Most of the discussion about the new notch has been either for or against however I'm seeing little discussion on how oversized the thing is. Bear in mind it only has to contain a webcam, light indicator and ambient light sensor and the rest is just empty black space sat in your screen.

The iPhone manages to pack in way more sensors into a smaller notch, never mind the additional bezel you've also got to use on the MacBook. Based on the technology it houses the notch should be much smaller.

Clearly Apple should fire their current engineers and hire you.

A decent camera requires a decent lens which requires a certain minimum amount of space. In the iphone they have much more depth to work with. In a laptop they make up for lack of depth by spreading out the components that can’t be stacked.

Interesting claim. Teardown will clear things up.

Yes!

The new screen is 4 mm thick vs 7.6 mm thick of iPhone 13. So it's not that simple, there is no depth to fit all the stuffs.

Boggles the mind how many people think they know more than engineers paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Boggles my mind even more that these people have such a low amount of knowledge that they think that comparing 2 completely different devices with massively different thicknesses is a fair comparison.

I think it's a future-proofed design for FaceID inclusion. Why incur the cost and logistics of redesigning the panel in a couple years?

If we don't get FaceID with this design then I agree, it seems larger than necessary. But, as others have mentioned: That's a pretty thin lid they're working with. Maybe this is truly the best they could do.

Over-sized compared to what?

I don't know enough about other similarly-specced laptops to know what's possible, but I don't understand the constant comparisons to the iPhone and iPad as they're considerably thicker devices than a laptop screen which I'm guessing means you may have the option to stack components to take advantage of depth?

I believe that the notch is an intentional design choice, and not an insurmountable engineering issue. Whether you like the notch or not is another issue.

Typically I keep a laptop 2-3 rev cycles and so don't option up much, but I intentionally went w/ the base 14" in hopes that this is minimized in the next revision or two.

What I wonder. Which competitor is going to rip Apple for the notch in an ad? Then release their own notched laptop a year later.

My thoughts exactly.

However, I do understand that the second one looks like a 'mistake' and the first one is more, I don't want to say it, courageous. It makes their products easily recognizable (for better or worse)

I agree the second one looks like a mistake. Maybe it’s somewhere in between?
