And get rid of the microsoft office....Just saying you obtain that through ways I will not specify as I don't feel like coming back to this post and seeing giant red mod letters blocking it out.

why do you promote piracy. you buy a laptop that cost over $1k, but can't spend the 100 bucks to get a legit copy of office.

You should try a bigger display.

Being able to display two documents side by side is invaluable. A small display might be fine for a novelist, but anyone who does research and works from sources can benefit from a big screen.

Those great academics you are referring to all had case books and journals sitting open next to their typewriters. I, for one, no longer use books for any sort of research, everything is on my computer.

The 1440x900 display on the 13" MBA barely allows me to be productive, the 1280x800 display on the MBP is just not good enough. Whenever I need to get any real work done I use my 1920x1080 desktop(and I wish I could afford the 2560x1440 iMac display).

Thanks for this, and I do completely understand what you're saying. I have, in fact, tried external displays several times over the last few years (both Apple and Dell varieties) and external mouse/keyboard combos (ibid), and I just can't make it stick. I've always used a laptop, and that is now so ingrained it just feels weird to use a desktop setup. I know there's more space, and it is nice to have email, word processor and papers all in view simultaneously, but I actually find that possibility distracting in practice.

It's the Writeroom, full-screen mentality, but applied to the hardware. I have one fairly small screen, and my word processor is on it. I turn on email at specific points in the day, so I don't waste too much time on it, and get distracted by the constant new ones. I do my research (Devonthink, etc), and I do print off journals, and have books spread out across my (ridiculously large) desk next to the MacBook. I know this is all old-school, but it's just the way I seem to work best. I don't pretend to think it's the best way, but it's the best way that works for me.
