As long as people expect Apple to come out with the phone that transforms into a car, walks their dog, fixes them breakfast, etc. It will never live up to the hype. Not saying that we have to lower our expectations either, but sometimes we do tend to get a little outrageous. I happen to think the 7 is an extremely complete phone as it took what was great about the 6S and made it even better with new improvements, I came from a 6 so the upgrade is very nice. But we shall see, it is the 10th anniversary, maybe they will come out with something spectacular

I'm inclined to agree. The trouble with rumours and wishes and expectations, as we all know, is that they tend to grow arms and legs and distort what is actually likely.
I also think the 7 is a fine phone, especially the Plus. No problem with them refining an already nice designs to make it even better.

That said, next year between the 10th anniversary and the panning they have taken from people and reviewers who seem to think a phone is only new if it looks different, I think they're going to pull something special out of the bag.

Of course, I'm often wrong :D

Is it too early to get sales of the 7?

I'm asking because if records are broken KNOWING the DESIGN HASN'T really CHANGED, it shows Apple doesn't really have to do anything crazy.

If this want't the 10th Anniversary, they could easily just do what they keep doing which is...

Spec Bump, improve the Camera, add Wireless Charging and of course introduce a NEW COLOR and it will sell.

Clearly the 7 DIDN'T CHANGE because they're focusing for next year.

So I was thinking about this after the iPhone 7 dropped and I am not so sure the next iPhone will live up to the leaked rumors. Let's review a few of the rumors that dropped to see if they still hold up.

1. AMOLED Screen. Now that the 7 dropped with reportedly the best screen ever on a smartphone, would Apple drop this to move on to another tech after one year? Doubtful.

2. TouchID built into the screen. Doubtful now that we have seen the new Home Button implementation this year.

3. Reduced Bezel. Doubtful as the Home Button is iconic.

I hope I am wrong and obviously this is speculation but I feel like we will see this same design next year as the 7S.

Thoughts?

The concept of the home button is iconic...but the button itself will go away (eventually).

If not in 2017, then the year after.

Amoled...I'm waiting with bated breath. But I wouldn't be too surprised if Apple rolls it out for the larger display as an exclusive for the first year.

And yes, if you were coming from a 6s/+...the ip7 might seem underwhelming.

Incremental improvements going forward every year, people. Remember that!

The design will definitely be changed. If you remember the keynote, in the video with Jony Ive, he mentions that this is the most refined form of this design. I'm pretty sure the design will be changed next year.

I'm waiting on a 7+ now but I originally had the Note 7. Being a long time iPhone user I can see Apple moving to a similar design. Physically its nice to hold and is very Apple-y in its feel. If Apple does anything similar to that design it'll sell like hotcakes. The software is what holds Samsung's back. the UI feel was nice but the lag that came with it was rough. iOS plus a design sliming like the Note 7 would make for an awesome phone.

Nothing against it, but I haven't heard anyone say that the iPhone 7/7+ has the best display on a smartphone.

Also, I don't see keeping the home button just because it's iconic. The clickwheel was even more iconic. The headphone jack has been a staple of smartphones for a decade. Apple doesn't hesitate to move on as soon as something doesn't fit their vision anymore.

Nothing ever lives up to the hype. Regardless of what it is, who makes it, or what is hyped. It could come with technology that beams augmented reality directly into your eye and people would be like "There's a yellow tint. I was told it was the glue in my retina."

Modern technology has to move forward with affordable, reliable, parts. We can't get too crazy. AMOLED is possible, I still expect a home button but it could be removed. I expect dual camera to continue forward and possibly be put on the regular iPhone. Color options may change. Jet Black will probably go away again. It may even have a design that nods to the original iPhone. I expect it to be a new design but probably won't be rocking any super crazy tech that blows our minds.

Do they ever? Well, maybe the 6S because we keep hearing it is better than the iPhone 7.

There was no hype about iPhone 6S, everybody was saying it's just the same phone as the 6 and not worth upgrading. It's just in retrospect, people tend to think the phones were better when actually there was the same amount of complaints as there always is.

everything at this point is just a rumor. No one has any idea. Will they release a 7S or just jump straight to the 8? If it is a complete redesign I think it would be the iPhone 8. If I was apple I would still push a 7S and hold the redesign for 2018. They know they are going to sell million, and a 7S with a spec upgrade would do just fine.

I'm looking forward to a redesign and reduced bezels as much as the next guy, but I will laugh and laugh if they release this same design next year. There have been so many comments on MR telling people not to buy the 7 because the glorious almighty 8 is just around the corner.

The Next iPhone may not live up to the hype...

Thoughts?

If not, I'll utilize their 14 day return period.

Apple's customer service (though slipping) is still better than the competition.
Up until the last few years this was true.

But that was then and this is now. Google, Amazon, ANKER, Samsung, Motorola and others now offer excellent customer service. I know, I've experienced it.

Being able to bring your phone to a local Apple retail store to get it serviced is a definite plus for most.
We're living in the online internet age, only old seniors and some who require handholding need the emotional in person connection. Spending time and money driving to a store, only to have to wait for attention, is an old paradigm.

I get swift, courteous, effective solutions via online chat, email, or personal phone conversation routinely from the companies noted above.

It's as fast and easy as that.

Soooo, you've never seen the swathes of digitally knowledgable young people in the Apple stores then. How odd, have you ever been in one, or is it only the half dozen or so I've been in that happens with.

Some people and this might be hard to believe still like actual human interactions. More importantly if someone has a hardware issue it's nice to be able to walk into a store and walk out 10 minutes later with a replacement device. How long does it take to get a replacement device over the Internet these days. Well, last I had to do it with my wife's Apple Watch a few weeks ago it took about 15 hours from m chatting online to a replacement arriving next day.

Still not quite as quick as a ten minute stop off. Not to mention things like when I was in a few months ago buying something and just happened to offhandedly mention that my mute switch was a little loose. Still perfectly functional, just a little loose. Despite being months out of warranty and no AppleCare, the guy in the shop asked to see it. Shrugged and said, I'll get you a new one. Yup actual shops are an archaic waste of time.

Oh and incidentally, not that it matters, but I'm a developer and an ex semiconductor engineer, hardly in need of hand holding when it comes to technology. Nor have I yet to reach the glorious heights of being an oap. I also hate shopping.... Unless it's a techy shop where I can browse and try out things :D My apologies if your agoraphobic and have issues leaving your house to be among people, but your logic just doesn't hold water.

Oops must've hit a nerve...

The next iPhone and all future versions can't possibly live to this communities expectations. But that's what defines an enthusiast. You always want the next best thing and Apple doesn't really deliver that with hardware & features. They do it with design and software. With that said, they're still delivering the best user experience out there and that's probably why most of us are still here.

My only problem with the customer service selling point is that Apple seems to be moving away from in store swaps. I'm hearing more and more that they're requiring thenohone be shipped out. While that's not necesssrily a deal breaker it is a far cry from me bringing a non working phone in and walking out with one that does work. Why even go to the store if this is where things are headed?

Fwiw this is how they have always worked with every product outside of iOS devices, afaik. iOS devices were always special and for special attention. But if taking my phone into the store still nets me having to wait for the service center to receive it and ship it back (to the store) then I may as well throw it in a box myself.

I honestly think it could.

Oled screen with drastically reduced bezels would just about cover all the needs/wants of people here. You might not even need to do much the the internals otherwise.

You are completely, 100% right. There could not be a larger mountain of evidence that everything the tech-blog-industry wants to project onto the next iPhone is not happening.

As indicated in the other thread, they're still providing white box replacements on the spot for iPhones. It's only that some stores are depleted of white box replacement stock, especially with 7 Plus.

They've stopped doing in-store swaps with the Apple Watch though, but that's old news.

Displaymate reviews displays for all phones. Apparently they are the authoritative on this topic.

i am actually referring to older devices. I had no idea about iPhone 7 replacements and this wasn't making my statements based in that. I've seen multiple accounts here and elsewhere of people stating their 6s or older had to be sent out. No in store replacement offered. Still, that's not the majority, which is why I say they seem to be moving away from this.

To be fair Apple has never promised in store swaps or repairs. Ever. It has always just been an unwritten rule. And a wonderful unwritten rule, indeed.

Apple swaps your phone in store. Why wait a week when you can have it same day?

Displaymate hasn't said iPhone 7/plus has the best display (perhaps I'm misunderstanding your meaning though).

The latest phone to hold that "overall best display ever" award is the note 7.

My experience with a defective 6s+ was an in store replacement but at first they told me they would need to send it off for repair. This irked me because I can't go a few days without my phone I use for work. Fortunately they replaced it on the spot.

I hope the in-store replacements are not going away for the iPhones.

I hope so too. Curious that they defaulted to sending it out in your experience too. In previous years I never heard this. Everyone was just reporting white box replacements.

I'm not sure this is a 100% the way they're moving and I tried to be clear about that. It could just be low stock (though that doesn't explain your experience much). There's always lots of speculation about these things. People were reluctant to believe Apple was doing on site screen repairs, at first, too. Curious to see if they'll do that moving forward with the waterproofing glues they use now.
