Some of us pass through a whole day sitiing in meetings and its just immensely helpful, more so with the RGB LED that Galaxy Nexus has, as you can understand what type of notification has arrived w/o even lifting the phone.

The RGB led glows in different hues so you can tell from a text message to a Voicemail from the color of the light.

That said, I still prefer the build quality and user experience of Iphone 4 and still holding on to it.

I'm not as so anal that I have to check my phone every 30 seconds/minutes/etc. regardless if its via little bitty pretty blinking light or having to touch my phone and click a button.
I also realize this is an unpopular opinion so I'm sure most will disagree.

But I'm more of a "my life doesn't exist if someone's not messaging/calling me" type of person. I'm more of a "sit out by the pool and relax and who gives a F if I have a message or not" kind of person.
I simply refuse to let my life be ruled in any way by a stupid phone.

If you are so relaxed then you'd use a notification light like I did. If I didn't want to be bothered I'd turn the ring and vibration off and use that light as my only notification. I get to when I get to it.

Or if I'm at work I can use it as a way to never miss a call text or email.

Or just turn it off all together.

Well said. I wouldn't be against them implanting such a system since I know everyone is different, but they should give me the option to turn it off.

As someone that has been wavering between iOS and Android for a couple of years now (currently own a 4s and a Galaxy Nexus), I can honestly say that for me, it all comes down to one missing feature. If Apple were to add a notification LED, they would have me back permanently. Please Apple.. Add this on the iPhone 5! Until then, the Galaxy Nexus edges the iPhone 4s for me (just my opinion.. I realize many would disagree).

if you miss calls ... do they not show up on your lock screen?

I see what you mean, and I do miss the notification light on my old phone - but it hasn't stopped me from having an iPhone :p.

Well, seeing as how there's a toggle for pretty much every type of notification in iOS already, I'm 99% sure that Apple would have a toggle for the LED as well. Are you saying that you would rather not have the feature at all, rather than the option to turn it on/off? Seems like someone's been drinking too much :apple:juice if you ask me :p

No I hear you.
If its an option im definitely turning it off.
But to me it's not a a missing feature or even an important one at all.

Obviously even Apple realizes this is something people want what with the half a**ed camera LED blink on incoming text nonesense they have added. I find it silly when people actually try and say that an option should NOT be added. It would be incredibly easy to incorporate it right into the front glass of the phone. If you want it on, great. If not, you wouldn't even know it's there. I guess some people just can't get it in their heads that just because they don't need a feature doesn't make it worthless.

They do. But the screen is also set to turn off after a short while so as not to drain the battery. With a notification LED you can easily glance at your phone, without touching it, to see if you received any texts/calls/messages etc. IMO not at all the same thing.

LED notifications are very useful and nice to have, but I wouldn't call it a deal breaker.

So a blinking light is what is keeping you away from the iPhone.

Wow - to each his own.

Personally, when I choose a platform I find which one best fits my needs, but I never considered a light a show stopper.

Not exactly what I think a moderator should say that wants a civil, friendly atmosphere but I'm new here and don't really know my way around much. Maybe you two have issues.

Anyway, I like the unobtrusive "ping" that my 4s gives when I get an email or message. I personally don't need a light but wouldn't complain about it either.

What's wrong with what maflynn said?
A moderator can't have an opinion or take part in a discussion?

I knew when I hit the Submit Reply button I would regret it.

It's just struck me as prickish and cynical and rude which seems to be the prevailing attitude on this forum. Yes, I'm new here and not used to the "vibe" but it's here, believe me IMHO.

That said, I've learned a lot through the search function and laughed a lot too but a great percentage of posts here are contradictory and argumentative just for the sake of. Anyway, you asked.

I'd settle for the square icon on the home button pulsing slowly blue or red as a notification rather than a flashing LED.

It's not a deal breaker for me, but if Apple implemented a notification led, I would want it like this (except with a white light rather than a coloured one). The slow pulse would have be like the MacBook when it sleeps. That would be perfect IMO.

I agree about the slow macbook-esque pulse. Even more so if it was the home button

What's with all the rudeness in this forum lately. Seriously, I've been over on WPCentral a lot recently and everyone is so polite and helpful, then I come back here and its like visiting 4chan, just insults and crude comments. I thought the whole point of these forums was to help people with questions and discuss things, not to bitch and whine at people when they say things that don't interest you.

I remember when these forums were a place to share opinions / stimulate discussion. I also remember when Apple's customer base was relatively small and the community spirit was intact. I guess things have changed.

Anyways.. I've been told. Just because I have an opinion, which happens to involve one Apple product not meeting my needs (my Macs, iPads, etc. are all great!), I should move on, and never post here again. Good riddance, and thanks to those that tried to bring some sanity to this thread.

When I had a Nexus I downloaded lightflo from the market.

It allows you to change the colour to any rgb value and set the blink rate etc to one that suits you over the default. Pretty handy.

I wont lie the Nexus almost had me,But alas googles crappy privacy(eg scraping of emails,Carrier IQ)and Battery life kept me away and the privacy issue will always keep me away.Shame webOS died

I thought I would miss it too. 2 weeks after I got my iPhone I stopped thinking about or needing it. All it did was cause me to OCD even more over emails, texts etc. I just keep the second reminder for texts and have not missed the light at all.

Well I'm with the OP. My 50-year-old Palm Treo has a notification LED and I find it to be extremely useful. The convenience of just being able to glance at your phone and know its status without touching is huge.

I work on-call 24/7. It's the middle of the night, I roll over in bed and can instantly see if my phone is a) still receiving a cell signal, b) battery is low, c) missed call, d) text or voicemail waiting. Same goes for when my hands are full or wet or when I set my phone down across the room. While in a meeting I can discretely check the phone's status w/o drawing attention to myself.

I bought my wife a 4S and after a couple of months I asked her what she liked/didn't like the most. Top of the didn't like was no notification LED. That one-time LED flash deal Apple has now is a joke and nearly useless by comparison.

A glowing home button or hidden LED behind the front glass both sound great for the next iPhone.

I don't miss it in the least. Nothing like waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the LED flashing. So annoying.

Besides, I'm sure there's an app or hack out there that will allow you to use your flash to notify you.

Maybe I missed the post already but has anyone suggested turning on the "LED Flash for Alerts" option?

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/tips/comments/making-your-iphones-led-flash-for-alerts/
Thanks for the help, but yeah, this and several other threads know about that feature. It feels kinda just tacked-on without the usual Apple finesse. It doesn't offer continuous notification, so if you're not there to see it go off the first time, you're SOL - what good is that? And it has zero options. The iPhone LED camera flash blinks three times (annoyingly bright at night!), then stops - and it only does this while in lock screen mode.

What I and others are asking for is a more subtle and classy effect such as a glowing home button or small LED behind the glass that's in the front (or in addition to one that's in the back) and that offers customizable options for various notifications/status.

I don't miss it in the least. Nothing like waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the LED flashing. So annoying.
I can see how that could be a problem for some, but that could easily be cured in settings. My ancient Palm phone can be set not to display LED notifications between xx:xx and xx:xx hours.
