As everyone has been saying, after the last event from Apple, Im at a loss for words.
RUBBER Watch bands that cost $50, iPhone 5, (My fault) I meant "iPhone SE" with the same specs as the 6s released 6 months AFTER the original 6s was released. AND the iPad "Pro" with the same ram as the iPad Air 2, BUT WAIT! THERE MORE: Its starts at $599.99!! New screen, True Tone, New Processor! and a HUGE Camera Bump!! When the iPad Air 2 was released, it had a New Screen! Better Processor! 2gb Ram BUT WAIT THERES MORE, it started at $499.99!! So now we have a IPAD that costs more than a 2012 and 2014 Mac Mini and nearly the same cost as an 5K Retina iMac??? Im a die hard Apple fan and I was going to upgrade, but this is getting ridiculous! RANT OVER! OUT!

So now accessories are required? You forgot he screen ported for, pen case, back case, AppleCare, tears from an Angel...

You cannot write on a laptop... therefore, if you're in the market for a device you can write on, the laptop actually looks like a HUGE waste of money.

Imagine this scenario... what if Apple had sold ONLY iPads for years and years. Everyone would be used to writing on them and using tablets. THEN they came out with this ugly "laptop" thing. It costs more, you can't write on it, touching the screen does nothing, you have to interact using this dumb "pointer" thing that you move around using a trackpad, the keyboard is permanantly stuck to it, you can't do anything with it while you stand up.... did I mention you can't write on it? What WAS Apple thinking! Why would they release such a stupid product... and make it cost MORE! Idiots... Apple is definitely dieing because of this decision!

It all depends on what your needs are! To someone trying to take notes and use a tablet a laptop is not even a possibility.
Can the MacBook replace your iPad?

Hmm, Apple's target margin is minimum 40%. I've calculated margins on previous models based on teardowns and it goes up to 60-70% on top models. Another thing to consider is retailers do get a cut so it's not like Apple is getting the full MSRP. Those calculations are just based on manufacturing cost, though. Apple still has other costs such as R&D, marketing, product returns and warranties, etc.

I mean the entry model.. which is one of the lower margin products apple sells.. bump up the NAND flash once or twice and it quickly moves to being some of the higher margin products

And it is at least 40% on entry level models. Played around with this on an Excel spreadsheet before and based on iSuppli numbers (manufacturing costs) and MSRP, for the base model it usually dances around the 40-50% mark (even for iPod Touch). Exception is the iPhone which enjoys a fairly huge markup thanks to subsidies/carrier financing.

Of course that's MSRP so there's still the retailer's cut and that doesn't include Apple's other costs such as R&D, patent licensing, marketing, product returns and warranty replacement, etc.

iOS devices (for iPhone, unlocked price) has approached ~USD1K for a long time already. Apple, while maintaining the base model price at similar level (or a mild increase), has kept the base storage at 16GB for years. 16GB of storage may be sufficient in 2009, but definitely not for 2016. As a result, to purchase a current iOS device with a reasonable amount of storage, we will need to get at least the "better" model (2nd tier), which is $100 more. To have really good storage in the 4K video / Live Photo era, it's not unreasonable to get the top tier (~128GB), which is already close to or exceeded the $1K range, if you opt for the LTE version for iPad or Plus version for iPhone.

But those that want to "write" on a tablet are very much in the minority...
I recall when MS came out with the surface and a pen it was the pimple on satans bottom, now all of a sudden it's the best thing since sliced bread because it has a apple logo...

What was the best thing before sliced bread? I digress..

This is why you have a choice, you don't need to batter the rest of the forum or bend them to your way of thinking in hope you can declare yourself supreme know it all and the apple tsar or even supreme mugwump. Didn't Samsung also do this on the Galaxy S too... ? hmmm. Still ends up at the same place, for many, regardless, 1K for an iOS device is not going to fly and not because they can't afford it.

This device is being marketed as a "Laptop Replacement" with a Keyboard and Pencil sold separately.
I have had an iPad for 3 years now and NEVER ONCE thought" "Oh, I need a $169.00 keyboard and a $99.99 Pencil so I can really use my iPad!!!"

Thats my point, once you pay for the keyboard, Pencil and cover, you basically are paying for the price of a RMB or nearly a RMBP! I love Apple, but I have to be prudent as well. This is an iPad with a crippled OS on it. I just can't bare the 1k price when I could just buy a full functioning machine for the same price from the same company. It just honestly doesn't make any sense. So we have iPads costing nearly the same prices as Macs?? Really? The original concept of the iPad was to REPLACE the "NetBook" craze with something more affordable and useful. Now in 2016 that same iPad cost the nearly the same as a Mac??? Sorry guys but I'm sober and the high from the Kool-aid is gone on this one...

I would have to agree with you that price wise, Apple has shifted its strategy from a low cost product (for Apple) to an average cost product (again for Apple).

But look at the other side of the equation:
- the iPad 1 was really crippled (ram, no camera, etc)
- the iPad Pro 9.7" vs the iPad 2 is 10x faster (at least)
- the iPad 2 could not touch the performance of an iMac / Macbook, while the iPad Pro has similar or faster benchmarks than the base model for an iMac or Macbook (30% faster)
- our beloved iPhones cost $849 for the 128Gb 5.5" model

The main question is: would you rather have Apple keep the iPad with a crippled performance ? or would you let Apple put a beast inside that little tablet ?

The other question is: why are you complaining about $1k price and citing the iPad 1 ? You can have the iPad Air 2 for $399/$499 at >10x the performance from the original iPad. Here is your Apple "netbook".

Try looking at the Canadian prices. No, iOS devices should not rival Windows ultrabooks in price. My Dell XPS 13 from last year with a core-i5 processor, touchscreen, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD cost me about $1300 CDN. The 256 GB 9.7" iPad Pro cost $1200 CDN. I know the value of the Canadian dollar has had a rough year but still...

Oh man but then you would HAVE to use Windows! I like the option of BootCamp, I have 10 Pro on mine, but not being able to breathe a little while using an Apple OS would be one hell of a strain.

But I'm comparing the price of Windows PCs to iPads, and it's not like you have an OS choice on an iPad either.

Besides, Windows is my preferred desktop OS.

The thing is you can already get Core 2 Duo or Core i3-level Windows laptops for the $500 Apple charges for new iPads even back in 2010. Nowadays, i3 laptops have even dropped to the $300-400 range. All my iPads (64-128GB LTE) cost more than the purchase price on my laptops (granted, not so much after factoring 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD upgrade back when 1TB was $650).

To me, the laptop and tablet serve different functions. I'm not bringing the laptop with me to the doctor's office so I can read comics while in the waiting room. Just a matter of how much someone is willing to pay for the convenience and that's going to differ person to person.

Exactly, but it is an Apple OS which is much less fatiguing to use in my opinion. But I've been with Apple since 97.

C'mon man. I can't go back to Windows after 8 years. Windows is that ex girlfriend that gave you hell, sounds awful and takes too long to get going.

I keep picturing Chandler desperately trying to avoid Janice !!!

I hear a lot of Apple users who dumped Windows years ago say that, but the thing is, Windows has cleaned up nicely over the years, at least I think so. She's not the same girl that you left 8 years ago.

Janice will always be Janice.

I understand that particularly for office work, Windows still rules but I will tell you one small anecdote:
- I installed W10 preview in my old Vaio (top of the line back then)
- I was trying to manually add a video driver (old machine needs manual config, but that's OK)
- what was my surprised that W10 pop up asking: "please insert driver/disk in drive A"

C'MON MAN !!!
