So tomorrow we find out how far apart everyone is...
I am hoping that the player's offer is not just like the owner's offer-a pipe dream.

It has to be. If it isn't, then they will be negotiating from a weak starting point. And Fehr plays hardball.

well I guess he took the middle ground-play hardball by forcing the owners to come out and say a pay cut is not enough, then the players gain the upper hand.

side question-practically, how does revenue sharing differ from a luxury tax? granted, a revenue sharing would get smaller teams more cash, but to me larger revenue sharing to lower teams just seems like a gateway to a luxury tax. Whether or not we should go that route is a different question and I say no mainly because baseball has one had there is still a competitive balance problem.

Luxury tax means there's no hard cap and teams can spend over, which is currently not a function of the NHL's CBA and salary cap. The funds are pretty much then distributed to either those under the cap or low revenue teams (not really sure, don't follow the NBA that much to know how they do it).

I am definitely not a proponent of a luxury tax -- it allows the rich to get richer. Now there's exemptions to "money not winning championships", but few don't know how much the Dallas Mavericks were over the salary cap when they won the NBA Finals. It's bogus a team can spend far beyond a salary cap and still win.

It would be much easier to implement than a real solid revenue sharing system, but luckily the NHLPA doesn't seem to want to go that way.

If I understand it all right the revenue-sharing and luxury taxes are different things entirely though possibly linked as stated above.

From what I understand there is:
-- Hockey related revenue (HRR) - this where the owners want to redefine what 100% means and the players are currently getting 57% of the current 100%. We would see 100% as everything that comes in through TV, merch, etc. but the owners might say that some of that they put up the money for and is risky/etc. Who knows...

-- Revenue sharing - this is where the richer teams split $ with the poorer teams. Personally I think this is good but there is no mandate that the "poor" teams run good businesses and therefore could be broke for the wrong reasons

-- Caps, luxury taxes, cap-swapping, etc. This was one of the main points of the owner's proposal that was simply avoided in the NHLPA rebuttal.

-- Contract lengths, UFA, RFA, etc. -- these were also brought up in the owner's proposal and left out of the NHLPA's

-- There are a ton of other points to this as well. After I initially read the NHLPA's response I thought -- well, they are trying to be reasonable which I still think I standby. It doesn't matter though because the owners have a bug up their butts about something and I maintain that the season is not going to start on time. Someone has to give in first.

And, I heard in an interview today that teams like Columbus don't make any money during October-December anyway until college and pro football is over so starting late won't really matter to them. Also, the ticket buying fans keep coming, TV ratings weren't dramatically affected post-2004, and NBCs deal just carries over a year if this year isn't played. So, there's not a lot of incentive to play...

I supposed I won't get interest on my $8,600 that the Bruins have

Umm..just got the news. I've been named starting goalie for my team for the fall/winter season.

Holy crap, I'm so happy right now. All I can say is that I hope I live up to it. OMG, I'm kind of floored...hell yeah!

Wow- I have no words. I just..****ing wow.

I beat our starting goalie 4-2 at fall tryouts. I was not sure what that meant as we are breaking into two different teams. But now I know. :) I am the starting goalie on the new team. We had two other goalies try out too.

so i have been in israel for the past ten days, and with the current state of our game i wanted to post a couple of hockey related photos i found while bumming around the country that may make some people laugh.

a bit of background-in case you dont know what it is here is an explaination of what a "kippah is"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kippah

in many different places around the county, you can find shirts of various american sports teams with their names in Hebrew(I imagine you can find the same type of thing in other countries).

While I did not see every single team, I am pretty sure that I saw at least a dozen or so different teams on shirts, hats, and kippahs.

I even found a sharks kippah(will post pics later).

Surely-I would have got the shirt or kippah for you but i didnt know your size or even where you live so I figured a pic would do best.

enjoy all!

Definitely the thought that counts!

My cousin wore a Leafs kippah that he got in Israel for a few years when he was in his late teens (he was the religious one of the fam, and wore one all the time). I'm very very not religious (very), but I still wear one out of respect when I go to a family member's house for a Shabbot dinner or a high holiday.

My mother went on a trip there back in the 90's, and she brought me back a few of those hebrew sports teams shirts....a Leafs, a Raptors, and a Blue Jays (duh).

Did you make it up to the Canada Centre for a skate? Back when I was in high school, a couple of my friends went there for 1-2 months to teach hockey.

Cool beans, good off-season post.

I went to a cousin's Bar Mitzvah in Chicago a few months ago, and his theme was Chicago Blackhawks, so naturally, I was trying to find a Blues kippah but couldn't find one anywhere online. I guess I'd have to make the pilgrimage to Israel to get one for his brother's Bar Mitzvah in a couple years, and that's not happening :p

I bet there are places that you can get them online-plus i am certain there are places that do custom kippahs-all they need is the logo

For as many times as I have been there(my dad was born and raised there so i have an entire extended family there), that is one thing I have not done and desperately want to go there, if only to say I ice skated in Israel.

Am I the only one who truly believes we will have hockey for the very same reasons we don't have a CBA now?

If we loose a substantial part of the season (more than 30 Games), every sponsor will go and that 10 year deal with NBC will be burned and given to the MLS (Major League Soccer, not Maple Leaf Sports). I stand by my theory that we are playing by Thanksgiving at the latest-anything beyond and the season may not be salvageable

well if there's one good thing to come out of the chance of there being a lockout, it's the fact that Pete Chiarelli is working like crazy to get contract extensions done before Saturday.

The Boston Bruins have signed forward Tyler Seguin to a six-year contract extension worth an average of $5.75 million a year, the Bruins announced Tuesday morning. The deal starts after this season and runs through 2018-19.

Seguin, 20, who was drafted second overall by Boston in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, was set to become a free agent after the upcoming season.

Seguin, who collected just 11 goals and 22 points in 74 games during his rookie season, had a breakout sophomore campaign in 2011-12. He led the team in goals with 29 and points with 67 and became the youngest player to hold the club's scoring title. Seguin was also selected to play in the 2012 NHL All-Star Game.

This deal is going to be a steal for Boston in 2-3 years. Next up for contract extension: Lucic.

So how is everyone going to get their fix once the season starts late? I got lucky-San Francisco just got an ECHL team (san francisco bulls) and I just learned I may be able to watch some games and I probably will be able to get some single games as well. That, combined with the NHL network should hold me for the month or so that it will take for logic to prevail.

Now if things stretch into turkey day, then we may all need to find alternative means of amusement.......

I've got the OHL Plymouth Whalers about 3 miles away, so I'll be set. Plus I can get back to actually following college hockey. I kind of stopped while away at college in a non-hockey town (for most of my time there - Chicago) and having the NHL, football, and college basketball to more than take up my time.

I have no doubts that this is going to be a long lockout. The earliest I can see things starting is just before the Winter Classic, and only because that is the only leverage that the NHLPA has over the league. However, that still may not be enough for the NHL to concede anything. It really doesn't look like either side wants to budge much at all, and that is a real problem.

Both sides don't really understand the full extent of the damage they are going to cause with this work stoppage.

I also think it's completely ridiculous that contracts are being negotiated between teams and players within a few days of a lockout and with no CBA in place.

We have our AHL Chicago Wolves. I'll just go to those games- lots of fun. Plus, our league season starts next month. I'll be busy doing and not worried about watching.

Ignorant millionaires fighting with even more ignorant billionaires over money. Neither of these groups will be hurt by a lockout. The ones who will be hurting are the support staff, arena workers, and workers in the bars, restaurants, stores, and parking lots near the arenas who depend on the traffic of game days to make a living.

I actually live a little bit closer to the Providence Bruins than I do the Boston Bruins, so I'll probably go down and catch a couple games there.

Still, this whole thing is ridiculous.

I also really wish that I could watch TSN.

This is one of those events (summit series included) I wish I could find a way to watch.

While I agree with you, the owners wanted the players to go from getting 57% of revenue to 43%, (now 47%). That's a huge drop. I don't blame the players at all. The players are the game and they certainly deserve to get at least half of the revenue.

I agree. Expecting the players to take less money and salary rollbacks when the NHL's revenue has gone up from 2 to 3.1 billion over the course of this CBA is crazy. If the owners don't like revenue sharing with teams that are losing money like Phoenix and Florida, then move the teams out of the south and back to Canada. I'm guessing Winnipeg was quite profitable last year? They shouldn't expect the players to take pay cuts because they were stupid enough to think that hockey would be popular in the middle of the desert.

Well, looks like Doan is sticking it out in the desert.....at least for the next four years. They even structured some bonuses into his contract to take into account his lack of pay over the lockout.

It's pretty cool to see a player play all of his career on the same team (obviously, anything can happen over the next 4-6 years, but it's likely he'll finish as a Yote).
