I have to agree, > 1,000 is a bit much in my book for an iOS product. The higher price trend on iPads is a little sad. I have a choice though, I can vote with my wallet and so far I've not taken the plunge on a new iPad, particularly because of the price.

As everyone has been saying, after the last event from Apple, Im at a loss for words.
RUBBER Watch bands that cost $50, iPhone 5, (My fault) I meant "iPhone SE" with the same specs as the 6s released 6 months AFTER the original 6s was released. AND the iPad "Pro" with the same ram as the iPad Air 2, BUT WAIT! THERE MORE: Its starts at $599.99!! New screen, True Tone, New Processor! and a HUGE Camera Bump!! When the iPad Air 2 was released, it had a New Screen! Better Processor! 2gb Ram BUT WAIT THERES MORE, it started at $499.99!! So now we have a IPAD that costs more than a 2012 and 2014 Mac Mini and nearly the same cost as an 5K Retina iMac??? Im a die hard Apple fan and I was going to upgrade, but this is getting ridiculous! RANT OVER! OUT!

You have my vote on Apple price policy, especially outside US... but please: huge camera bumps ? Huge ?

I recently created a shopping cart in the german Apple Store, a 6S Plus 128GB, Apple Care and Case.
It costs 1282,95 Euro. That's just crazy.

The camera bumps are crazy, put worse cameras in them, dissuade people from using such a ludicrously oversized camera.

The price thing though, for the same configuration mentioned in this thread as compared to the Air 2 at launch is £60.

We can't expect prices to stay the same forever, especially as the components cost for the Pro will be higher thanks to two big changes in the screen technology, True Tone and Pencil compatibility.

But there's plenty of options in both the iPad range and competitors products if a 9% price increase for a more capable product seems too high. Hell, that's not much more than I paid for my Apple Watch and it's not nearly as capable as an iPad Pro.

Sales will tell. it's funny, even the OP rages and then admits he will buy one. Sure it's expensive, but his actions show that the product is good value.

NO. I am not buying one period. Look at my signature all older apple products (except my 6s), I am happy to give Apple my money, but I cannot justify 1k for this ipad. I RAN and purchased the iPad Air 2 64gb Lte from the Apple Store when it first came out in late 2014, paid $780 cash, but I refuse to pay 1k for a mobile os. I understand prices will increase ($129 for "new" trackpad????" ), I understand the ipad has great value but, Enough is enough.

No no that's just a concept photo. The actual photo was released today by Apple. I can see why people don't like the camera hump, but it shouldn't wobble too much when typing flat on the table. As long as your table as a hole in it near the lens

.....

You have a one year old iPad, by the time you have a reason to upgrade all of the new features will have trickled through the product line.

Myself, the 9.7" is exactly what I've been waiting for. I'm upgrading from an iPad mini first gen. The fact that I can use the pen, sold instantly.

As much as I want to upgrade I'm voting w/ my wallet as well. I think we'll see non-Apple stores discounting once all the early adopters have been satiated. Maybe Apple is playing the old retail "game" of jack up the the MSRP to a silly price to provide a cushion for a big sale discount, but one that actually just brings the price down to an acceptable level. I don't know if Apple did this with AW but there were a lot of retailers offering $50-100 off for a long time -- almost like a never ending sale. Then Apple just went ahead and lowered the MSRP and the sales disappeared over night.

I wonder if this tendency to over price, even by Apple's history, is the direct result of Angela Ahrendts and what we are witnessing is the Burberryization of Apple. Where Apple once was affordable luxury, it now aims to be pure luxury.

The only way you can really justify the higher end models is if you say that's your main computer (or you just have money to burn on toys).

Or you use it everyday to help you earn money or if it enhances every aspect of your work or...

Many people are buying these to DO WORK. Not as "toys". Whether that work is creative, professional or as a student... even $1400 is easily justified for something you use everyday.

I have a $10,000 Mac Workstation... would you call that absurd too? It turns out that if it saves me just ~60 hours a year then it is actually SAVING my employer money! Trust me: I get my money's worth out of that machine... just like I do out of my $1200 iPP.

How much something is "worth" entirely depends on what it's going to be applied to.

That's what's so baffling about Apples campaign to promote the iPad as a computer replacement. Imagine this:

$499 Air 3
49 Smart Keyboard
------
$550 Laptop Replacement

The smart connector isn't a feature, it's a port. And in a world of $30 keyboards then the smart keyboard (which I owned and liked) is not a $150 device. So get some reasonable pricing going and you've got something you really can market to those 600million un-rich pathetic losers using 5yr old computers. (And then in two years you can shame them into buying again.)

Take it one step further and compare it against Apple's laptop offerings.

$949 12.9" iPad Pro, 128GB version
$99 Pencil
$169 Smart keyboard
Total 1,217.00

$1,299 - Apple MacBook - base model (256GB/8GB)

Why would you include a pencil in the price when in a conversation about it functioning as a laptop and comparing it to a laptop. Laptops don't use pencils

That's the perfect comparison! It makes the iPP look like a steal! For a couple of hundred bucks less you get an incredibly precise touch-screen device that you can also WRITE ON! The MacBook only has an "old school" normal screen that just sits there! :)

It all depends on what you need.

I'm confused about that as well. That's such a Donald trump thing to do

lol - my bad! Just a quoting error on my part.... fixed now!

Mostly because people seem to generally get it, but if you think its distracting from the central discussion, then the price is now 1,118 vs. 1,299 for a laptop that has more ram, more storage, the ability to run and easily multitask and runs desktop class apps, like Photoshop, Lightroom, and what not.

Again for a tablet that does less, has more restrictions, cannot use USB peripherals, its very expensive.

I'm with you... And once you take the discount on the rMBP you're down to $1100 or so, so back on par from a price point of view...

It's almost like they're two different devices with different use cases! As far as the tablet doing less, that's completely subjective. For many people, it's much more convenience and less stress for their day to day computing (more value). If you need the laptop, Apple still makes them.

I understand that the iPad is mostly a consumption device, but the fact remains the price is very high and a laptop can do just about everything a tablet can do, but a tablet cannot do a lot of what a laptop can do - at least easily.

I know I'm in the minority and my position will be picked apart and one size does not fit all, but the fact remains that Apple's iPad sales are not growing but decreasing, and apple is charging even more money.

I'm not against the iPad but its hard to justify 1,000 dollar purchase.

mine was like $1,500 for 128gb and an apple pencil (in canada)

more to buy but we'll get more for them when we sell them too

Well said and I pretty much agree. The thing now too is that laptops are getting very svelt, light, easy to transport themselves where they didn't used to be. So the portability argument while still valid holds less weight than ever before. An MBA these days is quite a powerful machine and pretty easy to lug around. The new MacBook even mor so although that's weaker hardware wise.

You and I know what Im getting at here. ;)

While I can understand the complaints about iOS devices, specifically in regards to storage upgrades. I do NOT understand why so many people complain about the apple accessories.

In the electronics business (and in computer sales specifically), "brand name/1st party" accessories are ALWAYS where the real money is made. When I was a teen and worked at Best Buy, the margin on computers was tiny, but the margin on the accessories was HUGE. That is why retailers always push for you to get the "complete package" - in PC sales the accessories were printers, printer ink, 'gold' USB cables, service plans. The business hasn't changed and other companies' practices are largely the same.

One of the reason's Apple has been so successful is because they have been able to drive huge margins on hardware AND accessories (especially lately). As others have mentioned, accessories from Apple are ridiculous for what they are:

- Anything Apple makes out of silicone might as well be 95%-98% profit (Apple watch sport bands $49, iPhone 6s/6s Plus $35-$39 dollars, iPad Pro 12.9 / iPad Pro 9.7 / iPad mini 4 silicone cases -$79 / $69 / 59)
- Apple watch leather bands $150 (Margin - probably close to $130)
- Any Apple cable (which a large majority of people buy) - 90%-95% profit [standard USB cable margin at Best Buy was around close to 90%).

While these are just a few examples, every company does this because they would be stupid not too. As you yourself have demonstrated, you are willing to pay a large premium for "not so special accessories." About the only accessory I think you need from Apple is the Apple Pencil. It is what it is. I am guilty of buying Apple accessories when I didn't need to, I just go in knowing that is the case (and always will be). **I do think they are really shafting iPad customers by not offering the smart cases - but that is one of the few items I have been upset about**

While in the past, Apple heavily controlled prices and Apple reseller's couldn't deviate from official MSRP. That changed from the early 2000's, and now that hardware sales are predicted to drop off a bit, I believe they have deviated from their previous business model. Take a smaller margin on the hardware (example: iPhone SE) will help drive sales of hardware and 1st party accessories. The average customer buys an official Apple lightning cable, and an extra apple power adapter - they don't have to, but they do it for many reasons. That is the really the entire value behind a "brand" - you can charge a premium because people will buy it despite the higher price for a number of reasons (maybe because it's just easy / reliability / warranty).

You cannot write on a laptop... therefore, if you're in the market for a device you can write on, the laptop actually looks like a HUGE waste of money.

Imagine this scenario... what if Apple had sold ONLY iPads for years and years. Everyone would be used to writing on them and using tablets. THEN they came out with this ugly "laptop" thing. It costs more, you can't write on it, touching the screen does nothing, you have to interact using this dumb "pointer" thing that you move around using a trackpad, the keyboard is permanantly stuck to it, you can't do anything with it while you stand up.... did I mention you can't write on it? What WAS Apple thinking! Why would they release such a stupid product... and make it cost MORE! Idiots... Apple is definitely dieing because of this decision!

It all depends on what your needs are! To someone trying to take notes and use a tablet a laptop is not even a possibility.
