What's with the derogatory comment. It's pretty obvious that space is at a premium, and that lenses need a fair amount of it. One only has to look at the iPhones in recent years, as the protrusions get bigger.
No protrusion for the FaceTime (front) camera so far…

Clearly Apple should fire their current engineers and hire you.

A decent camera requires a decent lens which requires a certain minimum amount of space. In the iphone they have much more depth to work with. In a laptop they make up for lack of depth by spreading out the components that can’t be stacked.
I was wondering about this, and it makes sense — considering how much thinner the space is they have to work with.

Forget the notch. Why is the bottom "chin" under display so thick?

When I heard that they were removing the 'MacBook Pro' branding from the chin, I thought this meant that the chin was going away or would be reduced in size, and would match the other bezels. Since it's still there, the lack of branding actually brings more attention to that blank space since it's not an extension of the display, as it is not glass, but aluminum. And I personally prefer the MacBook Pro branding - it kind of tops the design off with a signature.

I still don't know what they were thinking by leaving the Apple logo off of the iMac's chin. It would have complimented the design nicely, especially if they would have used the contrasting color of the iMac for the logo. It just kind of ruined the design and makes it look so generic. Almost no one will ever see the gigantic Apple Logo behind the machine. It just looks so unfinished, like an OEM device made for the masses that companies can slap their own logos on. But, that's a different convo/thread.

The new screen is 4 mm thick vs 7.6 mm thick of iPhone 13. So it's not that simple, there is no depth to fit all the stuffs.
The iPad Pro 11 inch is 5.9mm thick. And it have thicker screen and thicker back for structural integrity. Unless you have a measurement of the actual Face ID part, there is nothing technically stopping Face ID from fitting in the screen.
Face ID is practically windows bellow but with dot projection for added security and depth.

perhaps the screen just need to be 4-5mm thick

I thought it could've been a little bit more rounded. The corner radiuses are a bit sharp for my liking. I wish they would've used the same radius as the corners of the screen.

Those users don't need the MacBook Pro, just a standard MacBook would be fine... or an iMac an iPad or iPhone. A $6000 computer with 58 cores seems a little excessive for Zoom calls.

But people want to buy their $6000 Macbook Pro for light internet browsing, excel, word and Zoom calls! The notched display with 1080p camera is essential! How on earth can someone do business without it?

The reality is that the notch is big enough for everything else they intend to put in subsequent models without needing to change the size.
This is the bottomline yes. They weren't going to change the design on an annual basis.

I think they will eventually slim Face ID to fit into the thin screen. At that point they will not want to enlarge the notch as it would look bad (making it bigger!). So may as well make it wide enough to potentially fit in Face ID at a later date, and eat any backlash now.

Most of the discussion about the new notch has been either for or against however I'm seeing little discussion on how oversized the thing is. Bear in mind it only has to contain a webcam, light indicator and ambient light sensor and the rest is just empty black space sat in your screen.

The iPhone manages to pack in way more sensors into a smaller notch, never mind the additional bezel you've also got to use on the MacBook. Based on the technology it houses the notch should be much smaller.

Even very cheap Android phone has small hole camera on screen now, Apple can do that too, just somehow the management likes notch.
