When will the next iMac update be?

So... why does everybody else seem to think it won't happen for several months? Are they making an analysis based on anything, or is it just a gut reaction? Or maybe they just bought their own iMacs, and don't want the updates to come too fast? ;)

Guys?

Mobile Penryn in the iMac?

They just got updated, that's why. You are going to be waiting forever for a new revision to come out. When they finally do come out, they will have problems early on and you will be stuck having a bad experience because of it. Get the current iMac and enjoy your life.

Ok, that is fine... and if that is the case, I completely agree that buying now would be the best choice, and I would be 100% happy. All I am trying to do is to make sure that before I go spend $2300 for an iMac, that I have done my research, and a new one with a faster processor and faster graphics card (two things that are very important to me) doesn't come out within a couple of weeks after I bought mine!

I am attempting to determine if the next update will come out in the next couple of months or not. If it will, I will just wait. I am patient. If not, then I will just get it now. Either way, It will be great.

YOU said "they just got updated", whis is patently false. They were updated One hundred and forty three days ago! The average number of days between updates is 185 days. That is only one month from now (a bit more)!!! If updates are coming that soon, I would be dumb to buy now.

YOU said "You are going to be waiting forever for a new revision to come out." Do you have some sort of inside information? I am not trying to be a jerk here... I really hope you do. If you have a good idea when the update will come... please tellme.

YOU said "When they finally do come out, they will have problems early on and you will be stuck having a bad experience because of it." Why now, is that? How will a simple processor or graphics card update reduce the dependability of the machine? Especially since most of the problems with the current iMacs have been with the screen and graphics cards. If anything, many of the kinks which are uncorrelated to the processor and graphics cards should be more worked out.

YOU said "Get the current iMac and enjoy your life." I plan on getting one in the next 2 months... and doing just that. But before I make such a large investment, which will likely last me around 4-5 years, I would like to make sure that I am making the best possible decision for ME.

Thanks for you input!

Wait for MacWorld at least.

Otherwise my feeling is late-April to May.

Probably a good idea. I think that is what I will do. I will wait until Macworld, if nothing is announced... I will order my new iMac as soon as possible.

My luck though... the Penryn iMacs will come a couple of weeks later. :) Hahaha, I guess there is no way to know for sure.

I am also waiting until MacWorld to buy an iMac.

I really think that they will announce that they are putting the mobile Penryns it it, but that it won't ship until March. Why... because I think it will take them longer than a couple weeks to get them ready to be put in the iMac. If the mobile processors don't get released until January 6th, I don't think from then until January 15th is enough time.

The Intel Core Duo was launched at CES a few week(s) before MacWorld 2006. Apple was shipping the iMac Core Duo the same day.

Macbook Pros and iMacs are both going to go to Penryn by the end of February. It's just a simple processor swap.

My guess is that the MBP will get it around MWSF (probably not during the keynote because they don't waste time with simple upgrades), and the iMac a few weeks later. It's possible that they would both be updated at the same time, though.

Macbook will go to Penryn sometime around May keeping with the May-November refresh cycle, and the Mini will go to SR (keeping Merom) around this time too.

After that, Intel will be releasing the Montevina platform in the summer, which the MBP will get, followed shortly later by the iMac. The Macbook will get Montevina in November and sometime around then the Mini will get Penryn. (Apple always keeps the Mini one revision behind to keep its costs down)

This seems to make a lot of sense to me.

Do the rest of you disagree with this? Why?

I slightly disagree. Mac Pro & MacBook Pro will go Penryn by February. Then the iMac/MacBooks get it next between April and June (My guess iMac in April and MacBook in June) in time for Back To School. Then...

....I'd agree with this part

Nice discussion- its gives us shopping for new iMacs some hope.

If CES has penryn, then maybe Apple will have them too. But either way- I will wait until after MWSF to buy, just to be sure.

I agree, its a simple swap of components. They can easily pop in an updated processor and vid card. Their design is great and was the major revamp. Components are much easier to introduce. I feel there will be an upgrade sooner than most believe and i'm gonna wait it out before i buy my first Mac.

Intel will release its new chips and there has been a large outcry about the half-ass vid card the IMAC's currently use. I'm sure Apple is aware of this and would love to mention this at the new Expo coming up mid Jan.

As far as keeping pace with the releaes of new Intel chips, yes i believe that will speed up changes to Mac's across the board. Just like with Dell etc. How can they not if better processors are being released more frequently. I don't think they want to hear the uproar everytime something new comes out and they are slow to adapt.

Cheers.

I hope you're right!!! I'm buying an iMac right after MacWorld unless they say that it will be releasing on [insert date].

Love to see a desighn like the G4

While it was a beautiful and very practical design, it was flawed in that the base had to be fairly heavy to keep the screen anchored down. Maybe Apple could come up with another way to give freedom to move the screen, but I doubt a redesign is coming anytime soon with the aluminium design being quite recent.

And of course the 'footprint' of the current iMac is considerably smaller.

My friend got the iMac G4 when it first came out and I loved it. The freedom to move the screen around was amazing. I agree, it was really heavy, but what are people doing with their desktop computer that the weight (as long as it's not over 50 pounds or something) really matters?

While I think it will be sometime soon before Apple releases an updated iMac, I believe the current design will stay for quite sometime. It was 3 years before they updated the iMac G5/Core Duo design into something new (not counting the iSight revision iMac G5; the basic design stayed the same) so it will probably be another 2-3 years before Apple updates the design again. The time line with the iMac has gone like this:

Original iMac (May 1998-October 1999)
Slot Loading iMac (October 1999-March 2003)
iMac G4 (January 2002-July 2004)
iMac G5/Core Duo (August 2004-August 2007)
Aluminum iMac (August 2007-???)

The tray-loading iMac had the shortest lifespan, but the slot loading model was still a G3, a design that lasted for almost 4 years. The G4 had the least life of any model, due to slow sales and high prices. The G5 design has been the most successful (I'm not sure of sales compared to G3, but it has been just as or even more so), so Apple didn't tinker with it much this time when introducing the Aluminum models. I think it will be awhile before this form factor changes...
