My BIGGEST disappointment though, is the lack of a 3D Super Mario launch title! I was sure it would come, given Odyssey is 7,5 years old (!) and never received any post game content. I've played all the 3D Super Mario titles to death, and Odyssey is in my opinion the pinnacle of 3D platformer design, and I was really hoping to see where the next title would go. I am expecting some form of open world in the Mushroom Kingdom approach to it, and really look forward to it. Such a title could win me over in upgrading (That, and the next Zelda).
I think it's coming. My guess is either at the end of the year for a big holiday sales push (both of the game and of switch 2 consoles), or coinciding with the second Mario Movie (April 2026).

Then we will probably get a new Zelda in 2027 when the Zelda movie comes out.

I think the price is fine, launch titles look great, peripherals look great, addition of voice chat is great, video chat is fine, game cube games are great... overall I'm a big fan of everything they announced. I am worried about the increase of the price of everything though. We plan on buying almost everything at launch, but if that price increases by 25%, we'll have to rethink a lot of that.

The only thing that I don't really get is the mouse functionality. We play switch riding in cars/planes/trains, or sitting on the couch. There is never really a table top in front of you while you're playing. I guess if you got really into metroid, it might be worth setting up a gaming table. I'm just not sure I understand what they have in mind for most of their users with that.

Of course it is coming, it is one of their biggest franchises, and Mario is their icon. :)

I don't think they plan on launching a Zelda alongside the movie. They didn't do that for Mario, so I think they consider it completely seperate.

Oh yeah, the mouse thing.. It feels so ridiculous. Typical Nintendo. Gimmick just for the gimmick, so they can do something unique, no matter how much sense it makes.

They did release Super Mario Wonder a few months after the movie premiered. I think you're right about an all new 3D Zelda game but they could perhaps release something like an Oracle of Seasons/Ages remake.

I'm looking forward to seeing what a new 3D Mario game will bring to the table. Odyssey was the best one they've made if you ask me (Super Mario World is still my favorite 2D Mario and probably my favorite overall).

Right. Does it really impact your opinion that much if that game comes out in June or in December?

We'll see. Zelda seems to be gaining a good deal of popularity. The first Mario movie was a bit unique and I don't think they knew what to expect, but I think moving forward they will likely try to capitalize on the popularity of the movies with games coming out at similar times. Maybe it won't be a main Zelda title, but one of the spin-offs like we've been getting lately.

It seems like the mouse thing is for Metroid and maybe other shooters (Fortnite?). I assume lots of PC gamers will really like it. It might be big for some esports titles too.

Not in the slightest, where did I give off that impression? I just really want a new 3D AAA Super Mario game, and the current one is 7 years old, so I really expected it to be part of the lineup as a system seller.

I guess I read this as more of a overall disappointment with the S2, rather than a short-term let down that we didn't get it with the launch announcement. Hopefully we will have it by the end of the year.

I can’t wait to get it. My original switch was stolen last year while I was in the middle of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. I wanted to get the OLED switch, but didn’t want to spend the money if a new switch was going to be released soon.
I was hoping for a $400 price point, but came in higher. I just hope it doesn’t get higher and that I can score one. I already have a gift card from Best Buy with the Switch name on it.

I am souring on this release a bit with delayed preorders. Especially since they have lots of inventory in US already, and they have probably baked in plenty of Margin with a $450 console and $80 flagship games.

Literally nothing I really care about at launch except MK World, and then Dk Bonanza a month later:

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S for the right price, but I already have Puyo 1 and 2 on Switch 1, and Fast Fusion looks alright price dependent as well.. but neither a 'system seller' by any means just hope a half decent racer.

I certainly will aspire towards an OLED Switch 2 which seems inevitable, and Nintendo has done a really poor job with communication and every time they reveal more details, it comes directly at the expense of the consumer.

The 'Switch 2 Editions' for $20 upcharge (and more if you dont have BoTW DLC for example) is sleazy as hell.

I thought the SW2:E upcharge was only 10.

No, maybe TOTK since was $70 and now $80.
But BOTW is $80, Kirby (with DLC and enhancements) $80, Jamboree (with DLC for camera + mouse and enhancements) $80. Pokemon ZA too far out to say, but reasonably assume $80.

I'm not sure how you can blame Nintendo. Their announcement event just happened to come a week before the announcement of the biggest tariff plan announcement ever (?) in the history of the world. They reacted to that by pushing back preorders, which seems fair. They are rightfully waiting to see what actually happens, as that tariff plan has already been paused. This situation seems volatile to say the least and despite having plenty of inventory here (I'm not sure if that's true or not), they have to plan beyond whatever they already have here.

As for the switch 2 editions, I think it makes sense. They are putting a lot of work into upgrading their most popular titles. Charging directly for those upgrades rather than baking those costs into other things seems like the most fair way to do that, imho.

Oh you mean buying the game if you don't already own it. Okay, yeah all the games are more expensive. Showing my age: I remember paying these prices for some Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 games.

Any way you cut it : $60 even if years ago, $20 current day = $80

I’m not sure there’s that much work put into them

Alternative methods have yielded excellent results just look at YouTube. They aren’t even giving people the BOTW dlc with the switch 2 edition that too will cost you extra

Agree to disagree :p

I think $10 would be fair ish , and $70 even though it sucks in line with Sony milking things

$80 is just leapfrogging beyond the competition. Add in left out DLC (only one example so far but perhaps others) it’s getting crazier than crazy

Also switch1 new releases have felt like they’ve been phoning it in for past year, either they have a reserve of games for holidays or they think this is a great 2025 roadmap

I’m surprised how anemic the launch is. I was expecting at least 2-3 new title bangers not just Mario kart

I don’t really feel like revisiting older titles I played a disgusting amount of BOTW at switch1 launch

The upgrade packs are 10 USD.

Interesting , thanks. their communication has been outright awful and confusing too.

still, $70 TOTK + $10 upgrade = 80.

$60 + $10 upgrade for BOTW... $70 for a base 2017 game... with DLC a la carte + $20 DLC = $90. Nice.
Yeah Nintendo games never going on sale is clearly a problem. I am a big fan of stalking Woot for cheaper Nintendo games.

EDIT: Tears of the Kingdom is 45 bucks on woot right now. New.

What are your first general impressions on specs (or lack thereof), features, size, screen, launch games, price hike, battery life?
My first impressions are quite good. I was expecting it to cost more than $500 USD so the suggested price of $450 USD is pretty nice. In point form my thoughts are thus:

  • GameChat
    • Probably not something I would personally use
    • I would have loved it as a child/teenager with friends all on the same console
    • May be the most outwardly social social feature of any console currently out right now
      • the Party Chat of the PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Series consoles don't lean into screen sharing or video chat and, tbh, I couldn't even tell you off the top of my head if they could do either of those things
  • Screen & Size
    • Probably much more comfortable than the first generation Switch
    • 120hz is potentially exciting, assuming the display is able to handle motion well
    • Not having the display be an OLED is clear to me as a sales tactic to sell an OLED model a year or two down the line - which I personally will wait for
  • Games
    • Mario Kart as a launch title is excellent
    • The upgrades to BOTW and TOTK will cause me to spend another 400 hours playing those games
    • That FromSoftware game looks interesting
      • I like how both Nightreign and this Duskbloods game are leaning way more into FromSoft's weird designs
    • New Donkey Kong game looks good
    • I'm looking forward to seeing what the new 3D Mario and Zelda titles will be
  • Battery life & Performance
    • Worse battery life than the OLED
      • One of the reasons I will wait to buy a Switch 2
    • Performance is still questionable
      • Apparently Nintendo will be leveraging DLSS
        • idk which NVIDIA Tegra or Tegra-like chips support whichever version(s) of DLSS
      • I don't doubt that the Switch 2 will be able to push 1080p at up to 120hz
      • I doubt the Switch 2 will be able to push 4K at up to 60hz without some kind of major compromise
        • Compromise either to visual fidelity or resolution
        • I am happy to be proven wrong
On a somewhat performance related note I question how effective the fan in the Switch 2 dock will be. I don't see any special vents in the backplate of the Switch 2. Does the dock contain some sort of hardware used to boost the performance of the chip and that is what is being kept cool? Plastic is not a good conductor of heat so I would expect whatever cooling the fan does on the Switch 2 itself to be minimal.

My dream Nintendo console, or Steam Deck successor, would leverage Thunderbolt and an external GPU to boost performance while docked. The Switch 2 dock looks like it could do something like this, but I have no confidence at all that Nintendo would be that cool.

Do we know how much the console tour game will be? Could it also be free for online users?

That would be a good concession in Nintendo world but I dunno if they'll do that.

if they pared back on $80+ games, I think the reception would be more favorable. Let's stay at $70. Even that is a lot considering they almost never go on sale or even years later.

$80+?

Literally the highest price is $79. DK Bananza will be $69. SF6 will be $59.

Considering TotK was $70 at launch, I don't think we're really dealing with an absurd increase in pricing here.

TotK was the only $70 title. $80+ yes, $60 BOTW + $10 switch 2 edition + $20 DLC = $90.

$80 games are near $90 after tax, which is a lot closer to $100 than $60 after tax was to $50. The prices are adding up BIG TIME imo

Haha. Yeah, if you count every DLC for every game ever, you get big numbers. Have you seen fortnite skins?? Truth be told, Nintendo hardly ever has paid DLC. And the switch 2 editions costing money is just a way for them to sell more online subscriptions.

And counting tax as some sort of add on? as if other games don't have tax? What's the significance of even mentioning tax??

I guess to each their own.

Just that $65 (after tax amount, out of pocket) for example is closer to $50 than upper $80's ($80+tax) is to $100. We're on a new psychological threshold. Some of us at least :p
