I think it's very much in-keeping with the iPod line and Mac lines. iPods, for example, have never had sequential numbers attached and are given generation numbers (for identification purposes).
I guess Apple decided that this was a good, well-established way of separating product versions; it certainly helps to lessen the feeling of a particular revision becoming 'replaced' or being made 'redundant' when a new generation is released.

Just think - in two or three years when someone asks you "Hey, are you gonna get that iPad that Apple just announced?" you can be all "Nah, I already have the new iPad!"
Just call it whatever you damn well want. LOL.
If you want to go around and call the iPad "The New iPad", go ahead. If people call you a jackass for doing so, don't get offended.
I mean seriously, basic English grammar. "This is the 'The New iPad'" If you have even the slightest amount of brain power (and grammar knowledge), you will know this is wrong. If you are so adamant about it, more power to you. Let's see what you're calling next year's iPad (compared to this year's iPad).
