It strikes me that, two days after Nintendo's direct, there is still no dedicated thread about the Switch 2.

Well, here it is...

What are your first general impressions on specs (or lack thereof), features, size, screen, launch games, price hike, battery life?

I fear the price in the US may go up again. Surprised they did a HDR VRR display out the gate. Wonder how well the hardware can handle the Transformer model for upscaling.

I have the Nintendo Switch OLED which I bought last year but I barely use it, even though I filled a 1 TB SD card with games. I tend to play much more Steam games, and I already have much more than I will ever be able to handle.

Pre-ordered the Switch 2 Mario kart bundle here in the UK. Had to order it in person at Curry’s/PC world store as they were not doing any online orders. I love Nintendo first party games like Mario so will have a blast.Looking forward to the larger screen and new content.
Oh wow, they have it for preorder in the UK now? Pre-orders are delayed here in the US. For pretty understandable reasons…

im on the fence now. I really don't like the precedent of $80 games being set. Coupled with uncertainty over prices now with preorders being put on hold.. like everyone else: we'll see!

I got back into playing Switch late last year because I wanted to play Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Traded in my original launch version for an OLED. I’ve really enjoyed it and have been holding off on buying Mario Kart 8 because I figured a new Mario Kart game would be a launch/early title for Switch 2. That being said, I’ll get a Switch 2, but it likely won’t be until a much later date. I do like what I’ve seen so far though.

Not sure how much better this will make you feel, but to put things in perspective here's an image from a 1993 ToysRUs add. How about 69.99 for the Super Nintendo versions of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II? Looking at it that way and factoring in inflation makes 79.99 not seem too bad for Mario Kart World.

I think it is already expensive at $450. The original Switch launched at $300, and this is 50% more expensive.
Yeah but the Switch launched 8 years ago and this, seemingly, offers better hardware at a very different point in time.
Honestly the price is ok I’d say if they finally release the full spec sheet and DONT charge PS prices for its games.

Yes nearly all pre-order is sold out across the UK. It is a mixture of online orders or having to go into a store to order directly. Not sure how many pre-orders available from Nintendo will be available on the 8th/9th of April.

I might get one simply because it’s a souped-up switch with improved specs and support for better resolutions. I okay by myself so the new social features don’t really interest me.

May as well post this here too:

Switch 2 ‘MAY’ have a Mini LED screen!

I've got my Pre-Order in with Argos in the UK with launch day delivery confirmed which is good. I think it looks great and is a big step up on the Switch. I don't game on PC's or other consoles so Nintendo consoles are my only consoles, So I had to get it straight away. I've been playing Mario Kart 8 since 2014 as I was one of the few who actually had a Wii U!

Intrigued to see some of the free updates to Switch 1 games which improves performance, Particularly Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, which were both great games but let down massively by performance issues.

The price of games is a sour point however. I'm still a physical collector so £75 for Mario Kart World is very steep, But that just makes the bundle with the game and console a lot more reasonable. As for the console price itself, I predicted between £3-400 and as soon as I saw it supported 120FPS handheld I had a feeling it would be closer to the £400 mark which it is.

Roll on June, really looking forward to it.

$300 in 2017 is almost equivalent to $400 today thanks to the high inflation in recent years, so in terms of value it's only small increase (12%). The Switch 2 also sounds like a lot more capable of a device compared to the original Switch at its release. The SOC in the original Switch was outdated when it was released, which helped keep the price down, while the specs on the Switch 2 sound much more up to date for 2025.

All of my SNES game I bought used, but I remember paying $60 for some of my PS1 games back in the 90's. With my allowance I could afford about one game per year. Simpler times...

I used to get one SNES game for my birthday and one at Christmas. The rest of the year I would either borrow games from a friend, or rent them for a week at a time from the video store. Remembering going into the local store and looking at all the games to decide what I was going to rent for the week while my parents told me to hurry up and decide were definitely simpler times.

Ah yes, renting games was fun! My birthday is just a week after Christmas so getting two pricey gifts back to back was out of the question. Nowadays it’s my wife that complains about my birthday being too close to Christmas. 😅

Better than expected hardware to be honest. I did expect 4K support, but 120hz at 1440p is a nice addition. It can also pull a lot more energy than the Switch 1, so lets see how it goes visually.

I was kind of expecting an OLED display, and then again not, because Nintendo LOVES to milk its customers, and it bodes for an updated model in 2-3 years time. But the display appears to be quite nice, so we'll wait and see. Bigger screen is nice, not sure it was needed though, seeing that you are loosing some portability, and that was a huge strength of the Switch 1. Of course, bigger screen, means bigger casing, means bigger battery and space for active cooling. Battery time is not better though.

I find the camera and microphone things gimmicks, especially considering how Nintendo is implementing it. 4 fps 200p video feeds from your friends? Uhmm.. Yeah... I believe the interest will die out quite quickly.

The bigger chassis also means bigger Joy-cons, which I consider a HUGE upgrade! I hated playing with the tiny Joy-Cons and ALWAYS went for the Pro Controller. This was an even bigger issue when having to play Mario Kart with a horisontal Joy-Con, when we played four together. Ew. Not an issue for my kids of course, but I do expect them to enjoy bigger Joy-cons non the less.
Nintendo doesn't seem to have done enough to ensure we won't get stick drift though, but time will tell. We weren't hit too badly by it, fortunately.

I am a bit disappointed in payed upgrades for Switch 1 games, when it is essentially just unlocking higher FPS and resolution. New features, sure, but just ticking off a switch in their compiler, is just usual Nintendo milking.

In my opinion the console is too expensive, and the games way too expensive. I am not sure we will upgrade, unless I find myself swimming in money in the coming years.

My BIGGEST disappointment though, is the lack of a 3D Super Mario launch title! I was sure it would come, given Odyssey is 7,5 years old (!) and never received any post game content. I've played all the 3D Super Mario titles to death, and Odyssey is in my opinion the pinnacle of 3D platformer design, and I was really hoping to see where the next title would go. I am expecting some form of open world in the Mushroom Kingdom approach to it, and really look forward to it. Such a title could win me over in upgrading (That, and the next Zelda).

I wonder if they'll do a Switch 2 Lite to cover the lower cost tier. Or if they'll just discount the Switch 1.
Cook: "Why not both?"

Cook and I see room for both, and I am sure Nintendo does too.
