Why wouldn’t they remove all other than just one tb3 and sell you dongles? If they did that with mbp, why not with mini?

Because the MBP is a portable so the design mantra is as thin and light as possible and USB-C /TB3 allows that. The Mini is not a portable (even if it may be easy to tote around).

They could have made the mid-2017 iMac all USB-C / TB3 - heck, I fully expected them to. And yet all they did was swap the two TB2 ports for two USB-C/TB3 ports and left everything else unchanged.

They should merge the Mac Mini and AppleTV lines. I don't think that the Mini ATV, call it the "MacTV" maybe? would be that much larger than the current ATV . Many Mini's are used as media servers anyway, so why not merge them?

Because Apple doesn't want you to have a local media server. The Apple TV is basically a terminal that allows you to pay for access to media on Apple's servers. Just look at the front page story: https://www.macrumors.com/2018/03/22/apple-services-revenue-growth-apple/ "Apple's services revenue is growing at a rapid pace and is on track to be the company's primary revenue driver in the future"

Is the supposed modular Mac in anyway related to a new Mac Mini or is it gonna be some kind of separate desktop box/cylinder?

Intel NUC7i7DNHE - just a few days left to wait until it hits the shops, so in a way the re-incarnated non-Apple Mac Mini 2018 is almost here, and I'm pretty certain that its specs/price will make an ideal reference point for the updated Apple Mac Mini 2018 (2019, 2020...), anyway at the moment it's hard for me to imagine a better match.

Two things: Half-life 3 and Mac Mini 2018. I believe... not!

I don't think so. Those have 4C/8T but are otherwise stripped down. No TB3, not even USB-C. Need to wait until Q3 for "Bean Canyon" NUC8i3BEH/K, NUC8i5BEH/K, and NUC8i7BEH. But even those are single TB3.

Does the next mini need more than one TB3 port?

I was citing the photo for God's sake. That's all.
Didn't mean to offend. I'm just sad that Apple will never offer this to us, even it's already engineered.

I'd like to connect 3 displays, thank you!

That does get messy.
The NUC7i7DNHE has 2 HDMI 2.0 ports. Could add 3rd monitor via USB3 dongle if speed is not a concern.
High power NUCs should have 2 HDMI and 2 TB3.
Bean Canyon show 1 HDMI and 1 TB3. There are docks and adapters to use 2 monitors on a single TB3 port.

There's no link as far as we know. Logically, the Modular Mac Pro should come with an option without a discrete GPU as external GPUs might be unnecessary if you're a programmer or musician on a budget.

For me, that's where a Mini could come in but of course price and spec will be an issue.
