How about something like this? Rather than having the chin at the bottom you could put the display closer to the vertical center, more like the iPhone:

I like it, now if only they could put a 'home' button on the bottom near the iMac label to turn the iMac on, wake it up or get back to the home screen :D

Well just kidding, of course... but this is how I'd like them to look like. :D

  • All glass+black front, down to the chin.
  • Significantly shorter chin.
  • 'iMac' instead of Apple logo at the front.
  • Completely flat back.
  • Thicker than 2011 iMac when measured from the edges, but thinner from the center.
  • Ports (for 21.5 inch model): 1x Audio line out, 1x Audio line in, 1x HDMI, 3x USB 3.0, 1x FireWire 800, 2x Thunderbolt, 1x Gigabit Ethernet
  • UPDATE: Camera on top vertically centered.
  • UPDATE: Also available in white.

I've never liked the curved back. And yeah, I still need the optical drive. I also noticed that most people (including me) like to have the word 'iMac' on their iMacs. One apple logo at the back is enough, right? No chin is also fine with me as long as there's the 'iMac' word to differentiate from the Thunderbolt Display.

Retina or not, I don't really care for now.

Thanks for looking! :D

I want a completely white chin like we have now plus a white rim. As for the square back i don't like it. The curves feel and look much better.

Cool mockups everyone! I do seem to like the curved back better than the flat one. Also would like some version that is lighter as I do roll mine into position over the bed every time I lounge to use it. Back is much happier this way. Part of the reason I'm waiting is to see how heavy the next 21.5 inch version is. If too heavy I may have to switch to a mini. I also would really like the USB3 and an HDMI. We shall see when ever it gets here.

Of course Apple would never revert back to this design, but if we could get an iMac that looked like the 30" ACD

the white one looks really nice, maybe they could do a white metal or ceramic version lol

i like this.
  • maybe add 4-6x USB ports at the back,
  • 2x HDMI,
  • and also maybe something to change it's height and also to make it spin 360 degrees without moving the base :D.
  • Definatly keep the optical drive too
as for the iMac being that slightly thinner, i would totally get on board with this. means more room for graphics (maybe even desktop graphics!), more slots for RAM, more powerful processors (xeons maybe? :D), and last of all, a place for the power button at the side, so i dont have to reach my hand all the way behind the iMac too :D.

then what about the keyboard and mouse/trackpad?
  • MICE - i would love to see a slightly larger trackpad and a less shallow magic mouse, which has more built-in gestures on it
  • THE KEYBOARD - would love to see a numerical keypad added as standard, with BTO options for it to be backlit too, with setting like that of the macbook pro/air. also, the keyboard should be the colour of the iMac - so for example, if you ordered a white iMac, you will get a white keyboard (or the classic one w/numerical keypad), if you ordered a black one, then you will get a black keyboard similar to the one of the macbook pro/air :p.

If the optical drive is dropped, I am not buying it. :p

Also, I prefer aluminium to glass, as it is better for heat distribution and is also more durable and recyclable. The Apple logo at the bottom also doubles as a infra red receiver and also polishes off the design nicely. I like the curved back and I think the thicker flat panels of the iPhone 4 and 4S are not as good.

They say the iPhone 5 will have a curvier back you know.

HDMI, USB 3.0, Dual Thunderbolt and spec bumps would be great.

I hope 512GB SSD comes as standard, but it's not likely. A retina iMac would be cool, and that's probably why Apple didn't update the iMac this July, since they are developing the Retina display, and any updates would turn out a disappointment like the Mac Pro.

A bigger cooling port would just be stupid as the current one is fine, and nobody can get their finger caught in it.

I do not want the iMac to be thicker than it is already.

8GB standard RAM would be awesome, as well as a 1TB drive on the base model.

I hope they continue to use AMD graphics as well, because I don't like NVIDIA ones.

The 'chin' is also the part of the iMac that balances off the whole design, and a centred display would just look out of place.

The glossy white one looks oh so beautiful. I'd definitely order one. I think I agree with the poster saying to center the screen like the iPhone. Also, for me though, I hope they drop the ODD and make it a bit thinner, but overall, great job.

Why?? the iMac is not meant to be portable, so who cares if it includes the weight of a optical drive

Why? Because the future is disc-free and Apple has always been about the future. Because Apple would rather you sell / rent you music / movies than have you buy it on a disc. Because Apple dislikes design excess in any regard. Dropping the optical drive, as they have with the Air and the Retina Pro, means less cost, less weight, less power usage, one less thing that can break that needs support. And it means a slimmer design, more room for cooling, etc.
