What I find even more worrisome is that it's incredibly difficult to read the battery percentage on the home screen there, not to mention the other symbols (for those not as familiar with iOS as we are) ... The text - whether ultra thin or not - absolutely needs more stroke and/or drop shadow.

Apple is almost forcing users to use dark backgrounds.
 
The one thing I actually liked the first moment I saw Apple unveil iOS 7 was the thin font. Of course, they changed it . . . I think the font is not suited to being bolder, no matter how slightly. Oh well. I hope they change it back. The icons were completely jarring to me at first, and, of course, they have barely changed them. I am okay with the icons now, in general, as the new system asthetic has grown on me, but they could use some tweaking -- that's one area where there's room for improvement.

That could be on purpose, to make the lock screen be somewhat more "glanceable" so to say--so that you can quickly see more information from possibly somewhat further away at a quick glance.
