Was there ever any internal designation within Apple? Or is this just something that a bunch of people on the internet thought up because it made sense?

"G3" was Apple's own designation. After the 601, 603, and 604, Apple's marketing gurus wanted something to really differentiate the PowerPC 750. They advertised it as the "G3" for "Generation 3," the logic being that the 601 was "Generation 1" and the 603 and 604 were "Generation 2."

Someone was bragging about having a G6 Mac the other day.

I bragged that I have a G7 Mac.

They claimed there is no such thing.

I told them to prove it.

End of discussion.
Hopefully they research a little and discover they don't have a G6, assuming they have a G-anything Mac.

i hate it too it just seems like people are lazy they throw out terms in which they want you to translate. Then when you correct them they get all up in arms. I worked at CompUSA for a year and when i would go from showing them a iBook to a powerbook they would be like these are the G5's. I'm like no there is no such thing as a G5 processor in a Powerbook. The only G5 is the Tower and i point to the thing. Then they say ok give me the 15" they get on their phone when it rings, " im at compusa"...." gettting a g5"... I just ignore it they just think whats the fastest and they throw it out there. Some People need to research and get informed before they open there mouth.
