I don't buy that. They could have dressed a little better to show the process more respect. To me, it seemed like they didn't give a **** (but they showed up for a free trip to NY to hang with their teammates/buddies). Did they have to wear $5,000 suits? No. But they could have worn nice pant or jeans, a decent shirt, and nice shoes. Flip flops, shorts, and crappy t-shirts were the wrong choice. And if it was a PA directive, it was a stupid way to go.

If it was a tactic, then I guess they're just as out of touch with the fans/public as the owners are.

Regardless, I stand by the players in this. No matter how much they make, to expect them to agree to a 10-14% pay cut is ridiculous, especially when revenue has been up. To expect the players to take less than 50% is silly. If the owners meet them at 50%, I would be OK with that. But 43 or 47% when they were getting 57%? No. No way.

Yeah, I pretty much agree that the owners are asking for too much.

Normally, in these situations the players are being unreasonable, but I have to back the players on this one. The players are the game and the owners are trying to take advantage of them.

Now, does everyone make a lot of money? Sure. But hockey players are low on the totem pole as far as all pro sports are concerned. And no one in any profession should have to agree to a 10% pay cut, especially when hockey has seen revenues increase.

I've had the privilege to get to meet and play with several NHL players. Not one of them has given me the impression that they seem entitled to anything. I'm in Chicago, so I guess the opportunity to play with these guys happens here more.

Quite honestly, when I have trained or skated with NHL guys, they are really low key-super nice and helpful. That doesn't mean they take it easy on us goalies with slapshots though. :)

But when I think of other sports, I don't see pros coming down to play with amateurs like in hockey. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

Hockey players are the best, nicest people in sports I know. They deserve at least half the revenue.

A lockout should most certainly help the LA Kings, after seeing how awful the Bruins were to start the last season after their Stanley Cup hangover. Hopefully LA lets that hangover die in the lockout. :p

Not only at the beginning of the year, but both Boston and Vancouver hit the wall in early April and got knocked out in the first round. I didn't watch that Vancouver series, but you could just tell by watching the Bruins were gassed. A shortened season would definitely help LA's chances for a repeat. It's nearly impossible with the shortened offseason in a non-lockout year.

Another good point - should be more rested on the other end, most likely (not certain seeing as the schedule could be condensed and still tough). Vancouver was pretty listless last playoffs.

He shouldn't make a damn cent until this thing is resolved.

Well, I don't know about that. Like him or not, he is still working on behalf of the league and the owners, and should be compensated for his work.

However, it would be a good/fair gesture for him to take a pay cut along with everyone else until this is resolved.

I think he makes $8 million/year......

The players aren't getting paid during the lockout. The owners aren't making any revenue. Why should he make any? No salary would maybe give him motivation to stop dicking around and actually start some serious negotiations.

Right- every day he does nothing the league loses money.

I understand what you're saying, I really do. But, that's just not how it works.

Donald Fehr is still collecting his salary from the NHLPA- is that okay?

The players might be locked out, but the executives, coaches, management, etc. aren't. They're all still being paid.

I haven't talked to anybody that would know anything but I tend to agree with that.

I may have said this before - sorry.

No serious negotiations will take place until one side or the other fractures their unity and wants back to the table. The players are more likely to do that simply because there are more of them and there are plenty that are young, financially insolvent, and/or at the end of their careers and won't be able to stand the pressure.

As fans we can:
- give up our season tickets - I don't see many people in top markets doing that (I'm not)
- Stop supporting the NHL in the meantime - ditch NHL Network, don't buy NHL gear
- Stop supporting the owners - many own the arenas, don't shop, eat, drink, or go there...

Short of that - I don't see much else that can be done.

There is some small chance that by the time the national TV coverage starts (day after Thanksgiving) one side will have had enough. But, the players seem unified right now and the owner are pigheaded.

"It's very complicated and way too much for the average Joe to understand, but having said that, I will tell you this: The owners can basically be viewed as the Ranch, and the players, and me included, are the cattle. The owners own the Ranch and allow the players to eat there. That's the way its always been and that the way it will be forever. And the owners simply aren't going to let a union push them around. It's not going to happen."

These people are so ****ing ignorant it's not funny. Obviously we're all big hockey fans in this thread, but this is just getting ridiculous. **** everyone involved in this whole thing. So many people will be out of jobs or losing lots of money that they can't afford to lose once they actually start canceling games. All of the arena workers, people who work in the parking lots, bartenders and servers in the bars near the arenas, people who work on the production teams for the TV and radio broadcasts, etc. Not to plunge this thread in to a politics discussion, but our economy is obviously not in great shape right now, and losing 41 home games over the next 6 months is going to hurt these people big time.

**** the owners and the players. They are so unbelievably ignorant to the real world people who are affected by this ********. The fans need to stand up and not put up with this **** anymore. I hope this league never recovers. Jeremy Jacobs can drop dead for all I care. He's a worthless human being.

There is no way they play a single NHL game this season.

Decided to ask Siri a question:

With Donald Fehr--who headed the MLB Players Association when the 1994 labor strife essentially erased the 1994 baseball season after August 11, 1994--is now heading the NHL Players Association, we may be talking a season-long lockout like 2004-2005. This is the type of thing that could result the contraction of the NHL from 30 to 24 teams or even less for the NHL to be financially viable again.

While expected, I don't understand the knee jerk reactions from Jimmy D's comments. He is a Hall of Fame player and probable Hall of Fame executive. Not one word of what he said was incorrect. You may not like the blunt honesty of it all, but it's all true.

And stated just a few times, the most revealing thing in that interview was the most public statement confirming the league promotes collusion when it comes to handling RFAs and poaching players.

Nothing is going to happen to Cleary, either. Just like nothing is going to move in these negotiations any time soon.

Hooray prolonged lockout!

show of hands who would rather have our problem than the NFL's right now..

I feel bad for NFL fans-at least they didn't have a championship game "tainted" by a questionable call.
