Rift, Aion, EQ, EQII... I'm sure all of those have over 35k subscribers.

I know rift is doing well. A lot of people came back from SWTOR because it was such a let down.

I am quite happy with that really, as long as the items dont give you an in game advantage then fair enough. I would buy stuff from the WoW pet/mount store if I didnt also have to pay a sub, but paying a sub AND having microtransactions sucks.

Signed up for the GW2 beta so I hope to get in and see what the game is like!

I think the free models with micro transactions as a rule don't do subscriptions too. They would annoy me too, course I guess it would depend on how overboard they go with it... 😉

I'm one of those let down by SWTOR. It's a quality game, lots of time and money invested, for me it's just lacking that special feeling of the Star Wars Universe. SW is too special to be invaded by a bunch of dufus players, lol. 😉

Since Cata, it's never been as exciting as it was before. I do like some of the changes, but overall I miss a lot of the old stuff. (though it's still there, nobody plays the old stuff....like Wintergrasp)

I am hoping things change in the Panda expansion.

I actually deleted my battlenet account which in turn removed all my wow accounts permanently. Oddly one character remains on the Armory probably because it was in a guild.

Regarding Planetside2, I forgot to mention that my April 2012 PC Gamer included a priority beta access code. On the cover is a Planetside soldier leaping and a red circle saying "Get Priority Beta Access, Key Inside."

There is a key difference between beta testing a MMORPG like GW2, where you are developing a character and it's progress gets wiped a couple of times and beta testing a MMOFPS, where it's primarily team fighting. The latter is impacted much less by character wipes. My point is PS2 is perfect for beta testing and fully enjoying the game, where as in a MMORPG it could be somewhat frustrating repeating questing content.

I can always make a new bnet account. I did it because that was the only way to remove my cc information from the account. They would not remove it any other way so I wrote their privacy group and told them to do it.

Anybody else waiting for The Secret World?

It's made by Funcom, a company known for 3 things
1) Anarchy Online - one of the best MMO's of all time that also had the worst launch of all time
2) Age of Conan - recent MMO that I thought was boring
3) The Longest Journey/Dreamfall - two of the best adventure games created in the past 20 years

If they can pull off another Anarchy Online, it'll be good. TSW looks like a themepark MMO with a few big sandbox elements:
- No classes. You can use whatever skill you want, whenever you want.
- Complex crafting. The crafting system looks a lot like Minecraft. It's a throwback to the old MMO days where you did crafting because it was fun, not like now where crafting is repetitive and boring and games like SWTOR decided to have NPC's do crafting for you because it's so boring
- Player (guild) housing. Another MMO element that disappeared because of WoW. Glad somebody put it back.

Time will tell. Unless you are thinking of some aspect specifically, I see no reason why it would have less replayability then any MMO.

Yup. I still rarely log on to my AO accounts. I'll give TSW a shot. I never touched AoC, but mostly due to not having a computer that could run it. I actually can't run TSW either, but I'm getting a new computer this year to sort that out.

It's supposed to be a modern day setting with flashbacks to ancient history or something like that. And the modern day is plagued by mythical occurences kinda like the X-Files.

Yeah I just upgraded my windows PC so I figure I'd give some of these next gen MMO's a shot. I really wanted Funcom to put out the graphics update for AO - that would've drawn me back, but I don't think that's ever gonna happen.

TSW, GW2, Planetside 2, and whatever Blizzard is working on - those are the MMO's I'm looking forward to. What I really want though is for some company to put out a big budget sandbox. I wish Raph Koster was still doing work.

Okay, I hate to be that guy...but I'm gonna I suppose.

My GF and I like to play Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 on XBox 360 - split screen, because I only have one. I do however have multiple Macs, and thought we could each play something similar online as a team, or with a team on the macs. I've done some searching, and this is honestly the only place I really trust for some good advice.

1. Is there something similar for the mac that is a free game, or that has a decent trial (long enough to learn the controls and get accustomed to it before having to commit to buy it)?
Let me clarify that I don't consider Modern Warfare similar...it is more of a mele where RB6 can actually utilize some tactics.

2. Would any of you suggest a good MMORPG that isn't
a. Gruesome...she won't play it if it is.
b. tedious with lots of getting from place to place, and not much action.
c. has a good beginner level where you won't just constantly get slammed by advanced players.
d. and again free, or at least has a decent full demo time as stated above.

Not wild about Subscription, would rather just buy something and play....but if subscription is the only way, then I'll be open minded as long as I can try it first.

To sum up...we just want to shoot bad guys, blow stuff up, and chill a bit. Don't want to die and respawn constantly, nor have to figure out riddles all the time to get to some other place so that we can solve another riddle. This is our relaxation time, and killing stuff is fun...in virtual land.

Not an MMO (neither is Rainbow 6), but maybe Unreal Tournament? There are versions available that play on different MacOSX versions. It's just a shooter though. No quests, but you can load in bots to play against.

As far as MMORPGS, Mac native versions are limited and the most prominent Mac native, World of Warcraft has a subscription. I could see Guild Wars 2, no subscription, but no Mac native version. You'd need to install Windows via bootcamp for that game.

didn't City of Heroes go free to play? Traveling can get a bit tiresome in early levels, but that doesn't last too long, when finally you start flying, or super jumping or super speed running around. Tons of guys to beat up and such... high level players aren't a bother, because in it, like most MMORPGs, Player vs Player is only in certain areas, not most areas... you can play the whole game without having to play vs other players if you choose.

Its really fun to design out and play your own super hero(ine)!

I guess MMO was a bad term for RB6...but we like to play as a team against the computer...so I guess that's where the bots come in.

Blizzard's next MMO or Next-Gen MMO as referred by Blizzard, has been in the shadow for years, the first evidence of its existence was a job ad listing in Blizzard's site mid of 2007. Since then, through official sources here is what we know about Blizzard's top secret MMO:

• It is internally named Titan[1].
• It's not going to be a WoW expansion.
• It will be based on a brand new IP (new story & lore).
• Several people of the WoW team have joined Next Gen MMO's team.
• This MMO targets to a broader audience than WoW.
• Clues from job ads indicate that it will be a Science Fiction/Sci Fi MMO. In the past Kaplan, who revealed he is involved in the project, was asked if the game's genre would be science fiction, post-apocalyptic, or historical, and while laughing he responded: "all of those combined!" [2]

GRANDEST RUMORS:

• Titan going F2P?
• Blizzard's "Titan" on console? There have been conversations about this matter after Blizzard hired some of the greatest console game developers some time ago.
• Real Money Auction House( RMAH )This feature, which will be introduced in Diablo 3, if it works as intended is highly likely to exist in "Titan" too. (Unconfirmed)
• Time Traveling. Rumor has it that time traveling will be possible within the game (Unconfirmed)
• A Recent Job listing led to the speculation that Titan will feature in-game Ads of some sort (Almost certain)

FACT: Rob Pardo clearly said on BlizzCon interview that the game is playable internally but far from ready for announcement and it probably won't be announced even next year[4].

I'm enjoying WoW for now and expect I'll have plenty of fun leveling up a Horde Panda Monk, etc.

I'm looking forward to Titan too and will probably still be playing WoW when it comes out. We shall see.

In the meantime, The Elder Scrolls Online may or may not turn out well. I will be watching this one with interest.

I'd like to spend some time on Warhammer Online too, just to check it out. Unfortunately, there must be some reason it did not do better which is a real shame but we'll see. It's free to see the first 10 levels with a variety of classes so hard to go wrong there.

If you are interested in Warhammer Online, you should definitely check out Guild Wars 2. It takes many of the best elements of Warhammer Online and implements them in a proper way.

For me, Guild Wars 2 is clearly the next big MMO, simply because it does not follow the classical WoW formula like everybody else, instead taking risks and trying to do something new in regard to content delivery. Also, GW2 is probably the first 'true' social MMO, because it encourages and rewards players for help each other, without requiring them to form groups or other time-consuming nonsense. There is no kill-stealing and no ninja-looting in the game. And its difficulty level is reasonably high even for casual content, in contrast to current Blizzard face-roll games. Also, the PvP is excellent.

I am very sceptical about The Elder Scrolls Online because Bethesda never could deliver a good, balanced and engaging RPG system, which is of absolute importance in a MMO. I don't see them making an interesting MMO.

I probably won't buy another Blizzard game for a while. I am very disappointed about the general design of WoW and Diablo 3 was basically another nail in the coffin (as far as my interest in Blizzard goes). Blizzard seems to prioritise mind-numbing grind and cheap psychological conditioning in their games. I used to like their games, but they have become too greedy. Their technical execution is top-notch, of course, as always.
