I'm thinking of getting a bunch of Raspberry Pi's for my house. My big plan is to be able to run emulators with roms+save data over the network, and to also stream videos from the server. Do they count as a micro console?

In that use case, I'd say so. If you get that all ironed out, I'd love to hear how well it works. Maybe implement something like that myself.

Yes, I think so, have you seen the Rasberry and lego supercomputer? It is cool as **** IMO :

Whoa! That's not bad!

I was thinking of building a Lego enclosure for my Pi, if we go through with it. It's pretty difficult trying to find a device that will run emulators, connect to a network, and either access videos on NAS or stream them from another computer.

I've seen people using them for emulators with data stored on a network, and obviously they're used for videos too. But I've no idea about Linux and how easy it'd be running both some emulation app/OS and also video. I'm sure it's possible. The thing is I don't want to use it for learning (which is what they're supposed to be for) - I just want it to work as a STB as quickly as possible! Heh.

Of course - you are making it one... ;)

I'd like to know how it works too. I tried to set up a Pi but I couldn't download a viable OS image for it.

Maybe use an old console shell (from a broken one) as a housing?

Post your setup!

Will do! We're going to need at least 5 of them. Ideally I want one for each TV in the house. My big dream is to be able to watch anything on my server anywhere else in the house, on a tablet or TV (including a tube TV! I've bought a HDMI to Scart adapter. I wonder if I'm the only person in the country doing this, for the explicit purpose of creating a "90's retro den" at least). Pi stuff is really well documented on Youtube so I can't imagine stumbling anywhere. If I get it working I'll post my own tutorial, and some cases ;)

Looks like Microsoft is entering the fray with XBox TV:

With my Playstation TV and AppleTV and more great games - still waiting...

(really, I DON'T need to play Sonic games on these - I have my original Sega Genesis for that...)

So, no XBox TV - why anyways? Gamestop has used XBox 360 S units for $79...

The Sony Playstation TV is dead...

and I didn't know - RIP Ouya (they were bought by Razer to pay investors back - who also have a Microconsole - but who even knew?):

The games I check on their website, some of the developers didn't even bother taking out the control circles that are on the mobile versions...

AppleTV - nothing since launch more or less (for me).

A new nVidia Shield to be released? $199? The same price as refurbished XBox One's?

Better stick with the consoles...
