Hey hey leave the lighted Apple logo out of this 🤣... I miss it on the MacBook. I'm glad my iMac doesn't have it because it sits next to a window and it would shine through my curtains like a big "I have an expensive computer inside, come steal it" sign"
Since you miss the lighted logo, here is the MacBook Air 11" next to the M1 MBA 13" being sent to you via the macBook 12" lol

I used to have a 13” MacBook Pro with the lighted Apple logo. I still have it in storage somewhere but three of the keys died and they told me a keyboard replacement would cost about $800 😒

Yea, that is too much to spend unless you collect Macs. I need to get a new battery for the 11" Air at some point. The battery health shows 79 - 81% depending on the day. lol It is in perfect shape otherwise. It runs BS well with just 4GB of RAM.

So I have waited years to finally get an iMac and this is the look of the redesign? I just saw these and the colors completely took the professional look away from the iMac and made them look like an elementary classroom on Nickelodeon.

These new pastel colors definitely take the elegant appearance away from what Apple stood for with their iMac's and products overall. The older models gave the iMac a nice Apple look...a great and professional machine. These colors are like which toy do you want from a product that belongs on Nickelodeon. I get it, colors are not for everyone but why is every option that way? Its like you have to get a color or you don't get one. A bit childish looking color options.

If you want something simple and more elegant your only option is the silver one and the silver is so bland and boring it looks like yogurt. It makes the screen look like a plastic rectangle.

The other colors are so vibrant on one side and then so pastel on the other side. It makes the chin pop out and become even more noticeable than before. I don't know how annoying the color of the bezel will be when you are working on the iMac and staring at a blue or orange or green chin all day with a white bezel around.

Why does it not come in the Space Gray color? That color would at least make the iMac look professional again and less blinding.

Imagine you have a modern looking office with simple colors and want a black computer but now you have a freaking BLUE iMAC on your desk.

I sure hope the 27" replacement comes in Space Gray.
I cannot take any of this seriously. It’s just whining with no objectivity whatsoever.

The whining over colour is so over-the-top absurd. Get the damned Silver and the only difference between that and the previous design is the colour of the bezel. The chin is proportionately SMALLER than it was before. There is SIGNIFICANTLY LESS bezel than before. The display of the old 21.5 was 63 percent of the whole frontal area of the computer. The display of the new 24 is 75 percent of the frontal area—SIGNIFICANTLY BIGGER than the old design.

The computer has outstanding performance for an entry level lineup, performance better than upper lines of other manufacturers. What the hell else do you want?

I have often seen customers bitch about things they don’t even understand—them I just let rant because trying to correct them is a no-win proposition. But here the childish lack of objectivity from people who should know better is astounding.

Objectively Apple made this computer better in every meaningful way and in some measures by a significant degree. They broadened its appeal by offering multiple colour options while still retaining the established Silver colour for the more conservative customers. It’s a win in every way.

But the self-obsessed whiners are losing their minds because Apple dared to retain the chin, dared to change the colour of the bezel, dared not to offer Space Gray as an option and dared to offer more than one established colour—consequently risking others might think you didn’t buy a “real” computer because no “serious” computer would come in anything other than grey, black or muted dark blue.

If I’m interested in a car I hope they have one colour I like it in. Sometimes I see more than one and I have to make a choice. Often there are several colours I don’t care at all for, but as long as they have one I’m happy and couldn’t care less what others might like.

Same thing.

They never had a space grey iMac anyway, so you’re still in the same situation. Other than the Pro, which you said yourself in a different reply you shouldn’t have to pay more. So, it’s silver. Which is still an option...

All of these comments about “it’s not professional” crack me up. “Professional” computers don’t have a defined, boring color scheme. And even if it did (which is a ridiculous idea), these aren’t professional machines. They’re not labeled or marketed that way...

I really don’t get why so many people have “it’s not professional if it’s not boring” etched into their brains. The looks of a tool have zero to do with if it’s professional. Do the Heat stop being professional basketball players on the games they wear bright neon Miami-inspired uniforms? All of MLB stop being professional on Mother’s Day when they wear pink, use pink bats, etc? Baby blue on Father’s Day? What about NASCAR drivers in bright cars? Do they all not look professional either?

Other than the vocal minority of Apple fans I’ve never heard anyone complain about something not looking professional just because of color. It’s absurd and laughable, honestly.
This.

Everyone is in a rush to buy an ARM Mac that they are willing to buy the entry level designs without taking a moment of pause to remember that the transition period is 2 years not 2 seconds. The machine you want ISN'T the first machines that are introduced... unless you actually are in the market for the most basic level computing device there is to buy.

Get a grip people. Your fussing over something that isn't even what you want. Put the wallet down, get a drink and enjoy your weekend.

While Steve Jobs may have introduced an all-black lineup at some point... this new Apple surely will not. How sic would a jet black Mac be... really, it would have been glorious.

I personally am not a fan of Space Gray. It looks too dark. I think color it’s just whatever is popular. At one point if a computer wasn’t beige it was unacceptable to be in an office. Now you can’t find a beige computer. I guess it would depend on the setting but I couldn’t see anything wrong with it one of these colorful iMacs in an office. The only exception I would say is maybe a lawyers office because they have to be super serious so space gray is the only color acceptable 😂

To be fair is because the new Apple silicon Macs are so powerful that even the base models are capable of doing a lot more. The MacBook Air is a good example. It was a very tiny and light computer but super weak when it comes to performance. Now it’s a powerhouse. Of course like you said it’s still the base model and we haven’t seen what’s next. I think in WWDC we will see something else. I bought the iMac because I need a home computer for general use. I’m definitely going to buy the “Pro” MacBook Pro when it comes out

I think I'm reasonably wise, as people go, but even I wouldn't think I'm competent to speak on behalf of all the folk buying M1 iMacs right now. I'm inclined to believe that each person is making a choice based on their own needs, rather than on your thoughts.

I don't know about anyone else, and honestly, they can speak for themselves, but to respond to your point specifically, what I want, is for other people to stop thinking they know better about my choices than I do.

I do know however, that whatever it is that you seem to think I want, isn't it. At all.

I bought this iMac because I've been in the market for an iMac for a while and don't need the most powerful thing in the world. This iMac is now my daily driver. if I need anything more powerful I have a gaming rig that will suffice.

I think you have missed the point of who these entry level iMacs are targeted at. These are not targeted at Professional Users. Apple is differentiating its product line. These are being targeted at casual home users. The reason the bezels are white as most people have light coloured walls in their homes, and therefore will blend into the background more, a dark bezel would make the iMac look more out of place in most people’s homes.

I get that these are not right for you, or the many people that would post on a mac rumours forum, but that does not mean that these will not fly off the shelf to those people that these are targeted at.

If you want a professional iMac you need to wait a little longer for the next gen Apple silicon large screen iMac.
The display is still black when it's off, so not sure thin white bezels make it blend in -- if anything it'll stand out more. If it's truly to blend in like an appliance, most people seem to get stainless/black appliances now anyways. I don't recall anyone complaining of the iMac or MacBooks looking "out of place" for the last decade.

Being in retail I can tell you after talking with people about their needs and wants many overestimate or underestimate what they need. And it isn’t unusual to have people come in and expect to get something high powered and pay next to nothing for it. They have a totally screwed up sense of value.

Then there are those who think all tech is the same and greed is the only reason something costs more.

The best that can be done is to ascertain their needs and make recommendations to suit their needs and budget. But I certainly won’t sugarcoat something dirt cheap as being up to the task of running NASA or role playing games. I will plainly tell them, if I understood them correctly, that something cheaply priced will not do what they want. On the flip side I could also tell them something they might be looking at is overkill for what they claim to want to do.

Everyone drools over iPad Pros, but few regular users need to get into that price tier to satisfy their needs. With the M1 the MacBook Air makes the Pro pretty much pointless unless you just like the looks the Pro that much better. Presently few people need to upgrade to the Pro.

The MacBook Pro has a brighter display and a better battery life. These are for many people reasons enough to go Pro.

As if your opinion on the styling is any more "objective"? :p

Most of the reviewers I've seen and the top comments below them wish for black bezels and some non-pastel colors -- they're all excited at the color of the body then kind of "oh, huh" at the chin pastel finish (you know, the part you actually see on a desktop). It'd be nice if even just 1 of the 7 colors had it (likely the silver) to appease people, but instead for many people, not a single color option appeals.

The issue with the chin is largely that it's completely unbranded and looks generic (which is objective since that's what generic means), along with having a pastel version of the color that neither matches the body nor the stand nor the peripherals (again, objectively, they do not match). I love the body colors but alas, counter to some views here, Apple has remained very conservative with the chin colors, opting for the least offensive pastels or "baby" colors. Nothing daring about it.

PS, not really any worse to be writing about Apple's design choices on an Apple forum than complaining about people who voice opinions counter to yours... a bit hypocritical to say the least. But alas it sounds like you work for Apple so perhaps there is a conflict of interest here that would explain some things. ;)

We have been seeing the same iMac for so many years that we are now shocked to see a redesign, even though we have been waiting for it for years.

I liked it live, I saw it in blue. The bezels and the light blue gives "relax" when looking at it. It does not seem to me, a priori something negative.

I think the colors give people the possibility to match their desktop to their personality, as you do with the iPhone or the iPad (Air). Apple is differentiating the "consumer" and "professional" ranges and design is one of the main elements.

Years ago, Apple was giving color to their equipment, with gold, rose gold, approaching a different audience. With the Xr was the first approach to the colors that we are seeing today in many more Apple devices.

It is true that perhaps a more discreet or "less colorful" option is missing, such as silver with black frames or space gray with a black frame. But that will be reserved for the "Pro" or larger, more serious versions, more focused on the "professional" public. But I think the silver is a good choice for those people who do not want color, even if the frame is white, I do not think it will bother, since it is a product for the "home".

I don't think it's not business oriented either. Wouldn't a yellow or blue iMac fit in a store where yellow is the predominant color, or would a blue iMac not fit in an office with a blue corporate color? I do think it would look great.

I think the work Apple is going to do with Macs is going to be very important, and they are going to sell more than ever, because not only your Watch or your iPhone has to show how you are, your home also shows how you are, why not the computer you have in your living room, office, or kitchen?

The new color MacBook Air, with white bezels, will sell even more.

The MacBook Pro, large iMac or "Pro" and Mac Mini "Pro and Mac Pro will have more serious, neutral colors, for those who need more power and/or "sober equipment".

Domestic version, hence the colours. Same with the iPad Air colours vs the pro.

No, I don’t work for Apple and never have. I work for Staples in Canada. I use Apple products for myself and I can explain the advantages and disadvantages of Apple over PC. I sell a lot of PCs that suit the needs of people who want them. I don’t try to persuade people to consider Apple UNLESS they express interest or curiosity with Apple then I explain the differences and what they can expect. Otherwise Apple often goes unmentioned. I sell more PCs than Macs because thats what most people are familiar with.

Thank you for clearing that up. It sounded like you worked in the Apple stores, is all. Honestly, for so many consumers, pretty much any modern computer works. It's just a platform to run their software, which is often just web browsers and office suites. The price and form factor (screen, battery life, weight) is really what seems to make the choice for many such general users.

Nobody has to justify getting or not getting one of the new iMacs. Each person buys the Mac that he or she believes will meet the needs. It doesn't matter what other strangers think. It is rather foolish to argue page after page about why you aren't buying one while another member is.

If you hate the new design, that is fine. Stating the same thing over and over isn't going to change what is. Save your money for another Apple toy that you like. Problem solved.

And one last thing, stop trying to denigrate those who bought the new iMac. There is nothing wrong with the new iMac. Just because it doesn't meet some mythical subjective pro status for some of you, that doesn't mean it is a crappy machine to be shunned.

For the record while there are some who don’t really seem to care much about how a piece of tech looks a machine’s aesthetics can play a role in the decision making process. As humans we do respond to things we find pleasing to the eye and touch. Manufacturers vary in offering cheap looking hunks of plastic with some keys on it and something with a bit more thought in making the plastic look more pleasing. But overwhelmingly the vast majority of PCs on the market are very lowkey and sombre looking.

I do wonder what will happen if the forthcoming bigger iMac also has a white bezel, a chin and doesn’t come in Space Gray as so many are praying for or are so absolutely certain is going to happen.

The display is still black when it's off, so not sure thin white bezels make it blend in...

Last I checked, when the computer is off, nobody is sitting at it to much notice.

I will say, however, that I do notice the black edges around the screens of my 27-inch iMacs when I'm using them, and it is a little distracting. The 'white', actually, grey, bezels of the new iMac do in practice help focus on what I'm working on, and it 'feels' like the screen is larger because it lacks boundaries. It is subjective, but nevertheless, valid.

When the 27-inch iMacs are off, they look great. Very techie. But it isn't as if they were bought to admire when not in use.

I'm warming up to the design the more I see it in a natural setting. The bezel isn't perfect, but it's completely usable. If I was in the market for a desktop I would choose the Green iMac in a heartbeat.

Maybe I'm nostalgic for the Bondi Blue G3, but I believe Green is the best color followed by Orange.
