Crucial just popped into neweggs stock and i want to grab it while its there because its a great deal.
The GA-EP45T-UD3LR supports 16gb (!) ddr3, but i think 4 will cover it now. If the GTX260 has all the fancy openCL stuff in 10.6 i might not need to upgrade my ram/cpu for a long time.

When i get it built i'll definitely post results for everyone to see. It seems to be a good build for the best price/performance ratio right now.

smoking:
whats the total come to?

1333mhz ram!?
Holy *****!
with a quad core?

please let me know what problems you run into, this looks like the rig I will be interested in. Do you use FCP or PS? Those are my main concerns... and maybe LOGIC cause i do recording too.

the GPU looks like it would be sick for color and shake. Does After effects depend on GPU too?

I just threw a Masscool cpu cooler in ($20) and the grand total of the cart is ~$730 w/shipping. Theres also $65 worth of mail in rebates and the gfx card comes with a copy of Terminator Salvation which i can probably get a few bucks for.

So after rebates its $665. I'm now thinking i might wait until the last week of the month because Newegg always has good sales on stuff then and i might be able to knock the cost down a bit or bump up the specs for no cost.

I use PS CS4 a little bit and i can imagine that its awesome on that cpu/gpu/ram combo. I do a little bit in Garageband (never cared for logic and GB gets the job done) so i'll test that out while im at it. I have a E6750 (2.6ghz core2quad) with 4gb ddr2 and it handles 10 tracks in garageband with tons of effects with no problems, i cant wait to see what the quad can do.
I read that the gpu doesnt change render times in After Effects, but i dont do video so idk personally. You can probably drop a 9800gt in instead of the GTX260 and spend the extra on a Q9XXX core2quad and get a little more speed.

The only Adobe program that does GPU acceleration at the moment seems to be Photoshop and that only uses it for things like rotating the canvas and the crappy 3D stuff they've crammed in.

I run a system like this on OSX 10.5.8:

  • Abit IP35 motherboard (P35 chipset, ICH9R..not a great board to be honest)
  • Core2Quad Q9550 2.83 GHz overclocked to 3.4 GHz
  • GTX260 896 MB
  • 4GB DDR2 800 Mhz
  • Echo AudioFire4 FireWire audio interface
GPU and CPU watercooled so the system is silent and runs cool.

The only thing that doesn't work is sleep, apparently it just doesn't work on that motherboard. Everything else works perfectly and even in benchmarks it's faster than any of the real quad core Mac Pros. Having an external FW soundcard makes things easier because integrated chips need new drivers to work.

For my system I only need a few mods:

  • Chameleon 2.0 RC2 bootloader w/ kexts included in it for AHCI support
  • Voodoo kernel 9.7.0 (so that restart/shutdown works)
  • Seatbelt.kext from OSX 10.5.7 (so that iPods etc mount, probably needed because of the Voodoo kernel)
  • Nvidia drivers for GTX260
  • AppleYukon3.kext (altered AppleYukon2.kext to support the mobo's network adapter)
  • AppleDecrypt.kext
  • UUID.kext (to fix FireWire speeds, FW works fine without it though)

It'll be great if it was all less than $1000
Great, now:
Second, what do you do with your computer?

this is important. Cave Man's home-theater hac is nice, but if you arent using it for a home theater you can replace some of his parts and get something tailored to your computer usage. The rig im building will cost me about $700 (not including hdd because i dont need a new one) and it tons more powerful than Cave Man's but it doenst have the frills like IR and a slim case.
For under $1k you can build many different computers but only a select few of them will work for what you need. So what are you going to use this hac for? Graphic design? Final Cut Pro? Home theater? Logic? Gaming?

I'm just going to use it for general web surfing, maybe a little photoshop here and there, but mainly school work.

CaveMan's build seems nice, but did it run good? was it a pain to install osx on it?
