4th iPhone = iPhone 4.
5th iPhone = "iPhone 5" (yet to be determined).

People saying the next iPhone will be the iPhone 4S are also assuming the iPhone after the iPhone 4S will be the "real" iPhone 5. Wrong. That's the iPhone 6. There's no way Apple would ever name the 6th iPhone "iPhone 5".

I see what you're saying, but are you saying the 3GS was just made to balance it out?
No. I wasn't saying anything about the 3GS at all.

The 3GS isn't called iPhone 3 because it resembles the name "iPhone 3G" too much. It's like calling the next Xbox the "Xbox 36". Not very smart.

It is indeed iPhone 5 if you count it out of the number of iPhones released. But what Apple will call it is another case. So we will wait and see  I think they are gonna call it the iPhone 5 though :p

Well it may be the 6th iPhone, but it can still be the iPhone 5 as in iPhone model 5..

3GS ran iOS 3
4 ran iOS 4
5 will run iOS 5

Why would iPhone 4S run iOS 5?
You could argue your point with the iPad, but still ...

Agreed, It will be an iPhone5 with a possible iPhone4S to replace the current iPhone4 but iPhone5 will be released.

I think we've all come to agreement that the next iPhone will be called the "5". When people refer to it as just being a "4s", they are saying they think it's just a spec bumped phone instead of a completely redesigned device

Yeah I get that, but that makes things even more confusing. I don't get what's wrong with using something in the likes of "the next iPhone".

How would this scenario play out...Apple has a press event where they announce one device...the new flagship iPhone 5. And then for whatever reason, 3 months later they announce a slightly modified, lower priced iPhone that closely resembles the form factor of the iPhone 4. What would they call it then? Certainly not "iPhone 6".

Honestly, No one really cares what it's called. And quite frankly, iPhone 4 was the only iPhone named because of it's numerical place in the iPhone lineup. The terms "4s" & "iPhone 5" are terms that WE made up to differentiate between the 2. Nothing more. It just that those names stuck and will continue to stick until apple tells us different.

No matter what happens, if 2 "new" iPhones come out, I'd be willing to bet that neither will be named iPhone 6. And who cares?...to be honest, what the name of the phone will actually be has never even crossed my mind. Not even once. Now go outside and play. ;) JK.

I'm telling you, the 3G was the oddball iPhone name that confused people because it was the second gen iPhone being called the "3G". The 3GS was only introduced to get the naming sequence back on track for regular numerical lineage of the names for the succeeding iPhones. That's it. The next one will be called the iPhone 5.

Yes. This.
When they named it the 3G, it was due to the the technology of the phone, then with the 3GS they had to get it back on track to stop threads like this.
:D

True. But you can't name the iPhone 3G "iPhone 2" or something, that would imply it doesn't have 3G. I highly doubt the 3GS was only introduced to get the naming sequence back on track btw :p .

Um... if you are counting a slight bump or change (3Gs) as a version of phone (or for anything which had an official announcement at a keynote) this model could be the 9th or 10th iPhone depending on what order it's announced!

1 - iPhone 8GB (29th June 2007)
2 - iPhone 16GB (5th Feb 2008)
3 - iPhone 3G (11th July 2008)
4 - iPhone 3Gs 16GB & 32GB White & Black (19th June 2009)
5 - iPhone 3Gs 8GB Black (24th June 2010)
6 - iPhone 4 GSM Black 16GB & 32GB (24th June 2010)
7 - iPhone 4 CDMA Black 16GB & 32GB (10th Feb 2011)
8 - iPhone 4 CDMA & GSM White 16GB & 32GB (28th Apr 2011)
9 - iPhone 4s White/Black / 8GB/16GB/32GB (?)
10 - iPhone 5 White/Black / 16GB/32GB/64GB (?)

But if you are going with design revisions the upcoming iPhone would be the 4th Gen of design...

Take your pick what your basing these claims on.

Just my 2p!

This makes no sense at all. You're calling the biggest iPhone update yet (3G -> 3GS) only a slight bump  .

I think they'll call it the iPhone Galaxy S III. Just to stick another two fingers up :)

Please re-read with your glasses on, especially these lines;

The OP did not say what he was basing his 4th/5th iPhone on, design, specs or announcements. So I was showing that if they went on specs (be it small bump or radical change) it would be 9th or 10th but if going on announcement would be 7th or 8th potentially so could not see where he was getting this 4th/5th info from...

Unless you see something I am not? You certainly cannot use revisions as the argument against this as each model number for the items on my list were different so actually with 8GB/16GB/32GB and Black & White models you would be into nearly 20th model!!

The fifth iPhone will be called whatever Apple wants to call it. And from the announcement on that's what we'll all call it as well. No one calls the 3GS the iPhone 3. No one calls the iPhone 3G the iPhone 2.

Our speculations on naming conventions, no matter how rational, have no bearing on how we will be referring to the fifth iPhone in the future. It all depends on how Apple chooses to brand their next phone.
