Apple laptops don't stand out as more reliable than HP laptops according to Consumer Reports.

The 15" MBP is certainly the nicer machine. And highest rated on CR. But you pay $1350 more than this as powerful HP laptop for that privilege.

And don't be threatened. Some of us use and own both Windows pcs and Macs.

I'm not really a fan of many of the new laptops with an "HD" display that sport at 15" display with 1366x768 resolution since wider doesn't really net me a better workspace. We recently got new cheap Toshiba Core i& (Arrandale) laptops that sport this resolution, and I declined an upgrade at this time and chose to upgrade my old Dell Latitude D820 to a faster and bigger HDD and 4GB RAM. This laptop also has a 15" display and a 1280x800 resolution, which is actually slightly better for use on the plant floor when I can't be at my desk hooked up to a 20" monitor with 1600x1200 resolution for doing work on spreadsheets, SQL, AutoCAD, and PLC ladder logic. The highest resolution that I'd probably be comfortable with (until OS's become resolution independent) will be 1440x900, which my Late 2008 Unibody MBP 15" has.

My girlfriend's brother has an older HP that has power supply that seem to keep pulling the power cable out of the brick a lot & has a hard to use touch pad, especially a compared to a MBP. Her aunt just recently got a cheap $400 special HP laptop that has an even harder to use touch pad and a cheap plasticy feel that makes my Dell Latitude feel solid.

My opinion on PC's is that "yeah they're cheaper, but it still run Windows." Have fun reinstalling the OS every 12-16 months if you plan on keeping that computer for any length of time.

I got in Nov a Sony Vaio F13 with Quad Core because Apple had none :(. I wish I had waited a few months... I cannot believe that after so many years they do not get sleep/hibernate right. In my Macbook it just works, always. In this machine... hit and miss and drained battery, every time :(.
Did I mention the horrible battery life ?
At least has quad-core... and USB3... and non-glossy high-res screen... something is something.
Do yourself a favor: get a real computer with a real OS: an Apple Macbook/Pro with Mac OS X. Not everything I needs runs on W7, I thought I'd not have to recur to virtualization :(

As opposed to getting a new Macbook Pro that will overheat and burn a hole in the ozone layer?

what? I played NBA 2K11 and Borderlands yesterday for like 5 hours (lazy day) and noticed no such heat issues. I haven't noticed any "heat issues" with my MBP since I picked it up on 2/24 and I use it everyday.

Well hibernate works fine in Windows for me everytime. It's what I mainly use instead of shutting it down. But putting Windows to sleep is a nightmare. The first thing I do under any Windows machine is disable sleep.

Because they aren't. It's like people here completely ignore all the problems everyone is having with these things all the time and just continue to live in a fantasy world where macs never break and pcs cause cancer. Brainwashing at its finest

Why do people buy expensive Applecare if Mac's are so good and don't break like HP laptops?

Asus gives a standard 2 year warranty on hardware, if Apple is so good, why they give only 1 year warranty then?

high res display on a 15 inch? Do you want severe eye stain?

Haha. First that's quite the argument, "severe eye strain"

Second, 1366x768 is lower than even the lowest available 15" MBP screen resolution.

For comparison, the 11" Macbook Air has a 1366x768 screen.

Just wanted to point out also that I have, use, and build PCs. Especially on the desktop end you can build a powerhouse PC for much cheaper than anything Apple offers. In the world of notebooks though screen resolution, screen quality, build quality, and materials used all make a big difference since this is a device you constantly are holding, moving, and touching. A notebook doesn't get tucked in the corner beside your desk.

Why do people constantly bring up HP as the competition for Macs? Its the PC company I'm least likely to consider... I'll take Acer/Dell anyday to HP amongst the cheapies, and if I wanted a quality PC laptop I'd be looking more towards Asus/Lenovo.

But HP? Seriously? Why pick the WORSE manufacturer of PC laptops?

i used to be all about the specs and while there are some great widows machines out there. its all about the experience. macs > windows

you don't buy a mac because it has better specs. you buy a mac because the OS is simply better than windows.

The HP quad edition have updated their graphics card and other components. It features a 1GB Radeon(TM) HD 6770M GDDR5 Graphics [HDMI, VGA].

It's quite sad when you can get this for $999 plus tax.

The HP is cheap plastic cr*p with no service or support to speak of, runs Windows, and has a terrible display. Enjoy.

Better GPUs, more options, BD choice, eSATA, HDMI, optional 3G,
multicard readers, USB3 and lower prices don't mean a better computer.
Don't buy that PC junk. :)

quite sad? ... why? ... did you buy one?

lmao

Look what it comes with

HP touchpads are terrible. i returned an HP DM4 because the touchpad was unbearable. HP can't even make a basic thing like a touchpad work good. Read every HP laptop review in the past few yrs.

I was going to say it, but it needs to be.

Do people hate something for the sake of hating it?

Last week I bought my first macbook, a 13" pro and I love all of it, mainly the build quality, power and battery life.

I moved from a really awfully specced computer (clevo m76s, look it up and be appalled) , but I had and have no problems with Windows. It's sold to a different audience (for the most part) and is so built for it. Macs and OS X are built for people who want to be a bit more productive (again, for the most part before someone bites my head off). Yes it Windows can be unstable, but OS X is made by the company who build the products it's used on, Windows is used by many companies. Apple can fine tune a bit easier.

But why do apple/OS X users INSIST everything is better and would seemingly die to defend the cause? If the OP wants to buy a HP (I had a HP laptop, love it, apart from the hinges, it worked and looked like a dream), then let them buy a HP laptop. It's his money, but more importantly, his opinion. I've moved onto a mac, I have no intention on doing heavy gaming on it when I have an xbox. I've bought it to be creative.

Let the OP come onto a mac forum and say he wants to buy a HP. It IS cheaper, and so are his needs.

Bring on the abuse...

I agree.

It's all about your priorities.

I'm sure 400HP Mustang GT owners think that people buying 400HP BMW's are spending way more than necessary for the same power. Thing is, you're not just paying for raw power when you buy a car...or a computer. Let everyone be happy with what they're buying and why they're buying it. Windows 7 is solid and stable. Still has its own legacy Windows issues (registry still blows, winSXS is still poorly handled causing bloat and slow-down), but it's certainly the best they've made.

For my money? I'd rather have a MacBook Pro and multitouch over any PC I've owned. Once you get used to what makes a Mac unique, it's hard to not come back for more. I've now purchased my second Mac in 2 years after 25 previous years of nothing but PCs. I'm competent enough to have done tech support for PCs for several years. Honestly, I didn't think I'd get another Mac...but the experience was just too good...too easy...too smooth to walk away from. It's the little things AND a few big things that make me love it. I don't know if I'll be a Mac guy (or a BMW guy) for life, but I can say that I'm happier right now more than I ever was with any of my PCs. and instead of worrying about finding ways to make my machine run faster or safer, I'm spending time actually DOING things.

The only thing I'd like out of a future Macbook Pro is a RGB LED screen (DreamColor 2-caliber...or at least XPS16-caliber). That's all I need. Otherwise, my MBP's have been perfect machines. ymmv.

fwiw, I have 1 MBP, a Dell i7 system, an HP Elitebook tablet, a Dell E1705 17" laptop, an iPad and a netbook that I use constantly. I've owned 4 PC laptops over the last 10 years and 4 desktops going back to 1990 (Windows 3.1- Win7). I'm NOT a n00b. I'm not inexperienced or under-educated.

I am sure that running OS X has been the smoothest, most predictable and comfortable computer experience I've ever had.
