What did everyone end up calling their new iPad in iTunes or on initial setup?

Mine is:

iPadHD

I probably would have kept it the default but I still own an original iPad 1.

Ohhhh....The agony!

I think Apple has learned from the ridiculous iPhone naming schemes. There was never an iPhone2, for example. It was called the iPhone 3G, but only because it had a 3G antenna. So what was 3Gs supposed to mean? I think it was a good idea to do away with that and I hope the next iPhone is also just called the new iPhone.

It's not so much troublesome to say, it's the accessory makers calling it something different then what it is: iPad (3rd Generation).

When you search online for cases, folios, ect most call it iPad 3, or "The new iPad" so people get confused. It's going to take time but the further away we get from "iPad 2", the easier it will be :)

NOO! Do not do this, even when every muscle, every fiber of your being tells you just to smile and nod when someone asks is that the iPad 3, you say NO STUPID! its the new iPad, the 3rd generation, whatever. But surrendering is how we wind up with a country full of idiots looking for iTOUCH's at the store.

Yep, I hate when people say "iTouch".

I'm confused, exactly what *should* the accessory makers call it? They need to distinguish between the generations because their accessories often don't fit anything but a specific generation?

I know everyone who thinks of Apple as a member of their family is going to vote me down, but I completely agree with the OP. This is much much harder to deal with and I'm already tired of it. I don't care if they distinguish them with numbers or things like "HD" or "S", but it would be a ton easier to communicate with people about the "new iPad" if it had a more specific name. 10 months from now I suppose it'll change to the "newer" iPad and then a year from now when the newer model is released it'll be called the "not new anymore iPad that came after the iPad 2" or the "early 2012 version"?

And yes, I know they do this with other products and I've always had issues with referring to my MBP as the "mid-2010 model MBP". That's a lot more troublesome to deal with.

Well I voted you up because I understand the frustration. And it starts with resellers and accessory makers.

If you go to Apples webpage, it's easy to distinguish an accessory for the new iPad. The problem starts when others like Amazon, eBay, ect...call the iPad something other then they should. It won't be hard to keep track in the future: iPad (4th Generation), iPad (5th Generation), iPad (6th Generation)....just like iPods. People just need to follow the proper naming convention and stop making up names.

Yes of course leave it to you to stoke the fire some more

There's no fire to be stoked.

Apple has decreed that the product shall be called "The New iPad". As such, calling it the The New iPad is appropriate. I love my The New iPad. Don't you love your The New iPad? So why all the The Fuss?

Here's the reason. Apple had a big naming problem. You heard it here first. They couldn't call it....

..."The iPad 3" because the 'three' implies 3G to which this product is beyond, would cause confusion because it's 4G capable. 'Three' sounds old, not new.

..."The iPad 4G" because the 'four-gee' implies that everyone is going to get supermegafast 4G LTE coverage which has very limited application on current networks, would have pissed off buyers and the telcos.

..."The Third Generation iPad" because it's inconsistent with the naming conventions of other Apple products and doesn't say anything, doesn't market the product properly.

So when Apple couldn't use "3" or "4G" or "3rd Generation" they did the logical thing, took advantage of the powerful word "New" and left it at that.

I'm pretty sure no one implies "3G" from the number "3", unless the conversation is about a four-year-old iPhone.

"iPad 3" would not have confused anyone, and in fact most people had named it that before it was announced (with zero confusion).

They were wrong. its The New iPad. Get used to it. This message was typed on my The New Ipad and I couldnt be happier!

If I bought one I would have called it the "iTouch Maxi Plus"

:D

I still laugh at the name iTouch, and laugh even harder at the people who get mad at seeing that name..

The thing is, next year when they put The new iPad up for sale as the $399 model or something, how will they different it from the "New The new iPad?"

Wirelessly posted

I read from somewhere that The name 'iPad' cannot be used in Chinese markets. So maybe Apple is trying to come up with new names..

Apparently they rename the former The New iPad to The iPad From Early 2012, to make room for the new The New iPad.

Obviously this is the least confusing and simplest way to go.

I love it that so many people just bought the reduced-price iPad 2, and came home to conversations like this:

"Hey, check out my new iPad!"
"Oh, you got the new iPad? Cool, can I see the new retina display?"
"No no, it's not *the* new iPad, but it is *a* new iPad."
"Oh, so it's not the iPad 3."

See, couldn't be less confusing. Nice job Apple.

You're talking about the 1%'er geek types like us on this forum.

Go ask my mom, you'll find things are very different in the real world.

It's the new iPad (3rd gen). Just mention 3rd gen and people will know what you mean.

Check out what one of the more popular (most popular?) teardown site calls it!

CLICK HERE - This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about. From them to accessory makers, it's going to be confusing until everyone adopts the standard: iPad (3rd Generation) :D
